Fellows who are watching this, I gotta say this might be the only channel you will need to get reviews of camera&lens. Because they are so informative and neutral, and everything he said is true. and with RAW images that help me to check by myself.
Just keep up the work Jared.

Hi Jared, I bought the Tamron 100-400 for my Nikon D7500 and tested it at the zoo over the weekend. And I was very pleasantly surprised. The autofocus was almost always on and the pictures were sharp and rich in contrast. I actually wanted to wait for a comparison with the Sigma 100-400, but that is now unnecessary. And my own comparison with the cheaper Sigma 18-300 showed me that the Tamron is just great. And in low light situations helps me the good ISO behavior of the Nikon.
    Greetings from Germany

Been very pleased with me recent Tamron lenses : 70-200 G2, 24-70 G2, & now this 100-400mm. The 70-200 G2 is my work horse for both outside nighttime & indoor sports. Was looking for something with more reach for daytime rugby, softball, baseball, & occasional bird shots. Borrowed & used the Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 and it's excellent however was wanting something lighter without need to use a monopod while on sidelines all day. That Nikkor is very good for what it can do & at its current price.
Been very happy with this 100-400mm however found, like with some other lenses, it's best to TURN OFF the VC/VR when shooting at higher shutter speeds over 1/500. Not needed at these higher speeds plus images look slightly better - looks like VC/VR introduce slight "blur" in some shots even when focus is locked on subject. With it turned off never see any problems.
Lens is light enough to be left hanging on end of camera without worry that it'll be too much strain on mount unlike the 70-200. Would have liked to see the tripod collar included since I like using it as a palm rest but no plans on buying collar because of price.
For the price, lightness, & good quality images this lens is hard to beat.
And btw with VC on, at 400mm, can handhold at 1/15 & get consistently sharp photos which is amazing. Can go lower but my hit rate drops.

I use this lens on my 7dmkii and it provides excellent sharpness , contrast and colour rendition in a relatively compact package .
I can also vouch for its weather sealing . Major flooding found me stranded on the roof of my house for several hours in torrential rain with my camera bag. Several of my "weather sealed" lenses did not survive the experience . The tamron is still going strong.

I bought this lens 2 days ago. Already had some sample shots with this lens. It's pretty amazing. Got it at the same price as you mentioned. It really is much more effective on a crop sensor, feels so smooth and images are real crisp man!
    Love from India.🤎

I grabbed one of these used this summer ('24) from B &H, about $670. w/tax for the best one they had. First thing I did with it after slapping it on my D7200, was to take a picture of the stop sign in the corner about 50' away. I was stunned by the amount of reflector detail captured. Fine detail you'd never see just walking by. So, the auto focus was smack on, no front or back focusing whatsoever, and tack sharp @400 mm.! I was prepped for focusing issues after the ordeal I had with my Sigma 70-200 mm f2.8 Sport, (+18 adjustment). It never happened, just click it on and go play. The Philly zoo has screwed up access to the cheetah exhibit to the point where a 70-200 f2.8 (my favorite zoo lens), won't get you close enough, even on a crop sensor camera. One of these bright sunny days I'll head over there and see if this 100 to 400 will do the trick.

I bought the lens, my first test was good. I went to Lake Superior and shot northern lights high up on a cliff. It worked well in sub-zero weather and the images were sharp. After the sunrise I was photographing ice houses and a Bald Eagle flew by people ice fishing and ice houses. It was tack sharp and it didn't lose focus once, which really surprised me. I do freelance photojournalism so the size and build are perfect for me. I was shooting on a Canon 1DX Mark II.

Rocco Melchionne I have been shooting w/this lens for several months on an 80D. Great glass at a reasonable price for anything outdoors, w/saturated colors & sharpness at each end of the mm's.
I did buy the tripod mount/foot ($129 and expensive) and do recommend using it..
View the in-depth 3-part review by Dustin Abbott, a must see..
I use the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 (2nd generation A009, before the G2 A025) less and less in addition to the Sigma 150-500mm, while OK, is no match for the Tammy 100-400mm..
I will keep the 70-200mm f/2.8 and sell the Sigma..
I also have the Tammy 18-400mm specifically for the 80D APS-C.
A nice walk-around lens that will surprise you w/it's versatility..

Phillip Farano that's wonderful man! I follow Dustin Abbott. His multi-part reviews are quite in-depth and informative. I'm sure the tripod collar is useful albeit pricey at that amount. Yep, if do the same with the Sigma if I were in your place.

Been using this lens for a few months. Football, rugby, baseball, & some wildlife. Works great outdoors during daylight & a very well lit football field. Tried using it at other football fields with average to poor lighting and it doesn't do as well. It will still autofocus nearly as fast however ISO is well over 20k & it shows in images. Normally use a f2.8 or f4 for football - at f6.3 and keeping shutter speed high enough to freeze action the images aren't great. Get cleaner images of football by cropping in on shots taken with f2.8 200mm using D850. However all other sports during the daylight - for the money this lens costs - it produces very good images compared to some very expensive glass. Not saying this Tamron is as good as f2.8 300mm or bigger lenses Nikon has but for the money it is worth every penny if you don't have 2+ thousand dollars in change.
One thing I have noticed - TURN OFF VC if using higher shutter speeds for better images. Do your own testing but I've found that if shooting about 1/400 and higher images are sharper with VC off. VC works great on this lens and can hand hold at very slow shutter speeds. But it seems the VC introduces "shake" at fast shutter speeds. If you have this lens test it for yourself to check

I tested out the 100-400 for a few weeks and it was surprisingly very sharp and handled nicely! But it's just not long enough. It wasn't worth the trade-off in size and weight compared to a 70-200; I can crop from 200 to 400 with a high-megapixel camera just fine. Meanwhile, 600 is a different universe, and the collar is built-in for the 150-600 lenses by Tamron and Sigma, so I'm aiming more towards those.

Wish the sigma came with a tripod collar too..but mostly that's manageable and thanks to Sigma, Tamron decided to make one too! And other viewers, the Sigma gets much better once you update it's firmware and customise it.

Thanks Jared. I bought this one. Appreciate the review. Next, I want to go to a few air shows in California. This will be my first time to shoot an air show. I have a Canon 7D Mark II and I can use either the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 or the Tamron 100-400 f/4.5-6.3. I like the additional reach of the 100-400. Will it keep up with focus tracking? Should I select a single focus point or a cluster? I'm thinking a cluster since I'm shooting planes against a sky background. Also, since the planes will be coming from different directions, I'm thinking of hand holding. I will be practicing bird tracking leading up to the air show events to perfect my panning skills. Lastly, I know this YT is 9 months old, I'm wondering if you are still getting these comments, or responding. SETTINGS - AI Servo, Continuous Shooting, Shutter priority for jets (1/2500 sec), Aperture priority for prop planes (1/60 sec).

And since the zoo video, I've been dying to go to our local zoo with that lens, but the weather has been just total garbage (it snowed yesterday and is still snowing as I type this). AND-and, I love the store set. Looks great!

The next SpaceX mission is Monday, the TESS mission, however the next one I'll be at is Bangabandhu-1 in early May which will be launching the new version of the Falcon 9 rocket. If you're looking for a launch, I'd look into CRS-15 in June. SpaceX launches are notoriously difficult to get accredited for but for the CRS missions NASA runs the accreditation and you'd have no problem getting in to one of those I'd imagine. We had a guy accredited through KelbyOne at the last two. Sometime in May, look out on this media site (www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/launch/index.html) for the post that says "NASA invites media to upcoming Space Station Launch" pertaining to CRS-15 and apply to be media, not NASA Social, from there.

I think for the money, this is a good option. I've read a lot of reviews that say that and I had one, sold it (because I never used it--this was years ago) and am now missing the lens (to a point, where I might pick up another one). The only downside I did read about is that in the corners (above 300mm especially) they aren't all that sharp, but if people can get around that or don't mind that, then this is a very good lens for the price. And for those who were wondering about the Sigma vs. Tamron, according to my research, they're close--the Sigma is perhaps more evenly sharp across the frame, but the Tamron is sharper in the center, but softer in the corners. AF is supposedly a bit snappier on the Tamron too from my reading of various reviews and samples (example videos).

Great lens! I've had it for gosh...5 or so years now! I leave it on my camera at all times. If I need to switch to a prime, etc. no problem. But for wildlife and bird shots...it's GREAT! Definitely have to dial it in and it's not the best in bad lighting or indoors but hey...it's easy to switch lenses for that stuff!

I bought that lens two months ago and is a great lens for my Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II, using one shot AF, but when I used ai servo AF it was good for storks in the day but it was not really reactive in a soccer match in a sunny day in full focus (1,50 m to infinite), the first part I was working with that lens, the second part of the match (cloudy) I used the old Sigma 120-400 OS and it worked better, even if optically is worst, in short distances focused very well. I did no used the limit focus on the Tamron, maybe in that circumstances it works better, I didn't make any adjust via "tap in console" and I don't know if I can get better results. What I know about Ai-servo focus is that it works better in standard mode than fast one.
In a hall of an small city, it was hard to focus well in Ai Servo (too slow) for rolling skate, the Sigma won that match. So the difference between f5.6 and f6.3 is bigger than you can spect (even using a 5d Mk IV).
    Check results here www.flickr.com/photos/xaviplateria/albums/72157694204723474
In my flickr page you may see some other tests of that lens.

why not get 18-135 on canon and 18-140mm on nikon instead of the 18-400? because if you get the 100-400 in both mounts along with the 18-400, then that will get rid of the need for the 100-400 as it will already be covered by the 18-400.

ZN I currently own the Tamron 18-200 for my Nikon D5500 which I intend to purchase for my future Canon 80D. And the Nikon D750 is also on my shopping list.
Hence the 100-400 plus I can take it with me and use it on my crop body also.
Over the next four years I am collecting the cameras I want to use as well as the lenses I will be using. Its all part off a bigger plan.

Would have love to see how it does in portraits. I know some 200mm+ is usually unnecessary with shooting people but it just would have been nice to see some image samples of people.

I was thinking of getting the Tamron 100-400 or the Sigma 100-400 for my nikon d5300 so i got the Sigma 150-600 C, i love the extra reach for small birds.
Now i want the Tamron 70-200mm their first lens without VC, its cost 550€ and the other would be the sigma 70-200mm with OS but it costs 850€.
I really would love to get a version with VS/OS/VR but its costs too much, what would you say should i get the Tamron 70-200SP without VC or buckle up and get the sigma wit OS, the 300€ difference i would but aside to upgrade my cam from D5300 to D500.

  • @CanadianArchivist

This lens has its advantages for outside in many ways. Having a full frame F mount is great because I have a cropped sensor and if I change the body, this lens is more affordable. I shoot hockey indoors with a Nikkor 55-200mm 4-5.6G II ED. I also have a 50mm Nikkor 1.8G fixed prime and the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my camera. If I were to choose the Tamron, I’d likely get the 70-200 f:2.8 because two of my kids play hockey. I’d buy the lens when I change the body. Right now, I’m shooting indoors. The 55-200 is ok, but I would prefer a faster lens with the 2.8 aperture. In the arena I’m shooting at f:/4 at 3200 IS0 and a shutter speed of 400 sec. I do have to adjust the EV due to the reflection of the ice depending which arena. The ISO and shutter speed changes from each arena. The reason why my images improved was because of practice, and because of your channel discussing how to photograph hockey.

what is your view of this lens compared to the 18-400? With that extra ability to get wide angle, is the 18-400 a better bet for the money or is the quality better on the 100-400? I want something I can use at the sporting events for my kids/grandkids. What are your thoughts?

    • @pjf7943
      @pjf7943 6 лет назад

The 18-400mm and 100-400mm are used for different purposes (yes, I know they both take pics, LOL!), so it will depend on your what your needs/goals are for either of these lenses to serve you.. See Dustin Abbott's in-depth reviews for each of these lenses..
