It's a cheap lock and easily damaged. To "tension" the shackle, pull strongly and constantly as if you're constantly trying to open it. A "gate" is where a dial doesn't want to keep moving all the way around while under tension, but it get's "stuck" on a number (which some back & forward "play") but it wont keep turning past a point either side of a number unless you release tension. You find gates by tensioning the shackle and turning the wheel until it's in a "stuck" portion, and that's a gate. Try and use lots of tension when finding gates or testing gates. The first goal is to put all wheels in a gate (or as many wheels as you can). Once this is done, then you pick on the gate that's the tightest to turn under tension, and you move that to another gate. Don't tension the shackle when trying to move out of a gate as it wont turn, so release tension a bit, turn out of the gate (turn so you're just post the point where it wouldn't turn under tension) and apply tension again and keep turning until you reach the next gate.
