Its not how you do it... 7×7 equals 49 because there is 7 layers by 7 layers and you multiply it by 6 because there are stickers on every side. And you get 294. Simple
So I'm new to this, getting my first cube in today/tomorrow (Qui Yi Warrior W, just testing the waters and I heard it was a great budget cube) and are 3x3 shape mods solved in a sikilar way to a regular 3x3? They just look to different to me I wouldn't think that you use the same algorithms.

Yes. if you can solve a 3x3, you can do 3x3 shape mods in the exact same way. mods just sort of skew your perspective :)
