- In this video I will show you how to properly drain and fill your Honda CRV 5 speed automatic transmission. This is a VERY easy DIY service that is even easier than changing the oil. I recommend you do this procedure every 15-20k miles. Below are paid links for the required OEM Honda DW-1 fluid and the funnel I used. This service takes a little over 3 quarts to complete.

I’ve put 355,000 miles on my 98 4 cylinder 2.3 liter Honda Odyssey van. I change fluid (single drain and refill) every 15k miles. It’s still my daily driver!
36 lb-ft of torque on that drain plug FIY for those who may wonder. Nice job, sir!
Thank you
You don't need to move the car off it's jack stans? 😄
Yeah I figured it was something much less than the 70 ft lb of torque he put on there, holy crap. He's super lucky that bolt didn't shear off
I just put 28 pounds, too little .
Great vid! If I may add one thing..if your engine bay is dirty, sandy, etc. (which many are) you may want to clean up/off the general area as well as the black wire loom above the dip stick before removing the dip stick. See 43 second mark.. This will keep any debris from falling into the trans. as you maneuver your hand, dip stick, and the funnel into place.. Again, good job explaining!
what do you use to clean it
Actually refill 4 times to flush. I don't know where the 3 times came from but it's incorrectly stated all over the internet. The 05 CR-V owners manual actuals says for automatic transmissions "To thoroughly flush the transmission, the technician should drain and refill it with Honda ATF-Z1 (now using the upgraded Honda ATF-DW1), then drive the vehicle for a short distance. Do this three times. Then drain and refill the transmission a final time." Thanks for making this video, people truly appreciate it even though they don't all give you credit.
So wait, after changing it for 1st time, you have to drain it again for 3 times and then fill it again? What you do with those 12 quarts you threw away? Can you recycle?
@@leosainz6764 Yes. Recycle them. Yes
thank you so so much for showing that the level can be checked!!! i was always told it was a sealed system and couldnt be checked and they (oil change people) would just have to do a fluid exchange for $$$. im so happy i can check (and now change!!!) it myself now!! thank you!!!
You are a brave dude, wearing such a nice watch doing auto work.
It's tough. Has a sapphire display so unless I run across any diamonds I'm pretty safe. Lol
It is all fun and games until something gets caught up on it!
THANK YOU! Thank you for making a video that actually shows and explains things clearly. I wish all car maintenance/repair videos online were like this. Well done!
This was a wonderfully put together car maintenance video.
Not like a lot of diy videos this one actually works and explains all you need to know. . Will be checking on others he has
Thank you
Finally! I wondered on how to change the fluid. Does look simpler than the oil change. Great job!
Does the k24 have a tranny dip stick? I can't find it
Honda used to use ATF Z1, but upgraded to DW-1 fluid. Valvoline maxlife is compatible with the hondas that used to use ATF Z1, but is fully synthetic like the new DW-1 fluid
Enjoy your Diys mate
Very helpful.
Thanks from Australia
Appreciate your videos and explanation, will put into practice next change, top stuff!
Another thanks from Australia. Cheers Mate.
Thanks for all the little details in between, awesome video, thank you sir!
Awesome, straight forward. Probably the easiest transmission fluid service besides having a T-Tech machine.
That is literally was easier than I thought haha thank you so much!
Thanks great video
I’m going to change my transmission fluid
Thanks again,
Awesome video straight to the point
Simple and informative thank you sir! From Philippines..
Do you get more fluid out if on a flat surface?
Thank you my friend. Make it very easy for me to change the fluid in my 2003 CR-V. Saved me a bunch of money. Appreciate you. Take Care.
Glad it helped.
Great clip. They did a good job trying to hide it, but at least there is a dipstick to be had with this ehm... "SEALED" transmission. Whenever I look for a car now, I'm always looking for those dipsticks. I don't want to be anywhere within 10 light years of any without them.
Short and to the point thanks for the video!
I've got a DNX696S in my 02 CRV too! Great headunit
Thanks this helped...especially the hiccups...made it real!
Great video and the change intervals for transmission is every 30K.
Thank you ! I am hoping this will help me with my little 99.
Hey what emblem is that that you have on your steering wheel? It looks so good I would love to replace my faded emblem with one!
Thanks, great job. Where is the fuel filter located on this Honda vehicle?
Thanks for the video. Wanted to add that, believe it or not, the Honda dealer sells the fluid for less than on-line. If you can stop and pick it up. Have found the same for power steering fluid.
Thank you. I just bought a 2006 Honda Crv.
Thank you, very good and well detailed video
Thanks man you really saved me here!!!
Thank you for sharing; but for HOW LONG I SHOULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE to DO THE NEXT CHANGE ? WHAT IS “ a little bit”?
Great video thank you! I've had my crv since 2005 .. it has 175,000 miles now running with the factory tranny fluid.. it's due for at least three changes lol still shifts smoothly but I've always kept her under 3,000 rpm while driving.. now I can change it myself thanks again!
Do you replaced it already?.
@@renzrenz3465 yes it was easy! I have to thank this video
Did you change it 3xs like recommended? 😂😂😂
Glad you made out ok. That's a lot of miles before changing. Honda's good cars
Thank you for this content!
Thank you for the video! That really help.
Good video. Saved me tons of money 💰
Thank you, with your help I was able to change the fluid for the first time ever. Thank you!!!
OK so I parked and checked the lvl. The issue is it showed a large amount of fluid then when I went to dip it after cleaning it showed no level. I know the manual says 30-60 seconds, is this the case and if so should I warm up the car more? Went around the block only and it was cold
Have the exact same car. Thanks for this! Oh and sweet watch BTW.
I was focused on the watch, saying please do not get any transmission fluid on that nice watch!
Hello everyone,
I’ve hit my first delima!
My daughter has a 2005 Honda CRV EX AWD that I am trying to complete a drain and fill on her transmission, and did a drain and almost exactly 3.3 quarts came out (I did measure so confident on amount). Dumped in exactly 3.3 quarts of DW1 back into the transmission. These numbers seem to be what I should have expected from my research on the make/model/year. started car and ran the trans thru all the gears to distribute fluid and let it warm to operating temperature. turned the car OFF and pulled the dipstick, wiped and checked the level…the fluid is not even touching the bottom of the dipstick :(. I will add that this car has zero leaks of any kind….it’s been a great car and has no shifting issues at this time. Here’s the funny thing….I can go out after it sits all night and check it cold and it is exactly even with the top of the XXXX marks on the dipstick. So everybody I talk to is saying car must be at operating temperature then shut car off and check level on level ground within 60 seconds and no more than 90 seconds, and when I do this the dipstick is completely dry but shows perfect after sitting all night and cold. Sooooo, do I need to add until full when it’s warm (which would be putting in much more than the recommended 3.3 quarts) or are late models different and need to be checked cold? It seems if I add more fluid when warm, that the level would be way over max when cold. I know Hondas are picky on fluid levels and don’t want to hurt her car.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give to explain what I’m doing wrong!
I know it's a while now. I'm like you. Doing exactly what you did. Like anything else. If it was driving well before the change? What ever you collected from the drain? If the new clean oil capacity goes in? It should be right ( maybe 50ml extra would not hurt) I had to learn to stop second guessing myself. .. enough of ocd🤣🤣
I'm late to the game here but... You should drive it around making sure it shifts through all the gears, even reverse, until the car is up to operating temp. Driving ensures the temp gets up there. Then shut it off and check w/in 60 seconds. Add 1/8 to 1/4 qt at a time and repeat process until full. If you added too much, you could pull some out the dipstick hole using a vacuum pump if you did not want to open the drain plug. Also, I like to check 3 dipstick readings, even looking at the backside to ensure the level is read correctly.
Hallo.
Hi good day sir I have a Honda CR-V same as in the video my problem is when I reverse on an inclined or a small hill I getting a grinding noise but on in the reverse I getting that problem any suggestions that may have that may cause this problem
Thank you. They said I need a new trans plug. I got this
What type of transmission is used in this model? Cvt or old torq converter?
Nice video bro much love. Ima try this
Great video, thank you so much x
In case many don't read my comments.
ATG & I recommend to replace transmission filter after 2 drains.
Great video! Would you recommend to do it with a 2003 Honda CRV AWD LX with 225,000 km? I have no maintenance records and I don't know if it has been changed before. The transmission has no issues. Thanks
Did you do it? How is your transmission running now?
very useful video! thanks a lot!
Nice, clear tutorial, thank you.
Great video, thank you!
And side question: how do you keep your headlights so crystal clear? Did you buy replacements or polished the original headlights?
They were replaced with new lights.
I bought a headlight restorer kit from Napa it's three different wheels you put on your drill with a polish. It works phenomenal and I've done three cars with the kit. Crystal clear guys for real. 👊🏻
Great job 👍👍 Btw I am your new subscriber.
Thanks and welcome
What about manual transmission, is it the same?
is it the same for manual?
Thanks for this!
What about the inline filter?
thanks to this video I was able to find the freakin dip stick!! lol
Aisin DW1 is also a completely fine fluid to use. Same manufacturer of the fluid at $6 per quart.
Do these models have a second external fuel filter?
Nice video ,what I also found out is that you can get much more oil out if you take one of the transmission cooler line that run to the radiator and pull one out or both and I used some compressor air and in one of the lines and the air pushed out lots and lots of transmission oil out like 3+qrt.and you can also blow out the cooler lines also in the radiator just be gentle on the air don't just blast... slow with a little pressure ...
Honda in owners manual does not recommend pressure fluid change because it could damage transmission. Do the drain and fill operation 3-4 times in a week or two with some driving if your transmission oil was not changed over 100k miles or so. After 3 times you should get around 90% new fluid in transmission.
No one do this. Ever. The trans is like 7 quarts. A drain and fill is 3.25. You remove over 40% doing it how Honda recommends. Drain and fill. Drive it for a few hundred miles and do it again if it is nasty. If not, just do at the suggested intervals.
Thank you very much.
How's about the filter that's near the radiator? Should it be wise to change?
25430-PLR-003 - yes.
Thank you!
Where should the fluid be on the dipstick exactly?
So 3.25 quarts is just less than. Half the oil, if you change it one it’s roughly 50/50. Old to new oil. If you change it again it would be 25 to 75 old to new. And again would leave it 12 to 88 old to new oil, I think that’s why they recommend replacing it 3 times
Good video out there. can i use WD40 first before pulling the transmission oil inside?
No
Thank you.
Great video thanks
There is nonfilter to change?
Thanks for the info!! If my car has never had this fluid changed in the past 3 years could changing it now cause any issues? (Sorry if this is a dumb question I assume it’s better to change it no matter what)
Always better to change the fluid on a Honda
what size ratchet do i need to remove the drain plug?
Came across your chanel. So I've bought 2005 crv question. To check automatic transmission fluid the vehicle should turned off?
Thank in advance 😊
Merry Christmas and Blessing New year!
Yes. Warm it up to normal operating temp and then turn it off and check the level
So it takes 3 gallons to drain and refill four times?
How much is that costing?
I changed my oil but when I check the dipstick the marking Is barely touched. from my understanding when you shit down the car (after it's warm) you have 30-60 seconds to check the correct level. I added 3.30 qts aprox.
Would this be the reason why my 2006 CRV vibrates when sitting idle in drive, or reverse? I've been told engine mounts and/or a ATF and differential fluid change will help out. Any ideas? I've been worried sick as I just got the vehicle.
That sounds more like bad engine mounts.
why not use other fluids? I had a jiffy lube replace my fluids when getting an oil change on their request...what problems could be cause by using a generic fluid or what they used?
Depends on where it was used and what fluid. Likely cause premature component failure of the rear end and transmission or at the minimum slipping and wear.
Hi, it seems the honda atf is currently unavailable, any suggestions what I should use instead?
Here you go. I also updated the link in the description. amzn.to/34Pi8F7
My 05 crv have 148k on it and the trans is slipping a little I have no idea of the service history pre 119k as I bought it used. Should I try to change the fluid or?
I would. Honda transmissions used in these year CRVs need clean fluid to work properly. You will not cause more damage by changing the fluid with this type of transmission. Only use the specified Honda fluid.
Thanks
Hey man I have Honda CR-V 2004 I heard a beeping when you started it, it does mine as well.. am so concern something is wrong. Is the beeping noise normal when u started it?
Yes it's normal
What radio deck do you have in there? Looks like it fits really nicely.
Came here for the tutorial and left wondering about the radio too. Pretty dope that it shows the Honda symbol at start up too
@@matthewvalentin9246 and the Honda emblem on the steering wheel!
How many litters do i need for manual transmission crv 2003? Sorry I'm Filipino we are using litter
could I use the same fluid for H-Rv 2006 automatic transmission?
Probably, Call Honda and ask Parts Dept, They'll Know
The video so bright and clear and very helpful even for a dummy like me , never lay hand on the engine and i can do it my self now ,because of the stupid Covid 19 , I don't want to go out to shop , Thank you so much and Happy New Year.
Lol the manual says the transmission dipstick is like right there up front 🤦♀️ thank you my dude
Hey, I have a crv 2006 , does it have an automatic transmission filter that need to be changed also? Or only cleaning the magnetic will be enough? Thank you
Supposed to be a "lifetime" filter
@@JackofAllMasterofNone thanks, so I wont change it , and what about the fuel filter at a 2006 crv cz I can't locate it ? Should I change it? And any idea about the mass air flow sensor location so I can clean it? Thanks in advance
Inline filter under radiator support, why would a maintenance video not change this with fluid change??
Hello, I agree with you change often and 3.25 quarts. What about the filter? I change it every 40,000 miles. Even the dealer does not do this. Would think it is necessary ? Thanks for the video & effort.
It's not necessary to change the filter, but it definitely won't hurt
How often should the in-line transmission filter be replaced? Thansk
According to Honda, never. Unless the transmission is replaced. But I would do every 100k miles.
TY...
How many times its recommended change the oil for a year?
I would do it every 3 or 4 oil changes and that will be more than enough.
How do I know if the car has 30,000 miles before the oil change or their about
If you don't know the history just change it.
What about atf filter?
just a noob question. Does this only apply for automatic transmissions and not manual transmissions?
Yes. This is for automatic transmissions
Dont you have to change your transmission filter also Every transmission fluid change?
No
Is that crv awd? I bought that dw1 but on the back it says not for use in awd. I have a 02 crv awd. Should I use that oil or something else?
Yes it is all wheel drive. The DW1 is for the transmission. The all wheel drive system uses "dual pump" fluid. The engine / transmission doesn't care whether it's all wheel drive or not. They are the same. The transmission on your 2wd also uses DW1
@@JackofAllMasterofNone thank you good sir
I have a 2006 fully loaded, in very good shape, but lately after driving at certain speed it feels like a vibration when shifting to 3rd gear. I hope is just a change of fluid needed but I´ve read it could be the transmission converter. Any coments that could help me? Thanks
Having the same issue with my 04’ , did you figure it out?
@@GavinDiDifferent No, I sold It as is. Seems like a comun issue no them.
What about the trans filter?
I have two questions, first how do you estimate the .25qt, is there and issue if you put a little too much in? Second question what radio do you have in your CR-V? Noticed it said Honda and everything when you started up. Thanks for the video!
Kenwood NAV unit. I just estimate the .25qt. as long as it's close it's fine
Leave the fourth bottle with about 710mL left since 946x0.75 = 709.5
You might look behind that flap you pulled down toward the radiator and see if there's a transmission filter hidden in there. Looks like a little inline bulb gas filter.
