It would be a mistake to take anything away from the 1986 Shaka Zulu drama series. It was and still remains classic and the epitome of storytelling. It should not be reprimanded just because it was done in a foreign language (English) and that it was produced by a White person. It was necessary then as its reflections were factual and resonating. It was made for an international audience something that was achieved with aplomb. The talent here was raw and untapped yet unbelievable. The actors were actually the moment. The narrator in the 1986 edition was God sent.
However, the retelling of the story of Shaka Zulu 1986 through Shaka Ilembe is also necessary and refreshing. That the new show will borrow notes from the past piece is only fair and a given, so that there is a different perspective for the new narrative. The new show will embark on deviating from the other one for originality and relevance. It should conjure a journey we never knew existed with the Shaka Zulu story. It should be the mouthpiece of the relic and new in synage. With a cast so huge and talented with so much acting experience the actors here should be able to tell a story second to none. Whether the new show will rival the old remains to be seen and it is already exerting some pressure on the performance of the actors. Yet the greatness of now should not be consciously made to undermine the greatness done in the past.
Both of them can core exist with the other one used as a reference point to sharpen the skill sets of the new kid on the block. Henry Cele played his part and played it so well in the 1986 edition and so now over to you Mr Lemogang Tsipa. Bomb production under Angus Gibson has already got one in the bag through Yizo Yizo.
