Primitive Technology: Woven bark fiber

  • Woven Bark Fibre
    I made a rough type of textile from bark fibre. This is the same tree I use for making cordage though I don’t know its name. It has been raining a lot here lately (the video also shows how well the hut stands up to rain) and this caused a large wattle tree to fall down taking a few smaller trees with it. One of the trees was the type I use for fibre. So I stripped the bark from it and divided it into thinner strips back at the hut.
    I spun the fibre strips into a rough yarn using a drop spindle. The drop spindle was basically the spindle and fly wheel I used in the pump drill video I made a while ago. A small stick was tied to the top of the drop spindle to act as a hook to make sure the fibres spun. I tied bark strips to the spindle and spun the spindle so it twisted the strip. When one strip ran out a new strip was added and twisted into the thread.
    I then made a loom by hammering stakes into the ground and lashing cross bars to it. Stakes were hammered into the ground to hold every first string while a moveable cross bar held every second string. When the bar was lifted a gap was formed where every second string was above every first string. Then when the bar was dropped a gap was formed where the opposite was true. So in this way the weaving thread could be drawn through over and under one way and then under over back the opposite way. The alternative was to weave by hand which would have taken longer.
    Collecting, stripping and drying the fibre took a few days to do. Spinning and weaving took just over a day per 70 cm square. The result was a rough material about as stiff as a welcome mat. So at this stage I’m using them as mats. In future I will investigate finer fibres, such as those from banana stalks, as a possible material for cloth. They take more processing but produce a finer product. I may also make a permanent, portable loom that can be taken indoors when it rains.

    In the 1940s, my grandmother, living in rural Canada, made linen cloth for sheets and towels. She would plant the flax (linen), let it grow, harvest it, soak it in pond water to rot everything except the fibers, beat and dry the fiber, spin it and then weave it into cloth. I still have two of her kitchen towels today. They are a treasure to me.

    You can also try pounding the fibre with a large, smooth rock prior to spinning. We do that with our stripped flax fibre in New Zealand when making traditional cloaks, and it makes the final product much softer/flexible.

    Incredible work. I was so excited when I saw the drop spindle! And the rigid loom construction is great. I see how the walking back and forth to set the shed between each pass must have been tiresome after a while. Shame you couldn't make a reed to push the weft down as one instead of having to batten using your fingers as that would also have sped things up -- just a piece of wood slightly longer than the total width pushed between the shed and pulled back toward the fabric would do the trick.
    Anyway, this was very cool to see. Did you read about looms and the type of construction possible in early technology, or backwards engineer a modern one and simplify it? If you are considering making a finer fabric which would require more time perhaps a warp-weighted loom which hangs vertically? These were common before automatic looms so maybe they are more convenient for hand use.

      @r steevens There's this thing called the sun that shines light that reflects off the planets.

    • @musicman8345
      @musicman8345 5 лет назад +5

      @r steevens Yea. That's outside of the solar system. The perspective is different when looking at one solar system from outside of it, as oppose to looking at planet in our own solar system. We can see the light reflect off Venus because were in the same solar system as Venus, orbiting around the same star. When you're looking at planets orbiting around a different star, then you can only see them by the shadow. Do you believe that Venus actually isn't a planet, but a star, and NASA is telling us it's a planet? Because if so, come on. Venus was discovered in before NASA even existed.

    • @musicman8345
      @musicman8345 5 лет назад +4

      @r steevens It's extremely far away. It looks like a star to us, because it's so far away, that we can't see any detail. Look at this picture. www.google.com/search?q=pic+of+earth+from+saturn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJjJ3IpLneAhUSSN8KHUYLCR4Q_AUIEygB&biw=2048&bih=1042#imgrc=pqztuSbt4VuNoM:
      The arrow is pointing to Earth. It looks like a star too, because the picture was taken so far away. I know Venus is closer to Earth, but still far enough away to seem so small.

      @r steevens They pulsate because of our turbulent atmosphere. I see you're one of those people. Who doesn't believe anything, and thinks everything they've been told is a lie, even though coming up with all these lies and fooling billions of people is a waste of time. And as far as I'm concerned, people like you just want to feel better and more intelligent then then everyone else, so you make yourself believe the opposite of everything you've been taught and then make yourself think you're right. So whatever. Think whatever you want. I respect your opinions, even if I don't agree with them. It's a free country. Think whatever you want. I just don't see the motive that NASA, or anyone, would have to lie about this stuff to this extent.

      Yes, but life sucked. I was talking to my great aunt last week. They lived in Texas, so many summer nights were unbearable. Bedtime was when the sun went down. She remembers first getting electricity and having a fan. Her mom had to milk 9 cows twice a day, once before sun up. Her mom would not allow her to learn how to milk because she did not want her to be a farmers wife. I helped an uncle repair a fence on his ranch. That was fun, ONCE.

    • @brujeriadiosa
      @brujeriadiosa 8 лет назад +17

      i was talking primitive, not a stressful dairy farm. i spent one summer in WV semi primitive with my uncle and family. i'm a city girl lol but i loved it. my older sisters didn't last two days. having to carry water and bathe in a galvanized tub, communally. they had a wool ram and he followed me around everywhere. we picked our food and killed game. i learned about eating plants and things. other side of the mountain were other kids and they had weed. too bad my sisters left before i found that out. can't work like this guy does if you're stoned on old style weed. the new stuff you get, the different strain you can work stoned all day with energy. good times
