This ending: He basically went on a vacation
Red Hood is not trying to ruin, or rebuild anything.
It is a reference to the comics, were after being shown what happened when he was born and leaving the Bureu he decided to go to Africa. The sad part is that the spirits of Africa told him to get away from Africa and ended up being caught by a mermaid, following the plan of a witch.
HellBoy's ending feels very realistic regarding his character. His concept (next to being a monster hunting badass) is a being who wants to be accepted for what he wants to be (a "normal" guy) and not what people assume he is (an evil demon). Using his abilities for the side of good is just a byproduct of the organization that raised him. He isn't just in it for being the hero, and he knows he doesn't have to be one to do the right thing.
He's just a guy looking for happiness in the places you wouldn't expect him to...with a large gun...killing things.
I just love it, he's a demon guy looking to be just normal and happy. And loves pancakes (and cats, but I hate animals so meh).

And the fact that (as far as comic book continuity goes) his life went to shit when he left for Africa

Hellboy was later arrested for the illegal hunting of elephants, after mistaking them for supernatural creatures and accidentally shooting them. During a lengthy trial, Hellboy was asked how he thought it would feel to have a part of himself forcefully removed. He responded by gesturing to his forehead, and proceeded to light a cigar in the courtroom.

This is before that. He went to africa, stuff happened, ended up in england, got killed by a dragon. Went to hell. It's actually really anti-climactic compared to what was going on over in BPRD with the literal end of the world happening.

The Elderly Knight Whose Name Is Unknown. Mike Mignola is the creator of Hellboy. He also Reid the artwork for Hellboy's ending.

I don't think it's actually him. His style is a bit more 'crude', (esp how he draws his eyes and nose) but it is very similar

Nah its gotta be mignolas the shadowing looks similar with the little bits sticking out of shadows to signify the transition from light to dark.
Edit: Mike Mignola was involved in the making of thus ending he oversaw the creative process and everything with a couple of other people in a team.
Hellboy's a simple guy. Give him some open space, a little piece and quite, maybe a demon or two to shoot, and he's good.

Hellboy in the comics has a very "seen it all" attitude mixed with "I'm getting to old for this".
Knowing how HB reacts to...everything, we can all assume his reaction to looking out the porthole and seeing Earth rapidly rise to meet the skullship was "Oy, that ain't good."
After watch BPRD ending, I just want to say goodbye Hellboy and all BPRD warriors.

Saw the new movie yesterday, awesome reboot and glad it's rated R this time. Hope a sequel will happen. If he did stay a little longer in the DC Universe, he would have been the perfect member of Justice League Dark.
