This is Unsurpassable. Her devotion and willingness to abandon herself to the emotional range, and all seamlessly connected to that gorgeous tone- so many colors, all completely clear and precise. She ranks with the greatest- Fischer-Discau, Callas, and in fact she may be above all.
Absolutely gorgeous! To this day, Dame Janet Baker's interpretation of these fantastic songs are still my favorite. Passion and artistry combined with a voice of luminous timbre make her an artist to be emulated.
I fully agree that this is a splendid performance. But for me, the greatest of all interpreters of the mélodie française repertoire remains my friend, the late Gérard Souzay (who has left us a splendid recording of Berlioz's cycle, 'Les nuits d'été', from which this song is drawn).
Listening to these recordings I am full of regrets. I was privileged to hear Dame Janet perform live here in London. The regrets are that she did not sing these works but Mahler and Elgar. To have been blessed to hear these performances live would be more than anyone has a right to ask. I do have the studio recordings she made with Barbirolli, which are excellent but they lack the frisson of a live performance.
Beide mij favorieten for sure. ruclips.net/video/TcTAbZ5lgbI/видео.html Begins at 9.18 minutes.
Hello there, This IS a long time for a reply, but I have only just seen your comment. I think what you(and I) are hearing is a "pre echo" on the tape.If you are old enough to remember vinyl(?) and listened to it on headphones, you may remember you got a sort of echo of the voice to follow when a track started on the LP.I am not sure exactly what causes it but it's a technical fault. As this recording was made ages ago in 1972 I think that is probably the explanation?

Beautiful! Jane Baker sings the French songs as nobody else. Merci!

Known effect with the old magnetic tapes. Everyone who owned audio cassettes will be familiar with it.
Shall we all propose to the exquisite Baker??
I second that.
@jennifersullivan28 : I think it is due to the age of the video tape, I heard it too
@mdol: No, there is just one!
