I've listened to a lot of your videos and I so appreciate how you come across very friendly and knowing what you're talking about, but also, that I could easily allow my grandchild to watch any of your fine videos because you don't use "trash talk"{cursing} and are very professional. I greatly enjoy your videos and in case you don't know, you also have a wonderful speaking{radio} talk show type voice that is very calming and relaxing. Thank you for your hard work and your videos are very unique. I love the 1911 videos, all of them. God bless you, Adam

I don’t have any problem spending 5-7 minutes cleaning and lubing my 1911’s after a range session. Never had a problem with Colt, Springfield, and Ruger 1911’s. I have seen some nasty, gunked up pistols of all makes and models.

Excellent video with great helpful tips! As you said, even less expensive 1911's can be kept running for years if properly maintained and minor changes made. I have an Auto Ordnance 1911A1 bought almost 30 years ago and it still runs like a champ.

Problem with heavy recoil spring is the muzzle dive after lockup. It may help tame the higher power loads.. but on the way back to battery that extra power really works against you. I stick to regular springs and standard loads. K.i.s.s :)

Not saying what you said is not true however the one I built was just fine. It ran perfectly on the first go, it ran through 2 different mags by different manufacturers (Checkmate and Kimbers cheap mag) with different ammo. I intentionally tried to cause the pistol to malfunction under normal use and it would not.
Now what made mine so different and so reliable and work so well. What I believe gave it the reliability the most was in the finish I did. I chose to parkerize the slide with the idea that the entire slide would be reduced in the acid bath by a extremely small amount increasing the clearances slightly. The parkerizing literally took 3 hours due to the much smaller amount of phosphoric acid I used. Because I knew it did this is why I chose to reduce the amount of acid and make double sure the sacrificial metal placed in the bath did not run out.
A lot of 1911's suffer from todays tighter fit. Unfortunately people thinks this makes the gun better in some way. However it does not. This is why the clearance on a crankshaft and the mains are so closely monitored in the building of an engine. Like an engine a gun is a simple machine and clearances have to be met for it to work smoothly. Apply that type of fit to an engine cam or crankshaft and try turning it by hand and you will literally feel why it is a grave mistake to do this to any machine. That engine will knock in less than 5000 miles. The reason it will knock is because lubrication cannot do its job and get where it needs to go and so this makes the bearings dry and they wear very quickly. What good is gun oil if you do not allow any place for it to live on the machine? Tighter is not ever good in any machine and that is applied to not only engines but rear ends of cars and trucks. Just try to wing the tightening of a pinion nut without a new crush washer on a freshly rebuilt diff on a truck and see how far it gets. Any machine will bind on itself if clearances are too tight. On the 1911 this includes the bottom of the slide with the top of the frame and the rails themselves. Those perfect fits are leaving the rails without oil or a very small amount of it.
Understanding any machine is what leads to the reliability of it. tight clearances on a machine are only good on any non moving parts. On engines this would be a head to block fit. Jean Bugatti lapped his blocks and heads so flat the requirement for a head gasket was not needed this is good as the head does not move on the block. But he did not do this on the moving parts because he knew sparkling oil means not good. Want to know if its true take a tight 1911 apart and wipe the black crap out of the rails and then put it under a very bright led flashlight in a very dark room and watch how beautiful the sparkles are. The black crap is the metal literally wearing away. Eventually the pistol will become more reliable the more it is used because by design it will wear to the point the clearances are increased. However depending on how often a person shoots their gun it could take years before it is.
Also for the "thats why glock is better" like it or not but every Glock uses a recoil design thought of and invented by.......wait for it............John Browning the inventor of the 1911. So that 1911 you hate so much is literally the grandfather of the Glock. All Gaston Glock did was figure out how to use a lighter weight material but the design of the pistol itself belongs to Browning. Curse the 1911 all you want and call it finicky but its history speaks for itself. The Glock is a good pistol...ugly but good but just like the 1911 it has its own pitfalls including the ability for the dust cover of the frame to droop when it heats up and the wear mark on every one of them exposing the steel reinforcements embedded into the polymer. Again Glocks are great guns but the 1911 is also a great gun and calling it anything but when its service history is what it is well is just silly.

The reason I love the 1911 boils down to one thing, I hit with it, better than any other pistol, up close=faster, at range =more accurate.. That's the point, right? The bottom line is, in my opinion, I am very well versed and Trained with MY 1911 and I trust my life and the lives of people I love with it by my side every day and no matter what you choose to carry you should feel the same way and train to that level PERIOD of what you choose to trust your life with... Operated 1911s boh in and out of the military and in and out of the field here at home (private security, guard, bodyguard, money-truck guard for dispensaries, high risk assignments, generally)....I was going to go for the one favored by the division of operations I was in by my third tour, mostly Springfield, a few Ruger SR1911s, a Kimber TLE2 (bought one of those, no rail) anyway....I own Glocks, Berettas, Springfield XDm .40, USP .40, HK P2000 V2 .40, SIG Sauer P226 DAK .40, DA/SA .40/357 SIG version as well, the SIG P220 /w SRT DA/SA trigger is my favorite, or was...until I got the SIG Scorion 1911! Load it with polycase rounds, weigh 118 grain and not nearly as much kick, or muzzle-flip, etc. And as much or more stopping power than your standard Gold Dot +P
I wanted a Les Baer initially, or Ed Brown, but the SIG 1911 Scorpion was so nice, so many great features, shot so well, and I got it for only $750 (got $300 taken off of it, hard to beat that)

I have never had a hang up on my two 1911’s. One is a Springfield 1911 stainless loaded model and a Colt 1911 made in the 1950’s.
I clean the barrel and slide rails and use synthetic grease on them, most importantly I use top notch magazines and always keep a new strong 16 pound recoil spring in the pistols which are both 5 inch guns, deviations from 16lb recoil spring is only for specialty ammo so stick to what works. As in all my guns and rifles keep strong magazine springs in your magazines, use chrome silicone ones if you can find them. Other than that my 1911 is carried 65% of the time worth no issue.

a few months ago I bought a used Springfield EMP4, got home and looked up reviews and everyone was saying it's picky about ammo, 2 or 3 hundred rnds and at least 8 different bullet style, and weights and not one malfunction, then last month I got a good deal on a new Kimber Lw 9mm. Again many reviews were saying Kimbers are crap, so my first trip to the range had me worried. And like Springfield, using 2 different mags and at least 5 different rounds including 2 different hollow points and it's just a sweet shooting firearm. So I take reviews lightly.

The factory Colt mags that came with my Colt were terrible. Wilson Combat 47D work every time.
When It comes to self defense ammo I would still carry round ball ammo. It is what the gun was designed to use it is what the military used and it still has a history of knock down power.

Until recently I had always sworn by Wilson combat mags in every 1911 I owed, but I bought an Ed Brown Special Forces, and although the mags worked they would not hold open on the last round. I tried some McCormic mags and they sometimes worked. The only mag that reliably held open was the Ed Brown 7 mag that came with the pistol. So, I ordered some 8 round mags from Ed Brown, these not only hold open but work flawlessly, so that’s all I will use in the special forces. I still use Wilson Combat in the other 1911s.

Just as important as having a properly tuned extractor is having a properly fitted firing pin stop. Most lower end production models, or not fully custom models will have the firing pin stop just dropped in. For best reliability, it is important to have an oversized firing pin stop custom fit to the gun. Both these procedures are very easy imo. The clocking or moving around of the extractor is due to a loosely fitted firing pin stop. Weird your nighthawk would have that problem.

Lots of great info here . I've owned at least 50 or so 1911's a bunch of Colts ,Para's in all shapes and sizes .I own 4 1911's at this moment . They all are Kimbers , Ultra Carry Custom shop CDP an Comander Size Pro CDP II .I also havea full size S/S Classic that I sent back to Kimber to make a CDP out of it at the custom shop including front serrations in the slide , checkering it ect .And last but not least my KimberCustom TLE/RL II . I have fired thousands of rounds thru each pistol including range ammo and all kinds of self defense ammo . I would trust my life with any of these pistols , they have all the correct carry and combat parts that I have installed or have had installed . I started my quest in the early 1970's to learn to shoot a 1911. After about 30 plus years of collecting and shooting 1911's GoldCups you name it .I was introduced to the Kimber . After another 10yrs messing with the Kimbers I found the ones that work for me . Not sure about what they a building nowadays , the ones I own today in my expereince are the best of best both worlds for carry and combat. One last item I have always used Wilson Combats mags and small parts .

The only gun to have 0 malfunctions is the 1911. That’s why it was adopted, they also stated that they did Not want anything less than a

Had a gunsmith put in a Wilson Combat hammer and beavertail, then installed an extended mag release and mag well funnel. Of course that slick grip was god-awful so I put on Hogue rubber double diamond pattern grips and a strip of skateboard tape on the front strap. Truly love that combo. My Colt made 1911A1 Government issue that is 75 years old can shoot any type rounds using the two issue magazines people say will not work. It's tighter than most new guns. I think it comes down to just checking what cycles well in your gun. Not all 1911's are the same and some are finicky and some are not. I have a Rock Island Mid sized 1911 in 10mm and it has been 100% reliable so far. I trust my 1911 for carry. Some brands can have issues. I have found that the Wilson Combat 10mm mags work well in my gun. So one just needs to fire a lot of different brands of ammo to see what works well in their gun. Then go with it. I have never had a 1911 that has been unreliable and I have had three of them over the years. One was a Colt, RI and Llama. The Llama was very cheap and it even worked well. The Colt was a little finicky, but it was a Double Eagle the double action 1911 they made.

    Hey, great video again sir.
You do a lot of handgun stuff (as your username shows). Any advice for those of us sticking it out here in CT that are trying to find a way to live with these gun laws? Been looking at the ARs that are still available to own in this state. Stag Arms seems to be the only option but I don't want to pay $1000+ for a 22.

Whatisright thanks! I'm primarily a handgun guy for sure. I don't really have any comments on our sorry state...I wish things were different. I would love to get an AR again. I sold a few of them in the past and regret doing so. Attempted to buy one before the new laws went in but it was impossible. I actually was willing to buy one at an inflated cost but they were sold out everywhere. I remember one shop got in a bunch of Rugers but I had to wait in line and by the time I got in they were sold out. I would look at a Mini-30 but... mag restrictions...BAH. Hang in there and keep fighting the good fight!

Chances are u will never need to use ur gun in self defense in your life and if you DO then u got a .45 cal projectile that WORKED in how many wars?...

In my opinion, the problem with the 1911 is that there is no longer patent protection. Only Glock may build Glocks but anybody can build the 1911 and do. A lot of poorly built versions are on the market for cheap, for newbies. My recommendation is that you by from a war company - Colt, Remington, Springfield, etc. They've built millions for over a century and have gotten it right.

I'm also .45 guy and feel this is the best round for it. If you like a different round that's your business. The Ruger shot perfectly right out of the box. Not sure if you still check back on posts made of this video or not but I have a Colt 1911 Gvt model that I hand load for as well as a 9mm M&P. So far my 9mm M&P as been pretty picky in feeding/extract my reloads whereas my 45acp reloads both fmj-rn and xtp-hp all have feed reliably through my 1911. I hoping that my still being a novice handload is the reason for the 9mm ammo issues. So for the 9mm 124gr xt-hp have feed well and accurate but I only ran two magazines through it.

Wilson combat mags if you want reliability for me. All my mags work fine from colt, atx, mecgar, and wilson. I have 2 colts, one government model, one defender, and a smith wesson pro series compact. They all rock but for carry i love my smith! If you are getting started in 1911 i suggest a colt because its like your baptism. They are real nice. If you arent a collector or if its not a serious hobby, Get something practical and reliable for defense or carry and i wouldnt get a 1911. Me though, i love my 1911s more than the rest and hardball will be fine. Hollowpoint is overkill, a 45 hardball will do the job, its a huge powerfull round, it will be fine.
1911s are great, if you love to shoot and collect, buy one. They are great.

It pretty much sat in a safe or holster in the meantime. With light lube before training course it jammed twice. Seemed like it wasn’t feeding very well and I had to tap the slide into battery. But after the gun got hot it went smooth. Maybe I got lucky but I really haven’t had problems with mine

That speaks miles to Wilson man. But anyway I should do an update vid as I had an issue with a Chip McCormick a month or so ago with my Rail Gun in which it started to lock the slide on a full mag... so I put that one to the side... IMO, this "disposable" day and age has the misconception of "reliability". Upgrade your cell phones and video games every 6 mos or a yr. Granted, many polymer frame pistols are Very reliable.
    But it's like your auto
Industry now, a new car every 5 or 6 yrs.
The 1911 is from an era when a new car (if you performed normal maintenance on a regular basis) would last you 30 to 40 yrs or longer.

  • @AGC828

    I'd never rely on a 1911 for "carry". As a range gun..yes.
    Let's say we have a 7+1 chambered in 45 acp...1st attacker is spotted...fire off 4 shots (1 from the pipe+3 from mag)...now there 4 rounds left. 5th shot hits a tree. Now 3 rounds left...put 2 in intruder #1...1 round left...suddenly 2 of his buddies appear...then from behind another...
Scenario #2...3 attackers and you ID only 1 as an attacker/armed...Nervous, accidentally let 2 rounds go, Into the ground. Aim at attacker #1...miss him firing 2 rounds...FOUR gone--now, put 2 in attacker #1...that's SIX spent rounds...2 more rounds left in the ma!! :P Other two guys start firing rounds back...fire off 2 rounds aiming for attacker #2...one hits him in the leg...8th round misses...didn't spot the 4th and 5th attacker behind you...etc.

    • @marcogram1216

STEVE P heavy? Maybe a bit, but not too heavy. Single action? That’s one of the highlights. A lot of moving parts? No not that many , I’m guessing your not too familiar with the 1911. Finicky? Not a good one. With that said choose whatever you want but don’t trust your life to cheap firearms they are cheap for a reason. I have several glocks and carry them every now and again. But primarily I carry a 1911. I’ve also only had one catastrophic failure in my life, and it was a glock, they took care of it and I know it’s not the norm but that’s never happened in the 10’s of thousands of rounds I’ve put through 1911’s. My les Baer has around 15000 rounds through it without a hick up with all sorts of ammo. To each their own carry on my friend

1911s are super cool guns, but I don't understand using them for serious use.
I'd love to buy one as a range only gun that I just shoot for fun, but by the time you spend $1,000 on a decent 1911, you have to buy all new magazines, possible gunsmithing work, and hundreds and hundreds of rounds of ammo, especially a lot of defensive rounds.
So you have $1,000 in the gun, and by the time you get all the parts and work to get it to run right, you're another $250, and then the ammo to make sure it's reliable is another $350-400.
You could easily be $2,000 into a 1911 by the time it's ready for serious use, when you could buy another gun and lots of ammo and training for that, or just save the money.
1911s are beautiful guns, and I hope to own one, but a carry gun is a self defense tool, and should be selected and treated as such, a tool. As the saying goes, the warrior should not have a favorite weapon.

galamonkey The US, not to mention countless other countries, used the 1911 for years and has recently been adopted again by the Marines and the Army is even considering them for the new trials that seems like serious use to me…As for the cost yes you can buy a 1, 2, 3 thousand dollar handgun but there are plenty of 1911s out there priced great that are extremely reliable. My daily carry is a $630 Ruger 1911 I've pumped over 1500 rounds through it from TulAmmo to Buffalo Bore and its been flawless out of the box no work required.
