    I had so much fun recreating that Daft Punk track last time I decided to come back for a second helping. Ten more in fact! I picked a decade of delicious synth treats from my music collection and spent a day recreating them on my homemade eurorack system. We modular nerds have a (perhaps deserved) reputation for being the noodly and undisciplined nomads of the synth world, so I wanted to show another side of the instrument!
    And to all my wooly and wired synth comrades out there patching in the blinking darkness, I salute you. Onward to higher planes of sound.
    Here is the tracklist:
    0:00 Disclosure - "When a Fire Starts to Burn"
    1:01 Riton & Kah-Lo - "Fake ID"
    1:57 Fatboy Slim - "Acid 8000"
    3:17 Simian Mobile Disco - "Cruel Intentions"
    4:02 Booka Shade - "Friend for a Night"
    5:20 Justice - "Waters of Nazareth"
    7:07 Kavinsky - "Nightcall"
    8:06 Roisin Murphy - "Overpowered"
    9:36 Soulwax - "Krack"
    10:42 Todd Terje - "Ragysh"

      Heck yes! Booka Shade is another of the few acts that do live PA with synths, check them out if you have the chance!

    I literally come back to this and listen to this. I know it's a tech demo but man would be cool to have this in album length with full songs. I'd blast that.

    Hah! Regarding your comment about the TB303, there is only one true clone, and that's the DinSync RE-303. It's a board to board, part to part replica. So much so, these new parts can be used to repair old busted TB303s. It's a home DIY kit. Take's a bit of research to track down the rare parts but I feel that sort of project is right up your alley! I just finished building mine and it makes my x0xb0x sound like a Behringer!
    Looking forward to getting your sequencer in the mail mate! Keep up the great work!

    Just found your channel today, really interesting videos! I fell in love when I heard Acid 8000 which I feel you nailed more or less perfectly! Just wondering, could you show, from zero/randomize all knobs to the "final" setup when you recreate the sounds and rhythm to make that song? I'm not after what specific modules you use or how to recreate it myself, just wondering how you go ahead to set it all up, how you find the sounds and such. I'm thinking of building some modules myself, just to see if this is something for me. I'm not as good with analog stuff, I'm working with designing digital boards all days long, but been more and more interested to try synths and see if its something for me.
    Would love to see a setup video for the Acid 8000 - if that's something you would be interesting in creating a video on :)

    Amazing ! Would it be possible to make a video where you explain in detail how you have created these songs? What modules you have used and how you have patched them? That would be amazing for beginners like me!

      May do a follow up and show a little of that, yeah! The sounds are surprisingly simple to get for most of em

      Extralife nice one. It’s just the sound is so woody and knocky. Really great combo even if it is simple. Finding these combos of oscillators and filters are part of the joy of modular I find.

    This was fun! About how long did it take to program each clip? Were any especially easy or especially difficult?

    • @extralifedisco
      @extralifedisco  4 года назад +1

      Hmm, maybe 20 minutes to get a good approximation going for most of them. I was surprised how easy the Justice line was, their skill is really in the little production details, not complex programming. That Roisin Murphy line kept me scratching my head, had to break out the ableton time-stretch and go note-by-note at about 40 BPM :)

    is your case home made? if not, where did you get it? also if it is, where did you get the housing itself?

    • @extralifedisco
      @extralifedisco  4 года назад

      Yep, 100% homemade. It's built from 1/4" plywood and about 10 feet of aluminum channel/corner extrusions. It was really an improvised build so I didn't document it but any old box will do as long as it's tall enough to fit 6U rails in and deep enough for modules and a busboard. I'm actually making a quick DIY case video right now, keep your eyes peeled for that!

  • @AndrewPRoberts

    How are you doing sidechain?

    • @extralifedisco
      @extralifedisco  3 года назад +2

      No sidechain on this mix I don't think, just some healthy buss limiting in post, and all the drums are going through the wampler ego compressor pedal at a pretty aggressive squish, which is great bc it has the dry/wet control for parallel compression.

    Is that your own 303 clone?

    • @extralifedisco
      @extralifedisco  4 года назад

      The sequencer is certainly 303-inspired! I like to think the workflow is a lot easier though, and CV means it has a lot more flexibility. Sometimes a reduced feature-set is good though, makes you make music you wouldn't otherwise try.
