Last time, I talked about the miraculous use of "rebirth quilts". Today, I will tell you how to use rebirth quilts. The first thing everyone is concerned about is what color of rebirth quilts should be chosen. Generally speaking, the colors of rebirth quilts are yellow, red, and sometimes golden. I tell you fellow practitioners that the difference in color is due to the different preferences of sentient beings, and it is purely personal preference. Generally speaking, yellow is the most common, red is for the deceased who are older, over the age of 80. According to the funeral customs in many places, all the deceased over the age of 80 are treated as happy occasions, so they use red quilts. Gold looks a little rich and noble. Some people love gold very much and decorate everything with gold, very rich people. Have you ever seen a gold toilet? I have seen it. Therefore, different colors are purely personal preferences and choices and don't have much to do with whether or not one is able to be reborn. When a rebirth quilt is unfolded, it is a little longer than a person. When using it, it needs to be facing the correct direction. The side with the six characters of "Namo Amida Buddha" must face up, covering the head and chest. Generally speaking, it only needs to cover up to the chest, not necessarily to cover up the head. But if the death appearance of the deceased is very ugly, such as die from a car accident or suicide, the death appearance is very tragic, unbearable, and makes others have nightmares, so as not to scare people, then covering the head is okay too. As for when it is more appropriate to cover up with a rebirth quilt, there is no standard answer to this. I can only say this to fellow practitioners: it varies from person to person. Generally, if one has practiced Buddhism for a certain amount of time, has a certain chanting skill, and knows that there is not much time left, then it's best to be covered with it as soon as possible, the sooner the better. If one has not studied Buddhism, or just started to study Buddhism, and doesn't have certain good roots, then as a family member, in my opinion, you still need to be extra cautious. Because that person is not ready, doesn't want to leave, is reluctant and resistant, and there are too many obstacles. At this time, if the family covers him with a rebirth quilt, it will increase his burden, even increase his hatred, and make him worried, which will be counterproductive. So, in a situation like this, wait until he's gone, then cover him gently, that's okay too. I often tell fellow practitioners that we Buddhists must have wisdom. There is no set method, it varies from person to person. The Dharma is flexible, and the practice of the Dharma is not immutable. When we living people use the Dharma, we mustn't use the Dharma rigidly, and we must not be too stubborn. After covering with a rebirth quilt, the next thing to pay attention to is: If it is a burial, generally speaking, the body is placed in a coffin, a rebirth quilt directly covers the body of the deceased and will be buried together with the body of the deceased. If it is a cremation, usually before the coffin is sealed and cremated, please remember to take out the rebirth quilt and fold it well. After the cremation when you get the ashes, wrap the urn with the rebirth quilt. This is the most correct procedure and the most Dharma-abiding. Because rebirth quilts are not allowed to be cremated, why? The reason is very simple, rebirth quilts have rebirth mantra, mantra wheels, and Buddha names. There will be faults when incinerating, so it is best not to cremate. However, the following situations should be considered separately: If a sick and dying person vomits blood, or the body festers, causing the rebirth quilt to be covered with pus and blood; if a person who dies in a car or other accident vomits a lot of blood, and the whole rebirth quilt is covered in blood; also, the epidemic situation is still very serious, if a patient has an infectious disease, the quilt has to be cremated as a last resort for safety, then that's fine. As long as we handle the cremation with respect and chant "Namo Amida Buddha" during the cremation, then that's fine. I also told fellow practitioners last time that rebirth quilts were not only used at death, but also had the function of dispelling disasters and warding off evil spirits. For our Buddhist chanting disciples here, it is best for each of us to prepare one. The day when impermanence arrives, you will know it is useful. I tell you fellow practitioners that we will use them one day. Everyone, don't wait until the end of your life to be in a hurry and go everywhere to find a rebirth quilt. Especially in the US, you may not be able to find one. Therefore, if our fellow practitioners don't have one, no matter if you are alright, whether you are ill or not, you should go to a temple to request one and keep it at home as a home protector. After you get one back home, be sure to put it in the drawer of a Buddha table above your waist or choose a clean place for the Buddhist altar to enshrine. In this way, when you do your rites in the morning and evening, you can also recite the rebirth mantra to reinforce it. Why do I suggest that everyone request one back? The most important thing is that I think that we, as chanting Buddhists, I tell you fellow practitioners that rebirth quilts are the best reminder for us. They remind us: the world is impermanent, the country is in danger and fragile, the Four Great Elements are suffering and empty, and the Five Aggregates are without self. They remind us: to live in the moment, to live every day well, and to grasp every moment of life. If we see rebirth quilts every day, prepare for our rebirths at all times, and never forget the word "death", this is like Master Yinguang writing the word "death" in his retreat room. In this way, think about death and impermanence, and never loose in any thoughts, then why should we worry about failing in cultivation! Namaste, Amitabha!
