Sonic 06 didn’t have a water level, don’t know about unleashed since I never played it.
06 and unleashed didn't have water levels therefore Sonic didn't have a drowning animation, water was sometimes present at the bottom of the level and he just dies falling in.

Honestly, the original (Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 on the MegaDrive) is still by far the best. It gets straight to the point of it being panic-inducing, and that sinister string gradually getting louder and louder to drive up the anxiety until it all suddenly cuts off.

When I played sonic as a kid, the drowning sound always gave me anxiety. Not only because I had watched sonic.exe recently which had that soundtrack but also because I hate having a small amount of time to do something.
