The melody structure has its roots in old boogie woogie progressions, particularly at the end of each line ("out of my head" "running away", "snake in the grass" etc). That might be what you're hearing. That kind of progression (three adjacent notes going either up or down, or up and back down, or down and back up) are a recurring motif in boogie woogie music (where a piano player would be banging out chords with that walk up/walk down), and a lot of 70's songwriters were influenced by it. The falsetto "ooh whoo-hoo"s are also reminiscent a bit of flourishes that the Beach Boys used to accent their music with. There's also a little doo wop in there. What made it sound contemporary, however, was that pounding, pulsing, hypnotic beat. Jeff Lynne is a genius.. I'm so glad you covered this one and loved it like I do! Do more ELO!

ELO is going on tour this August and September. They are a great live performance with their 12-14 piece band with a light show. I saw them in Portland, Oregon 5 years ago and Dani Harrison and his band opened the concert. Great evening it was for my wife and I!

That's so cool that you want to share this with your daughters. That's great. And it's funny you mention the Beatles because Jeff Lynne kind of The mastermind behind ELO, was a massive Beatles fan and collaborated with Paul McCartney on some fun stuff and possibly other of the Beatles as well I'm not sure.
I can't remember if you've already reacted to Mr Blue Sky, but it was a huge hit for them in the late seventies and definitely a fan favorite for so many of us. It's a masterpiece.

Telephone Line and Livin Thing, live at Wembley Stadium are good ones. I really like ELO's lesser-known songs better, like Prologue Twilight, Shangri La, Ticket to the Moon, Starlight, Fire on High, Tightrope, Last Train to London, Another heart breaks, Believe me now/Stepping out. On and on...

Jeff Lynne (who comes from my home City of Birmingham, UK) is a great musician and producer. E.L.O. had loads of fantastic songs and sound just as good live as they do on the studio versions. My favourite song of theirs is 'All Over The World' which is a really happy song. There are lots of flash mob videos on YT to this song. Jeff Lynne was also in the super group 'Travelling Wilburys' with George Harrison (TheBeatles), Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.

Recommend going to see them live on the Over and Out Tour. They’re playing at least three dates in Texas in October. Got my tickets for Dallas.
Edited to add- there is often a flashback to earlier music eras with ELO. Jeff Lynne was influenced heavily by the styles of music he grew up listening to (50s-60s).

  • @lauraallen55

I just watched your Tightrope reaction. Not sure how I missed and ELO reaction! Based on how much you liked the instrrumental portion of that one, you would love Fire On High from Face the Music. It's all instrumental, and it's fire lol! You would also love the entire album of El Dorado. It's a mix of instrumentals and regular songs with lyrics. Can't Get It Out of My Head is on it. That one is really different from any ELO you've heard (well, they both are) and it's very dreamy. Strange Magic is another that's very dreamy, and different from the rest.

Best live performance I can suggest of ELO is a cover of Roll Over Beethoven!
Yes, ELO sounds different in a lot of their songs. Do Ya is one to check out, Confusion, Starlight, Shangri-La, and you'll get a lot of different vibes. Telephone Line as others say is just magnificent.
Oh yeah: Jeff Lynned is a musical genius. :)
Is there more to check out? Oh my yes, so much more. Ooh- Strange Magic and Can't Get It Out of My Head. Now those are a different vibe even than any of the others.

This is a real rocker. It came later in their career, after the string of mid 70s hits. I always associate it with fairgrounds, as the ride whizzes around. A great track.
Other ELO ones to consider, I don't think you've done The diary of Horace Wimp, or Wild West Hero. Both are pretty good. Nice one S. I like ELO.
