I have wanted a suit of armor for a while but with my heart defect I was born with I have a defibrillator and a 50lb weight limit. These look so cool, and I could actually wear them. I know what’s going on my Christmas list now
A beautiful example of why this armor is awesome! Get a set and wear it with pride my dude. My uncle had a heart condition and it limited what he could do (though he still tried his best!)
The site lists an average weight for the foam brigandine of 1.5kg. I have winter coats that weigh more than that. They don't look quite as awesome, either.
I love it... I had no idea that wasn't your normal armor... I see it now of course, now that I'm looking for it. But otherwise, I didn't know.
I honestly didn't know either. I also play video games while listening to Shad, so it's not like I was really looking at the video to begin with, but I am absolutely certain I would have been fooled too even if I had been just watching the video. Unless you're really looking, the armor looks legit. For costumes this stuff is perfect.
I didn't notice either, even looking at them both I can just see the difference in the pauldrons the rest is basically perfect.

I-it looks fake
Look at the armor.... is it real?... no it's not, it's foam... look over there... what's that? That's a castle. Wrong again, it's a green screen. Look how I roll it up out of the way. See behind it? That's my archery range. Or, is it? No it's not. That's my armor stand. But I'm not standing.... I'm on a horse.
_wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-whistle!_
"How many of you have noticed that the castle has been replaced by an actual stone construct in this video?"
What?!?
The chronic fatigue could be due to the energy expended for every time Shad yelled "MACHICULATIOOOONS!". Feel better, sir knight.
The second he started talking about proposing a fake brigandine I was like,
"Lol, what if the one he's wearing is fake." Then I heard the ominous music.
Same here LOL I got all sketched out especially when the music started. Then I felt dumb
I also had a strange fealing about it
My thought only went as far as "it would be 100% undetectable to viewers" especially if the bolts were actually metal or metal plated.
I thought the same! As soon as he started talking thought "I bet the one he's wearing is fake. They've already made one"
And to be fair, it was ONLY based on the comments. No chance I could tell based on looks!
I did notice the shoulders appeared to look lighter, but I passed it off as not watching the channel for long enough
"Now, why would you want this?"
Stop.
Why wouldn't you?
I dig the steel mixed with the brigadine look.
Also very authentic. Medieval soldiers often wore greaves and helm with brigandines.
Brigandines, as shown in the video would be excellent for movies. No neec for actual metal under if it doesn't need to be seen.
I kept waiting for the reveal that "Shad" was actually his brother in full silicone prosthetics the whole time. Also I like that he built a huge castle facade and then decided to get a green screen.
Winter and night time exist...

@@bruhdenegressive7887 And rain, snow, and sandstorms.
With the brigandine, the shoulders are definitely the big give away. I also personally think that the chest of the metal looks like a tighter fit. The shoulders on the foam fold also there’s definitely a difference notable in the materials.
First rule of stealth : people usually see what they expect to see, if something does not obviously differ from the norm, people will not look for it. You got me with the second test Shad.

oh gosh now you'll probably tell me that the castle is just a facade too..
did you see the video where he plans on building three full-sized fake castles in the shadlands with polyfoam?
The shoulders on the "fake" brigandine bend a little. That's the only way I've been able to tell.
Agreed. It creases a little bit. If the shoulders had some PVC or other rigid plastic inside them, I think it'd be perfect.
The fake shoulder armor goes past Shad’s elbow. The real shoulder armor does not doe to the fact it does not bend.
If he wore the real pauldrons with the fake brigandine... I don't think there would be a way to tell. I think the studs bend a little on the fake one, so you can see a difference in how the light reflects... But if you don't already suspect it may be fake i don't think you can tell.
Yeah, it's very noticeable. Once you have seen it you notice it every time he changes brigandines.
Shads brigandine looks like shit. More Hollywood than real. And those floppy wide trousers make it totally fantasy. Don't understand me wrong, I think he's a great guy. It's just the armour. The proportions are totally off the scale.
How I love seeing Shads progression over the years. The humor, the passion, the fun and the great ideas of conext that really is interesting, i think, to most viewers. Its always spot on and I keeping having a smile on my face after watching a video. All this while also learn new things in the meantime. Now THATS brilliant!
Shads neighbours: "Honey, the neighbour is wearing a metal armor now"
"Naah, that's a faux armor."
I had a feeling the brigandine was different due to the difference in noise when you moved but I assumed you had just had the edges padded inside or something to quiet it down. Would not have guessed it was foam.
When talking about film especially, this kind of armour could be especially interesting for stunt performers because of the added flexibility, lighter weight and and it being more affordable thus being less painful to have damaged.
Not to mention you could easily include rigid pads inside more expensive suits/stunt suits, so that the movement is right, and even more protection for the performer.
Not could, is
Lighter, more flexible and affordable than what? Authentic looking steel armour is totally unheard of in film. Most costume armour even for lead actors in big budget movies looks even worse than Shad's armour (which looks terrible.) and is made of soft, synthetic materials already. Has been for over 100 years.
Costumes mass produced for the general public aren't at the forefront of synthetic costume technology. You're going to see much more advanced stuff happening on 200 million dollar film productions. We aren't getting the best of it and we never will, not unless we do it ourselves or buy custom.
@@7dayspking so you're both saying that big budget costumes look way worse than what is shown here but also that big budget stuff will always look better than what a consumer could purchase? Of course, outfitting every main character with an authentic suit of armour worth multiple grands is not economic within a movie budget and thus cheaper alternatives are sought. My argument is that what shad has presented looks miles better than most stuff I have come across in cinema and by it's more affordable and flexible nature as opposed to steel could make for a valid alternative to film makers interested in historical accuracy.
@@galumir I said you're going to see more advanced 'stuff happening with costumes' referring to materials, production techniques and costs. I was referring to work custom done for film productions. Not the mass produced, decades old costumes they often rent in bulk for film.
This synthetic armor of Shad's costs nearly 'multiple of grands'. It isn't affordable. It costs about the same as a low end historical medieval battle kit, think on that for a second.
This is amazing. I had just kind of "accepted" the fact that armor and larp would never be accessible to me because of my health issues, but now it is! I feel like I can dream again :')
You can also use much thinner metal for costume armor. One of my suits only weighs 15 lbs (6.8kg) the other advantage is it's more flexible than the real stuff.
I didn’t even realized that the briganden was fake, I was completely focused on the plate armor, I didn’t even noticed the bending on the pauldrons, until some people pointed out.
yes the right pauldron is the only problem
the bending pauldrons was for sure the giveaway for me. Other than that its perfect
Yeah the pauldron was the only thing that caught my attention too. But in the greenscreen segment, I couldn't tell when he switched back and forth. Speaking of, that was damn good editing. There were no seams at all. I watched multiple times to try and find where he was switching armor
He didn't rattle, which made me suspicious. For video and films it really does not matter as long as they take into account the low weight and don't hit it with a real weapon.
if the title was not about fake armor, and he just wear it casually like his other vides, i will never be able to tell
Next video; I've been using a polyurethane Shad puppet all along!!!
Shad will have ascended beyond humane knowledge.

Man of Culture...
faux(French is a silly language)
The fake brigandine is really close but the pauldrons have this weird bend in it that makes it look weird so if you can send that to steel mastery so they can make the fake pauldrons a little stiffer I'm sure it would fool a lot more people
Maybe the pauldrons could be polioretane (or whatever this is written) mixed with Eva so it would bend more like a real brigandine
@@hdnfbp yes that could definitely work as a fix for sure practice swords are made out of polyurethane and it's a good substitute for metal if you want to make a rigid thing made to seem like metal
Agreed, the pauldrons have very noticeable flex. When Shad moved with the sword his right pauldron bend rather unnatural: 26:41
Hehe, stiff.
I completely believed it was the actual thing, and the thought it was fake never came to mine.
I jokingly thought to myself, "He'll reveal the gambeson to be fake as well, won't he?". The reveal still surprised me!
Agreed, its only while moving in it that it shows itself much, as the slightly odd reflections could just be because the environment has inconsistent lighting.
The plate's finish looks good, and the brig... bloody hell its nearly identical, but looking at the shoulder on the brig as he swung the sword it was very apparent in how it creased something was off, sound (for video at least) is actually better in the fake, as it doesn't make that clink that is sometimes picked up by the mic, authentic as that is, and a few other times the flexibility suggests it is fake, as we have watched Shad in his real one enough to see he is either really on fire today, or fighting less resistance.
Overall bloody impressive stuff - perhaps a slight stiffening of the shoulder on the brig so it creases more like the heavy metal ones.
I thought the plate had a sort of odd, "soft" finish to it, but I thought that was just a choice. I still thought it was metal, though! It does look nice. Extremely convincing.
@@foldionepapyrus3441 yeah, personally I'd add some plastic plates for some rigidity. And unless you really get attacked by a long sword/bow, those plastic plates can also give some protection
@@guiorgy Possibly better protection than steel for LARP HEMA stuff - A few mm of HDPE will stop the penetration and flex quite alot absorbing much of the energy. Wouldn't choose HDPE over steel for real combat though - that same elastic softness that will deaden blows more than steel means it will take cuts and wear out pretty fast if you don't wrap it in kevlar or something.
Bruh I thought it was just photo shop I didn't know it was an actual physical set of inspired medieval armor

Shad just dropped two back to back plot twists on us and we never saw it coming
I'm interested in this for many reasons, but the main reason at the moment is I'm trying to become a knight based content creator as well as a medieval fantasy book writer, and the armour helps with that sort of thing. Thank you Shad, you and your channel is a blessing.

@@averywhitaker3513 yeah, the eva one is kinda squeaky too (but not as much as the full "plate" one. That one is squeak hell).

So annoying when any youtuber repeats different versions of the name they are not sure about but not bothering to learn the name of your sponsor? Damn, I expected better.
The difference between the real Brigandine armour and the larp is the size of the metal studs and how far apart they are to each other. The real armour studs are bigger and closer then the larp armour. Although i didn't notice until you said it was fake at the beginning, truly amazing stuff!
The only “tell” for me was some lack of rigidity in the pauldron edges for the new brigandine. Looks great!

Once you pointed it out, I was able to spot a small difference in the two brigandine armors;, the faux brigandine pauldrons flex a little bit more, creating a divot where the arm straps are attached that isn't present in the steel version.

@@arcticdino1650 It was basically from the moment he first revealed he was wearing the fake brigandine I noticed it, particularly on his right pauldron.

@@rustedcake879 Yeah, I started to get suspicious around then too. But I didn't really know for sure until he pointed it out, and I was able to pick out that detail on the pauldron. It's close, but not perfect.
I was very much fooled by the Brigandine😂 Now when he wears brigandine, I’m just gonna constantly question whether he’s wearing the real one or not.
when you hear 200 orcs in metal comming. then it is the real one. when you hear nothing and think some assasis can kill you then it is the fake one
The real one's a tighter fit, it curves in a bit more under the arms and hips. Also I think the heads on the studs are a bit larger. That's all I got for telling it apart from the fake one. Now that I know to look for a fake, it's somewhat easier to tell.
The foam pauldrons are the real key. They don't have the curved edge in the front and are bigger (covering slightly more area) because they can flex. (And thus not becoming inhibiting despite the larger size.) The down side is that the foam or Dragon skin(love that, although usually when you fight them you look for the gap between the scales to penetrate the skin... but I trust Shad.) It still holds its bent form slightly, since it is not a rigid material like metal. I think its an issue, although still convincing to unsuspecting persons (me) despite its obviously odd look.
@@sthiel126 Yeah, noticed this too. Once you know to look for it, you can tell the fake from the real by the pauldrons flexing when he moves with the fake version.
Let's be honest:
They may be fake, but we all want one XD.
I'd rather just complain about it not being authentic enough until finally I have enough money saved to get one and then I'll just pretend like I was never serious about my criticisms.
I want one!!
Maybe if they made better looking models and didn't cost as much as functional and more authentic looking steel alternatives. That goes for both his steel and synthetic armour.
I have chronic fatigue too and I can't even imagine doing half the stuff you do for these videos, it's hard for me to even get out of bed for more than a couple hours a day, kind of an inspiration to see you overcome it for these videos you do. Imagine what the filmmakers can do with this kind of stuff.
We can have historical movies that actually look historical, and actors won't have to die from fatigue.
I think what they can do is keep metal sets of armors for the main actors in close up shots only, and give everyone fake armor in distance shots. This kind of thing happened in the original star wars, where most of the Stormtrooper was stunt armor and made from low quality milk carton plastic, while they made a few sets of "hero" armor that was a higher quality that Luke and Han wear as well as other Stormtroopers in close up shots.
@@MistahFox That's an option.
Another issue is that wearing props probably needs some training to imitate the weight properly.
I mean, Shad's not moving very much in this video, but when in combat attentive people will probably notice when an actor jumps as if he/she is wearing a pajama.
exactly the point i was going to make. this will drive the cost down aswell as increase demand for extras a lot more. we'll have large real battles in movies again not just cgi. and when it comes to cgi, they can still use it for the effects. in turn this will also drive the cost down since there'll be little to edit and be computer generated.
as for larp, it will be full of Sirs now and not just peasants. man, if only covid be gone now. it'll be amazing to be in medieval conventions. full of knight orders wearing these.

The velvet lays on the plate different than it does on the faux set. I can tell when he switches but only because the pauldrons give it away.

"the sham-iversity brigandine."
I gotta say, this gives me a lot of hope that I can eventually afford a set that I can wear rather than hopelessly browse websites with several-thousand-dollar pieces. Thank you for sharing this!
Yes absolutely was fooled, and this seems amazing for *most* situations where one would want to wear medieval armor of any kind. As you alluded to, to be "completely historically accurate" in a re-enactment, you'd have to live the re-enactment far more than just when you show up for the weekend, actually training like a medieval soldier, and who can do that? This opens up the enjoyment of *aesthetically* accurate armor to a much broader range of people in cost and more importantly physical capability.
Imagine if museum's can get this kind armour replicas to display and for people to be able to actually interact with...
SHAD: You see that dragon over there?
P O L Y U R E T H A N E!
At this point, every time there is a cut, I expect the brigandines to be switched.
OH MY GOD SOMEONE FINALLY PUT IT INTO WORDS!
The sound is what gives it away, at first I was like “oh, I guess shad finally found a place were his mike doesn’t pick up the clank of that bring” then you can hear a little clink on the green screen and I was like “did he switch back >.> “ but both the faux suits look great! I do wish the breastplate and placard were two separate pieces and the back plate had lames to match the front.
I thought the brigandine looked suspicious and I freaked out when I was right. It looked kinda like the shoulders weren't moving in the same way, but if you stand still and don't move at all I probably wouldn't have been able to tell. I think it also helps that it's a video about fake armour, making me immediately suspicious of any and all armour you were gonna show.
*We've been tricked, backstabbed and quite possibly bamboozled.*
I wanted to comment the same thing.
shotgun!
@@octomanuno2700 thank you.... so much

9:10 Shad: "How many of you were able to tell this is fake?"
me, watching on smartphone, with crappy internet, in 240p resolution: (o.O)
👌
I do realized, but even with hd it was mostly a deduction lol

Ha! Peasant, i'm watching on glorious 360p! Lol
I was not got...however, I am a medieval historical hobbyist. So - people wearing actual metal and leather armors are more commonplace. I immediately noted the flex of the faux shoulders. I thought it was just leather since this is the first video I've seen of yours. :) Bravo in the research and reproduction. I completely see the uses of faux armor - it's fun! I love your brigandine - both the faux and reproduction are lovely. Vivat!
"Shad is walking across the screen He is dressed in fabulous *studded* armor"
Imma run away now.
GRAB THE PITCH FORKS AND TORCHES, he said the forbidden words!
oh no, it's studded not because it's made of studs, but because it's currently *containing* one.
@@enricobaschenis4257 ...
- Drops pitchforks and begins clapping and cheering -
It is actually studded armor as there aren't any plates under there it is the "fake" one
As an amoursmith apprentice I'll admit these armors are hard to tell apart at times, this is well made
I'm dead ... I'm actually dead, he got me the first time and I was like oh, dang alright, then he did it again, and I died even harder. then he did it a third time and my mind exploded. Then he did it again, and my mind was sucked into a black hole.
I picked up on the change during the interjection because of the ever so faint difference in the color/shade (EDIT: The real one is darker) and the fact that the pauldrons/shoulders on the fake brigandine slightly bend/wrinkle. It's not by much though so I'd never fault someone for not seeing it.
And you only noticed it because you were already aware that Shad had a faux one.
@@ZNotFound no actually, the difference was very noticeable. I fixate rather heavily on both color and visual consistency. Shad's Brigandine was never that bright in any lighting it's ever been in. To suddenly be, not even subtly, brighter and the slight but noticeable wrinkling of the pauldrons were dead giveaways. You can believe me or not but I originally suspected the armor he was wearing was fake the more he talked about fake armors and how they might fool someone. The insistence on the repetition of that specific aspect made the twist a little too obvious in my opinion. I don't really see the point of you commenting this because from the outset it's conjecture because you cannot and will never know me or how I think and if you choose to believe I'm full of shit well I can't really say more than I already have but to be blunt it really doesn't matter either way.
@@ThatGuyOrby Okay man, my wording was wrong. You didn't have to write an essay.
