I've seen people display certain abilities sporadically to the point I'd say it's almost common, but I'm skeptical of most people that claim to have consistent abilities. If not for just the fact that they'd be able to get incredibly rich if they had even a fraction what they say they have.
I've heard them retort by saying they have no desire to be rich, but I think there are very few people that can honestly say that, and they're mostly in monasteries and caves and what not.

From my own experience it seems like the best you get is a sort of vague and fuzzy sense of something. It's not specific enough that you could, let's say, pick a winning lottery number.

@@HardcoreZen Not so much your claim, but I've heard occultists claim that magick is "probability manipulation".
Even if you couldn't manipulate something incredibly improbable like winning the lottery you could manipulate a game like baccarat that only has a 1% percent house edge so that you have the 1% edge, and eventually that 1% percent edge will become millions of dollars.
People have done this with regular ass math before, but somehow none of these self-proclaimed witches and law of attractors ever found out how to do it.

Thanks Brad. I actually think abilities like that are more common than we'd like to admit. It's just that our entire Western intellectual, rational tradition effectively hides them with questions & answers. We welcome superstition though, because it's useful for selling stuff.

This is a strange video to come across at this hour because I have been meaning to ask you this for a while(I almost joined your patreon page to ask about this horrific ability i.e. seeing other people) and also it has been a particularly draining day today relevant to this.
I think I might have been good at reading people since childhood as well. Could be It was innate or could be childhood trauma that drove me to understand people better. And that further drove me towards zen. However, I feel as I continue my on again off again zen practice this ability is sharpening as I am getting older.
Personally I not so sure that it's always horrible though. In some circumstances, the ability to read minds/see people for who they are can be 'useful' like running a business where people's motivations have to be aligned.
On the other hand, seeing people at a deeper level can be so satisfying yet so..... painful. Satisfying because often times people can be quite beautiful yet so unseen. And there is a connection there. But we are all so limited.....by just being a person or just being circumstances....it can be painful when the connection slips away.
Lately, it's crossing my mind that it may be wise to hide part of me so that people don't unnecessarily form attachment. It's always hard to let go of someone I feel I can see. But at least I can minimize suffering if the other person don't form attachment from being seen.
But as you said, it's kind of fuzzy, and not always accurate. Today I am wishing very deeply only if I could read minds with little bit more clarity. I just found out a friend of mine took his life last night. And I was the last person he met before he died. And I couldn't tell he was just going to take his life couple of hours later. So, now while it's horrible in some circumstances, I feel like I could have saved him if I could read minds a little better.

I understand your feelings about your friend. But I doubt your ability could have helped. If you're anything like me in that regard, anyway. It seems like I am blind to certain things. Often I don't foresee stuff that I feel like I should certainly have seen coming.
Other times the impressions that come are garbled. For example, all through the summer of 2001 I had an intense sense that something very big was about to happen. But I had no idea what. I couldn't tell if it was something personal or something societal. I just knew it was very big. I didn't tell anyone about this feeling because they just would have thought I was being weird. And besides, I didn't have any useful information.
I don't think we can save anyone who doesn't want to be saved. And karma is also very powerful. I feel like this ability is related to karma. Maybe we can sort of "see" karma. But I don't think we can change it.

@@HardcoreZen I get these feelings sometimes as well. Like you said, it can feel like something is about to happen that's important. Often times, something does happen in personal life or at socially at large. I might also get metaphorical dreams sometimes before something happens. Then again, this might be my own interpretation in hindsight. But these things tend to happen less when I am off zazen.

Yeah. I was thinking about the part where he stood on the Master's right side (or was it his left side?). This comes up a lot in old Buddhist writings, where a student stands on a specific side of his teacher.

Thats funny, I also had a weird psychic ability as a kid which was pretty mundane and not worth talking about. Nothing really came of it and its unrelated to why I got into buddhism myself, but I suppose it did lay a mental groundwork for me to sort of have this feeling of something greater or more abstract going on. like I "could" develop these abilities, but, it didnt really feel useful or important, it was just a dumb gimmick.

I always think of philosophy's 'the problem of other minds'--how do we know other minds exist at all, much less know what they're thinking? For me though, I think it can be somewhat reconciled by acknowledging that minds aren't things that people "have." No "my' mind or "their" mind. There's no mysterious entity or immaterial thingy out there called "the mind"--no different from the absence of a soul or spirit, there is no mind.

Hi Brad, psychic abilities (PK) are studied in parapsychology, a branch of psychology. They range from precognition (sensing the future), mind reading to remote viewing, to even stranger phenomena such as weather manipulation, materialization, apparitions ("ghosts"), etc.
Clinical psychologist Jeffrey Mishlove wrote a book called 'The PK Man' about Ted Owens, a man who supposedly had powerful PK that were witnessed by several people. Mishlove also has a popular YT channel, "New Thinking Allowed," in which he interviews many researchers on parapsychology.
There are very interesting phenomena documented in experiments such as the Scole Experiment and the Skinwalker Ranch investigations. These things are not compatible with a hard materialistic view of reality. Anyway, a healthy skepticism is always useful... Cheers!

It's interesting. But the only useful thing my abilities have ever done for me is that sometimes I know where to look for rare records. I'll just get an impression that I should go to a certain store, and there it is waiting for me! But now there aren't enough record stores for that to mean much anymore.
