I was watching this video while my wife shopped next to me on her phone, she is an electrical engineer, and when you got to your diagram she started yelling at the screen the correct terms and such n such. It was rather hilarious for me. She said you owe her for the eye cancer haha
I remember a few christmases ago. My dad and I are watching the game and my wife walks in the room with her hands about 6" apart and says "how big is this, like 12" ?" My dad, without missing a beat, says "I guess you taught her how to measure." True story, fuckin' hysterical.
There was a young plumber named Lee Who was plumbing his girl by the sea. She said, "Stop your plumbing, There's somebody coming" Said the plumber, still plumbing, "It's me."
Hand Tool Rescue - I want to taze the birds getting to my squirrel feeder. Or just throw the left-handed nut-f*cker at them! Stunned birds + hungry cats = no more pesky bird droppings on my car! (Oh yeah, and food for the fire 🐜) Handy schmoo with electrocity! 😎
Big Clive is a legend amongst men! I used to deliver stuff that he works with during big live shows (vague enough) shocked me when I saw him in his first viral video with a certain flamethrower doll. Nicest guy on the planet and is out there scienceing with joe public in meetups, deserves every follow he gets
And you know your watching your fair quota of AVE and Big Clive when even your girlfriend starts coming out with AVE quotes, Just the other day she told me the sandwich maker had stopped Chooching and maybe I should go wrangle some more pixies,,,,,,
I've had a couple of these for years, absolutely perfect for lighting firecrackers. Giving one of them so a guy who wants to light some sparklers has become a yearly tradition for me. Can't believe you didn't even try sticking something conductive in the arc
Yeah if you get the old school burn sticks, the metal sparklers. Dangerous as frig when they get hot and fall off on your hands. This wouldn’t do anything on the wood stick sparklers
Good thing you sharpened that brand new white pencil, only to immediately set it down and pick up an old pencil that had already been sharpened. Lololol.
I love that he takes the time to sharpen a pencil on camera and then tosses it aside for another already sharpened one. So subtly awesome! I'm definitely doing that next week to a co-worker that keeps asking to borrow my pencil.
AvE, please don't take this as mocking That's a stuffer for Clive's xmas stocking He has less reservation Than your self-preservation With results that are usually shocking
Nifty little device. When I saw you sharpening the pencil reminded me of an exciting experiment I did when I was young. Found a neon sign transformer and made a Jacobs ladder. Had great fun sticking different things in the arc, that is until I used a pencil. Next think I knew I was at the other side if the room, I was sitting in a wheeled office chair at the time. That is when I leaned graphite is conductive. Have taken high voltage seriously ever since.
Well I had to get on the old gargler with the jazz-hands routine and find out what she's for. Turns out the floppy dingus end is for sticking in jars, what for lighting candles. Who knew?
9:46 It helps to have a system for that. It may well be an (unwritten) "industry standard" thing, but input on the left, and output on the right makes most sense to me, when making (or lifting) schematics. In a similar manner, ground on the bottom and whatever supply voltages, on the top.
In my case, 5 minutes.. I just short-circuited this once (tested it on a metal cap, because of course I did) it stopped working and the battery started to heat up by itself, would not recommend...
Or cold use a really cheap cable that just has power but no data transfer. How do you think they would store malware on this kind of device without any ram/rom to speak of?
I love that inflammable and flammable means the same thing. I don’t think it is legal to mark a product as inflammable anymore due to people thinking it means inflammable.
LOL. 'Why does the white gas for my camp stove say it's inflammable? that's odd... I must have bought the wrong thing. Oh well, I'll just pour it out on my campfire, make sure it's good and out.'
Exact same Sony clock radio I bought 8 years ago. Adjusts automatically for DST, has I think a 9-volt battery to keep time during power failures. Gains a few seconds a month: crystal vibrates a bit too fast?
I've got a very basic Sanyo crapper (no DST adjust) that used to gain about 5 minutes every week or two, I'd have to re-set it all the time because it'd gotten too far ahead (like half an hour or more). Was like that for about 10 years, then suddenly it stopped gaining time - haven't had to adjust it for the last couple of years. Maybe the backup battery is dead, haven't looked at that - I just enjoy not having to guess how far ahead it is when I'm still half asleep and the alarms going off.
just to eleborate for those that don't know what AvE was saying, the 2 coils are basically a transformer, but you cant transform dc because it needs an EMF that builds and collapses to induce a voltage on the other winding. so an IGBT is used to simulate the effect of a sine wave, by turning on and off at varying rates, we call this an inverter, taking dc, and faking ac. the reason the voltage goes up, and the current goes down, is because the power must stay the same, and Power = Voltage * Current (apparent power), and the amount of that change is controlled by the ratio of windings, for example 2:1 would be 24 and 12 windings. this one will be a very high ratio, like 1000:1 or more.
Wouldn't the mosfet be on the ground side of the circuit so the magnetic field can build before the circuit is closed? Similar to how the ignition coils in a car work.
When I first discovered the voltage doubler circuit I built an 8 stage one on a custom made circuit board & everything. Ran AC into it and one of the caps blew up loudly shooting the foil right into my cheek. LOL!
it denotes part 15 compliance, basically it means that if it is interfering with transmissions (knowing or otherwise) you can be told to knock it off and then compelled to comply
FYI UB: it doesn't need to be powered by an AC source to be a voltage booster. The brain box can simply switch the DC supply and feed that into the diode voltage doubler. That's how DC-DC boost converters work, too.
The pocket version has sliding electrodes with a wider gap that's perfect for top of the ear shots when there's just no room at the bar at call for last orders. The battery capacity is practically 1/5th of the flexible neck model but that's plenty enough to cause some trouble as it happens.
So, what you are saying is that it's a fire starting stun gun? Also, if we follow your schematic, the product won't work. By your left index finger @ 10:16, there is a break in the secondary coil. Which would render the coil inoperative. 😉
lmao Avecad, that's the craziest electrical schematic Ive seen since i tried to reverse engineer a circuit! very entertaining content with a good reference to for anyone who wants to know how it really works.. plasma arc igniters are pretty neat toys/tools.
This whole situation that runs to the spark gap reminds me of what's in a digital camera to make that camera flash it has a Transformer that spikes the voltage really high to make that flash it's almost the same setup but it's to make a spark gap
That coil has me thinking I could use that for my 1/4 scale Offy that I'm building. It'd go perfect in my magneto housing as I can't actually build a 1/4 scale working magneto. It's compact enough to fit and put out 20,000 volts or so to the spark plugs.
AvE, can you do some kind of testing on the frequency coming out of the MOSFET, the input and output current and voltage from the transformer, etc.? It would be really interesting to see the parameters they chose to make the circuit work so well for so cheap.
I'm just drooling over the adjustable wrench with the built in fine tuning appendage...I know it is probably not a new tool, but someone finally gets it.
watched Louis rossmann fixing his e-bike, they mentioned AVE, then remembered that havent seen aves videos for a while. 😀👍 keep doin stuff, that keeps people inspired fixing their stuff. 👍
I've had a couple of the pocket versions over the years. Pretty friggin handy in windy weather or trying to light up with the windows cracked, going down the road. The RF interference is interesting for sure.
I do watch bigclive, but overall enjoy the dynamics of your presentations so much more. You test stuff that I want and tell me if I'm mistaken. bigclive only presents things I'm curious about to warn me. You've a special character which is inescapable. Oh and you make mms laugh like a drain.
For years, I've had transformers backwards! I thought a step-up had lots of turns on the primary, few on the secondary. When AvE described it the reverse way, I had to look it up. OK, he has it right. Where did I get the backwards idea? As a software guy, I guess I can just say it's a hardware problem and ignore it.
the electric arc choocher! I've been contemplating picking up one of these. no surprise that its a lithium ion onto a charge/control circuit, and transformer as the voltage doubler just ain't gonna create an army of angry pixies of that particular size. that being said, that transformer must have some crazy amount of windings on the secondary.
Harbor freight just got a new style 1/2 Earthquake XT impact gun with a black head on not the gray one like you did take apart already. Could you get one and see if there is any differences in the new one and old one
The noise appearing on the (AM) radio suggests the operation is at considerably higher frequency than 20 kHz. At least the harmonics must go over 500 kHz. Also, I would expect it to use a resonating capacitor, either in series or in parallel with the primary. Anyway, where could I buy one? I could check the frequency and probably work out a basic schematic. I could characterize the transformer as well.
I was researching these circuits this week for a capacitive discharge ignition system, weird timing! I think you explained it pretty well, considering!
I got something like this but In a zippo like package and the arcs must be on different phases because there are 2 arcs that make an x rather than parallel lines.
So, I've been meaning to buy one of these just to see if they could be a quick legalish taser. Just solder on some new leads and see if you're drunk buddy will give it a ride.
Gerald Gepes yeah the hold my beer buddy, or the I'm ok buddy. I was fortunate enough to have both kinds of buddies let's not forget the buddy who can fall over and not spill his beer buddy
Raymond Mucklow we would get shitty on a sledding run, had one buddy roll his sled halfway down the hill, rolled three times and still had his beer intact. The best types of buddy.
Gerald Gepes my brother brought out his new to him sandrail on my 19th birthday, I had a mickeys 22 hornet in hand we took off across the desert we hit a wash out flipped in the air landed on the right side tires to then land on all 4 when it was all over I looked down I had my thumb in the top di dnt spill a drop. My brother (with it still running ) hit the gas we took off. Awesome.
9:11 did you fail at changing pencils and change to a orange 1 and do i notice a pencil you've been playing with the arc lighter on and burnt a big chunk out of it?!
I think the IC is a 555 timer with the output set to square wave, I only guess this because this is the exact same as my college project that i wasn`t allowed to build.
Sharpens pencil, tosses it aside and grabs an already sharpened pencil. I love this channel.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That's great, LMAO
I dont like things often, but when i do its stuff like this.
There was a young plumber named Lee
Who was plumbing his girl by the sea.
She said, "Stop your plumbing,
There's somebody coming"
Said the plumber, still plumbing, "It's me."
Beautiful
Aaaaannnndd demonizied
There was a young man from Boston
Who bought himself an Austin
There was room for his ass
And a gallon of gas
But his balls hung out
And he lost 'em
There was an old man from China,
Who wasn't a very good climber,
He slipped on a rock,
And broke his cock.
And now he's got a vagina!!
You i
I can finally quickly and discretely taze the squirrels getting to my bird feeder.
Or blow their legs off.
I would pay good money to see tree-rats doing the electric breakdancing!
LOLZ! !:^)
you wish you were able to do that with this.
Nothing safer then a Chinese made, pocket sized taser that can start fires.
George & Sue lol. It's just a Samsung phone without a screen
JonnyRocketfuel i seriously spit out my drink Hahahaha well done “ slow clap” 👏
if i end up with a damn coffee filter advert ......
Big Clive is a legend amongst men! I used to deliver stuff that he works with during big live shows (vague enough) shocked me when I saw him in his first viral video with a certain flamethrower doll.

"I see," said the blind man as he peed into the wind. "It's all coming back to me now."
"long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs" is the quote of the day.
I swear to God I learned that phrase from the old x men cartoons and rogue.
I've had a couple of these for years, absolutely perfect for lighting firecrackers.
Giving one of them so a guy who wants to light some sparklers has become a yearly tradition for me. Can't believe you didn't even try sticking something conductive in the arc

9"? I would have rounded up to 10". Measure twice. Lie forever.
What’s the conversion to centimeters she said
Looks like 3 inches, smells like a foot
Our measurements go up to 11
I round down. Gives them something to take home and reheat later.
‘It’s in!’ she said.... ‘now walk towards me’.
Eye cancer? I'm more concerned about visual AIDS.
Good thing you sharpened that brand new white pencil, only to immediately set it down and pick up an old pencil that had already been sharpened. Lololol.
He was talking about doing mindless things while he was thinking.
....he already did off camera i think
Pencil? That's the emergency phone charger.
I love that he takes the time to sharpen a pencil on camera and then tosses it aside for another already sharpened one. So subtly awesome! I'm definitely doing that next week to a co-worker that keeps asking to borrow my pencil.
AvE, please don't take this as mocking
That's a stuffer for Clive's xmas stocking
He has less reservation
Than your self-preservation
With results that are usually shocking
Bravo! (apologies for my tardiness)
A vidya in which Big Clive is referred to as a "Big, beautiful boy". It was a special moment.
The only improvement would have been had he included "hairy" in there as well!
As an electrical engineer, I always have a good chuckle at the down-and-dirty schematics. Very utilitarian!
Nifty little device. When I saw you sharpening the pencil reminded me of an exciting experiment I did when I was young. Found a neon sign transformer and made a Jacobs ladder. 10:40 Nothing more refreshing than a warm glass of 100ml of current (juice?)
100ml of currant juice
It's how I measure the flow of angry pixies...what are you guys using?
pmgodfrey Hogshead per hectare, traditionally
You can tell by his hesitation he did that specifically so someone would call him out on it. He threw you a bone and you ate it right up!
Not only is it flammable but it's inflammable!!
boozum 1 x
Ain’t English odd
boozum 1
It’s a conflagration!

"My better 3/4" He knows who's running the home! ;)
with almost any kind of lighter, it comes down to longevity in my experience. please tell us how long it takes until she chooches he last.
stereomike111 about as long as the battery’s entire life until it can’t hold enough charge to create arcs
I had one of these things, lasted about three or four months before the electrodes just didn't work anymore
In my case, 5 minutes.. I just short-circuited this once (tested it on a metal cap, because of course I did) it stopped working and the battery started to heat up by itself, would not recommend...
My 2 favorite channels, AvE and BigClive. You do all the tool and industrial reverse engineering and Clive does all the electronic gadgets.
There are a LOT of ways to implant malware through your USB port. Don't plug crap into your PC, use a charger.
Or cold use a really cheap cable that just has power but no data transfer. How do you think they would store malware on this kind of device without any ram/rom to speak of?
"I see said the blind man who picked up his hammer and saw" ain't heard that one in friggin ages me dad used to say that all the time
I love that inflammable and flammable means the same thing. I don’t think it is legal to mark a product as inflammable anymore due to people thinking it means inflammable.

It is just natural selection
Sharpens pencil to pick up one already sharpened. This is the shit my grandfather would do, god I love this channel.

Respect for the shout out for big clive.
He tear downs like the best of them.
It's funny you endorsed Big Clive...I started watching your channel based from Big Clive's endorsement of you !! I thoroughly enjoy BOTH channels !!
I love these veejoes. I have absolutely no idea what you're on about most of the time, but you make me laugh.

"not only is it flammable, it's also inflammable" hilarious as always. Someone should make you a stand up comedian or something
I've been watching big Clive for a while. Skilled person, great videos.
Finally a BOLTR of something I own lol. Love this thing. Great for fireworks.
Really enjoyed. One of your most fun vijeos!
I liked the sonic screwdriver

Maybe the FCC certification is for use as an electronic jammer? 🤔
it denotes part 15 compliance, basically it means that if it is interfering with transmissions (knowing or otherwise) you can be told to knock it off and then compelled to comply
FCC - Frivolous Chinesium Crappola

Big Clivedotcom is awesome!
Especially his beard.
Funnier yet how he'll keep eating a fermented 1000 year old egg but a little hot sauce just shuts him down.
I love this guys humor!

One of those would make a very discreet mini-taser for use in crowded supermarkets.

AvE and big Clive 😊 two of my favourite most edifying people on RUclips.. True legends on knowledge
Both have superseded late night TV
"There's a joke in there somewhere..
Involving your mother, and me..."
Impeccable timing.

It would be really interesting to see the parameters they chose to make the circuit work so well for so cheap.
so this essentially replaces the piezo crank of an ordinary stove lighter with a battery?
I'm just drooling over the adjustable wrench with the built in fine tuning appendage...I know it is probably not a new tool, but someone finally gets it.
not gonna lie, my eyeballs always cross when you get to the angry pixies. but I always watch for the limericks.
I have finally ordered one of your stickers, cant wait to see how it looks
watched Louis rossmann fixing his e-bike, they mentioned AVE, then remembered that havent seen aves videos for a while. 😀👍 keep doin stuff, that keeps people inspired fixing their stuff. 👍

It was Big Clive which sent me over here. I'm so glad that he doodly did
For years, I've had transformers backwards! I thought a step-up had lots of turns on the primary, few on the secondary. When AvE described it the reverse way, I had to look it up. OK, he has it right. Where did I get the backwards idea? As a software guy, I guess I can just say it's a hardware problem and ignore it.
Big Clive, such a smart friendly bear...
I saw Thomas Kim use a voltage multiplier (the one you’re talking about) and turn an electric fly swatter into a taser.
Can you use your magnetic magic paper on it to 'see' the coils?
Chris: the mining engineer who also does stand up comedy.
I wonder if Dave knows there's an AvE fork to DaveCad?
Micah Elizabeth Scott published the source code recently. github.com/scanlime/davecad
ive heared davecad was recently reverse engeniered
Glad to hear you like Big Clive.....he’s always flaunting danger......👍👍👍
Nice Bradken sticker My uncle has worked at a Bradken steel foundry in Kansas for years
the electric arc choocher! I've been contemplating picking up one of these.
no surprise that its a lithium ion onto a charge/control circuit, and transformer as the voltage doubler just ain't gonna create an army of angry pixies of that particular size. that being said, that transformer must have some crazy amount of windings on the secondary.
....I suffer from that medical condition all the time!!! Love your channel my friend.
Can you explain what the hell the deal was when you put it next to the radio and the radio chooched louder
So how do you light a slash pile or shrink some polyolefin tubing with this thing? Looks like it'd be more useful as a cattle prod.
Harbor freight just got a new style 1/2 Earthquake XT impact gun with a black head on not the gray one like you did take apart already. Could you get one and see if there is any differences in the new one and old one

NiHaoMike -. Yeah, Harmonics.
That was the most beautiful schematic I've ever seen... and I'm an electrician.
I was researching these circuits this week for a capacitive discharge ignition system, weird timing! I think you explained it pretty well, considering!
Totally worth the eye-cancer speaking as an electrical engineer. I forking love you doing pixie stuff man.
It's nice to hear you being nice to other youtubers. ;-)
Thank you for making my morning brighter!
This thing dont hurt as much as I first though it would. Really fun gadget.
Could you build a plug in heavy duty version of this!!!
Are you using one of those adjustable arms with spring ballast to hold the camera? I swear I can hear some spring noise coupled into the camera mic.
I got something like this but In a zippo like package and the arcs must be on different phases because there are 2 arcs that make an x rather than parallel lines.
"Inner fire bug" about spit out my caramel colored chilled sugar beverage
I MUST get me one of those. I'll work out what I am going to do with it once it arrives.
How does one go about getting stickers from the really cool companies?
So, I've been meaning to buy one of these just to see if they could be a quick legalish taser. Just solder on some new leads and see if you're drunk buddy will give it a ride.

wrong output frequency and waveform.
erik - these two or the tazer? : )
"too busy to laugh at my own jokes " and this is why we love you :D
The internals can be bought as a complete set/module on eBay ...
Zippo style lighters with four poles that make nice X shaped arcs can be had for less than 10 bucks these days...
Do you think you could get three car batteries to TIG weld?
9:11 did you fail at changing pencils and change to a orange 1 and do i notice a pencil you've been playing with the arc lighter on and burnt a big chunk out of it?!
Big Clive is great. Could that potted thing be a multiplier rather than a transformer?
That "dream machine" brings back memories
I think the IC is a 555 timer with the output set to square wave, I only guess this because this is the exact same as my college project that i wasn`t allowed to build.
jesus . what proff do I need to "have a chat" with. Sounds lame!
Did it arc through the dialectric or over the surface? As soon as there is a hint of carbon char itl conduct.
