Hey Jason, Joe, and Kramzer -- maybe the sentimentality isn't necessary/wanted, but I really want to thank you guys immensely for you guy's commitment and energy towards this series. I started watching AOTY maybe around '96, and since then it's been the first thing I'd turn on when I got off work on Fridays. Your guy's passion has really helped breath some life back into me after months of COVID fatigue, and though it sucked for so long, I'm coming out of it hundreds of albums deeper than when I started. An incredible ride, and I'm thrilled to see what will be coming next for the channel!
Thank you, Jeremy. That means a lot! - Joe

Congrats on a job well done gentlemen. It's been quite a ride.
When did you first come on board the series, Rich? My first comment was on the 1983 video. I plan on going back and (eventually) posting a list for every year I missed up until '83.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I didn't find this until the early 00s, but I also may go back and make a list for the other years.
@@edgustafson Right on! It will be nice not having a deadline every Friday. I'll be able to go a little deeper into each year.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I came on board around when you did. I went back through every year and did a top 5 pretty quickly. I think you can tell when I showed up when my lists started getting really long.
These guys were recommended to me by the RUclips algorithm when they were doing the mid-80s. First video I watched earned a sub. Like you, Whammy Bard, I need to back to all the older videos--cuz hey, they’ll be new to me lol. I don’t know that I’ll do anything before 1975, though, the year of my birth….

@@threestringsomg Did you hear they have a new album,"Motorheart," coming in Oct?
@@independenceltd. no I didn't! 🤯🤘Though this year there is also new Ghost....I bet loads of bands produced more work during lockdown....I expect new albums quicker than usual from many.....
I've watched through this whole series in the last week, and it was fun to see! I've added some albums to listen to later, as I'm starting with a few 50s albums and going chronologically from year to year. I don't wanna see no candles bro. Only top notch music analysis for ever!
I am sad to see this end, have been looking forward to it every Saturday morning and as well as being entertaining it has introduced me to some good music which I would have otherwise missed.
Don’t worry. We have another show starting up in a week or two that I think will fill your Saturday morning needs. -Jason
Gentleman, I wanted to thank you for the work you put into this series. I started watching your channel to pass the time during the isolation of the pandemic and grew to greatly enjoy it, looking forward to the yearly wrap-ups every Friday. Though I fully confess I haven’t heard of about 90% of the albums in your lists of the past ten years, I enjoyed watching nonetheless for your enthusiasm, and great reviews. Bravo
This is a sad day. I finally started watching these in the 80s, caught up, and eventually researched throughout the week to try to blast my list as one of the first. Luckily I can still do it for the artists. Can’t wait for what’s next.
Been a great ride guys! Thanks - you've introduced me to many great albums/artists that had gone unnoticed by me. Looking forward to what you're planning next!
Great Job guys! Not just entertaining, but a valuable service for all of us who love music to get a chance to get introduced to new things. All 3 of you, especially Jason, introduced me to stuff that escaped my radar at the time(Sloan,Jellyfish,Dawes). The commentors are great as well, especially Roxanne Walsh, who introduced me to Terry Allen,Joe Ely and The Walkabouts(I can't stop listening to New West Motel). Love the channel, and am looking forward to the next series!
Titanic Rising has a fantastic album cover.

Yanks 5
Lana Del Rey - NFR
Bon Iver - I,I
Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
M Lambert - Wildcard
B Howard - Jaime
I really liked the self titled Purple Mountains (probably my favorite so far), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen and Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising from this year quite a bit.
Great series overall. I’m not quite as sad to see it end as some others, but that’s only due to my insecurity over not knowing a huge amount of 2010’s albums, and being disappointed enough with several of the more acclaimed albums I did hear that I’m a bit skeptical about any talk that this was a great decade. The bulk of the series was quite entertaining though, and the discussions both in the videos and comment sections really made my Fridays better. I want to particularly thank you guys for all nominating The Pursuit of Happiness debut in 1988 which encouraged me to check it out, and I’m really glad I did. I’m feeling like it’s definitely up there among my favorites from that year.
Congratulations on this awesome ride. Looking forward to seeing what's next.

Thanks for the series guys. I think I'd only just discovered the channel about the time you started these and started playing catch-up from 1965 a little while later. I think I've been up to date since about the early '90s. Am tempted to try and work out some number 1 picks for years before 1980.

3. Rival Sons - Feral Roots
2. Dream Theater - Distance Over Time
1. The Darkness - Easter Is Cancelled
Darkness!!!🤘🤘🤘great album. Those critics can suck my.....ok I'm not gonna do a Justin here but....yeah🤣
@@threestringsomg It is a great one! Maybe their best together with Permission to Land.
I've noticed that some rockers doesn't get/like the comedy aspect but after all decades of rock n' roll with everything else already said I think comedy is a quite obvious next step.
I personally much rather have attitude and comedy than some bland lyrics that can be found in 250 other songs already!
@@JohannesYtterstrom agreed....I don't think their song writing should be overlooked either....they keep surprising me with great albums these days after the relative blip that was Pinewood Smile....but their humour and self defacing side is what makes them who they are in the end🤘👍
I had no idea The Darkness had an album called Easter is Cancelled but the title is hilarious and now I have to hear it.

Another great show, making me aware of artists I’ve not heard. Anyway I thought 2019 was a really good year with some great come backs. My top 5 are:
1. Jimmy Barnes - My Criminal Record
2. Alter Bridge - Walk the Sky
3. New Roses - Nothing But Wild
4. Jimmy Eat World - Surviving
5. Brantley Gilbert - Fire & Brimstone
Highly commended:
Volbeat - Rewind, Replay, Rebound.
The Circle - Space Between
I like Volbeat, but I thought that one wasn’t nearly as good as Seal the Deal. - Joe
And the circle closes...Just as I post my winners of 2019, I recognized that my #1 and my #2 released their debuts in 1965, the year we started this journey (My Generation, The Angry Young Them). They released 4,5 star albums then and did again in this year (no 5 stars today) but both did much better in the years between.
HM - Allman Betts Band - Down to the River, Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul - Summer of Sorcery, black midi - Schlagenheim, Hawkwind - All Aboard the Skylark, Lee Scratch Perry - Rainford
5. Sleater-Kinney - The Center Won't Hold (S-K never stood still and always pushed the limits of their music and this one is bolder than ever. The "new" is all about St. Vincent's production since the songs, guitars, emotions and topics are great as usual with the band. The production stands slightly in the way to their usual directness but then again I think that an album that makes one deal with such considerations over and over must be a great one, otherwise I would long have put it aside.)
4. Bob Mould - Sunshine Rock (Bob Mould happy sounds like a dangerous thing since his energy and music was always driven by his anger. However, it works well - thanks to his magnificent rhythm team and his craft for songwriting and arranging. Yes, there is sunshine but most of all there is R-O-C-K.)
3. Tedeschi Trucks Band - Signs (Losses or break ups often are responsible for the greatest albums. Here it is the deaths of a number of close friends and family members - Derek Trucks, Leon Russell, Gregg Allman and more - that lie at the heart of the songs which are the best they have written so far. Susan Tedeschi's voice is even better than ever before and the tunes are shorter, sharper and more focused but still allow them to show their musical abilities. The tribute to their late mentor Col. Bruce Hampton that closes the album shows how great they have become by now.)
2. Van Morrison - Three Chords and the Truth (Glad he returned to his own songwriting once more instead of his recent cover albums where he tried to prove that his own songs could sound just like his idols - which nobody doubted since 50 years. The new tracks are loaded with emotion and he still has that magnificent voice to bring them across. Yes, he has done albums like this before...it were his good albums and sometimes his great ones. I never say no to a good Van Morrison album.)
1. Who - Who (The Who have written rock history with just 12 albums in 55 years. It was always quality over quantity and no wonder that this one is their best effort since Who By Number 1975. The chemistry of Daltrey being Townshend's voice works better than ever and even if it is just the two of them now, this is a typical Who album. Long Live Rock, glad they did not die before they got old.)
The remaining 4 star albums of 2019
11. Jan Akkerman - Close Beauty
12. Chuck Cleaver - Send Aid
13. Geraint Watkins - Rush of Blood
14. Bruce Springsteen - Western Stars
15. Wreckless Eric - Transience
16. Here Lies Man - No Ground to Walk Upon
17. Grace Potter - Daylight
18. Mekons - Deserted
19. Robin Trower - Coming Closer to the Day
Did you enjoy the second 'black midi' album as well?
@@Sir_Eyeball Not as much. My impression is that they added even more styles/influences into their strange brew but it gets partly cluttered (sounds strange in this context?) by this. As wild as the debut is, it all makes sense. That "lounge pop" what-ever on the second one does not fit. Maybe it requires more listening, it just came out a few days ago and I only played it twice until now. Maybe it grows a bit, my gut feeling is, that it may not...
@@roxannewalsh Yeah I also think that the second album is a step down. It feels more straight (?) (I don't know if this is the right word haha). What made the debut better was the unbridled wildness, that is lost a bit on 'Cavalcade'. Still a good album imo.
@@roxannewalsh
▪︎Rush Of Blood -Geraint Watkins... all the songs are pretty good and I like how he jumps around from style to style.
▪︎Coming Closer To The Day -Robin Trower... I always enjoy hearing him play.
Thanks, Roxanne! I appreciate all the effort you've spent finding good albums. Pilfering your lists has saved me years of searching for stuff on my own. Cheers!
My Favorite Five, of 2019:
1. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
2. Lana Del Ray - Norman Fucking Rockwell!
3. Mountain Goats - In League with Dragons
4. Miniature Tigers - Vampires in the Daylight
5. Billie Eilish - When we all Fall Asleep, Where do we Go?
Purple Mountains is a fantastic album. All My Happiness Is Gone is easily my favorite song of 2019.
@@josejones love David Berman, waited 11 years for this album and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest.. such a sad loss, the world lost one of its greatest lyricists easily of the past three decades R.I.P.
@@tomklenskjr.2491 Agreed.
That Robert Ellis record is great. Quite a few albums we all connect with in this year. Kram nailed it with SVE. My list will be in Shannon’s comment as I’ve been doing since catching up on this series. Well done, gents. 👍🏻
5 Fine Line - Harry Styles
4 Norman Fucking Rockwell! - Lana Del Rey
3 Anima - Thom Yorke
2 Igor - Tyler, The Creator
1 Fear Inoculum - TOOL
Great call on Titanic Rising! I discovered that album via another channel (Deep Cuts) and absolutely love it. Didn’t realize the Lemon Twig brothers had a hand in it, but makes total sense...There are a few vocal phrasings in Andromeda that sound almost identical to the Twigs song Live In Favor of Tomorrow.

1. GUIDED BY VOICES - Zeppelin Over China
2. GUIDED BY VOICES - Warp And Woof
3. GUIDED BY VOICES - Sweating The Plague
I look forward to your Guided By Voices list, soon.
This has been a Public Service Announcement. God speed.
Fittingly, my final list in this series is dominated by veteran rock and blues/rock artists, with my favourite album of 2019 being from another band who have helped to keep the flame of classic rock music burning:
1. Feral Roots - Rival Sons
2. Let’s Rock - The Black Keys
3. WHO - The Who
4. Survivor Blues - Walter Trout
5. Distance Over Time - Dream Theater
Thank you so much guys for such a wonderful series. Like some others have already said, I would now like to go back and add my list of favourites to all the years before I started contributing (1991), which should keep me busy for a while.
I can’t wait to see what you will be doing next! 👍
This is the second time I've seen someone mention "WHO". Guess I'm gonna have to check that out.

Looking forward to what comes next 👍
For 2019 I’ll go for
“Purple Mountains” by Purple Mountains, which is basically a David Berman solo record.

Another Dream Syndicate sighting? 2nd one in the comments today. One of my alltime favorites. Nice to see them getting some love.
@@burmajones803 Great band that has never had the success and recognition they deserve. Every album they've released is a gem and of course their second studio album: Medicine Show was produced by somebody I hold in great esteem, Sandy Pearlman. He played a major role in the career and development of my favourite band, BOC.
@@jesuschambers I agree. These Times is actually my least favorite album by them--but they don't have a bad album. Medicine Show is a sneaky good record that got a bad rap because it didn't copy the formula from their first album. Pearlman also produced Give 'em Enough Rope by the Clash. Elliott Mazer, who produced a little Neil Young and Crazy Horse, also produced Dream Syndicate's 4th album.

I know “EPs” are generally not scored here, but my “Album of the Year” for 2019 would have been Radical Face’s “Therapy.” It’s over 20 minutes and has 6 great songs, once again delving into the mind of Ben Cooper. However, since it’s not a full album, I’ll give AotY to Coldplay’s “Everyday Life”. I wasn’t blown away by it at first, but it has definitely grown on me. It’s their fourth win.
Honorable mentions are Wilco’s “Ode to Joy,” American Football’s “American Football LP, “ Black Midi “Schalgenheim,” The National’s “I am Easy to Find” and Vampire Weekend’s “father of the Bride”.

Slipknot: We Are Not Your Kind
Caroline Polachek: Pang
Saor: Forgotten Paths
Boduf Songs: Abyss Versions
Wow, didn't think I'd see someone else mentionend Caroline Polachek.
I was thinking the same thing as Sir EYeball when I saw the Saor entry. Nice!!
By the way, listened to Kevin Morby's "Oh My God", after Jason spoke so positive about it. I think I am more with Kramzer on the rating of the album, but there are definitely some excellent songs on the album. "Hail Mary" in particular is a really good song. Good pick, Jason.
I enjoyed Social Cues - Cage the Elephant. 4/5.

Any chance one day you'll attempt albums of the year for the first half of the 60s? I know things really took off around '65 but there are still some landmark records before that, especially in jazz.
Great work on the series, guys! Been enjoying binging these the past few weeks.
Great series, guys. I recently binged it from the beginning, and discovered a ton of albums I’ve never heard before. Thanks! As for my 2019, here are a few of my favorites…
Bon Iver - i,i
Craig Finn - I Need a New War
Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
Fruit Bats - Gold Past Life
Temples - Hot Motion
Wilco - Ode to Joy
Also, now that it's been mentioned should be we expecting a Shovel Knight top ten from Joe? 😁
I'm with Kramzer on this one.
1. Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow. Very cool vibe -- heavily synth driven, but has a dark, almost goth vibe at times. "Seventeen" is great and probably one of my favorite tracks of the decade.
2. Better Oblivion Community Center - S/T. Phoebe Bridgers and Connor Oberst sound excellent together. Love all the baritone guitar, which brings a cool sound to the album. "Dylan Thomas" is also among my favorite tracks of the decade.
3. Duff McKagan - Tenderness. Against all odds, the bassist from Guns N' Roses got together with Shooter Jennings and made an album of socially conscious Americana songs. It sounds weird, but it's surprisingly great.
4. The Hold Steady - Thrashing Thru the Passion. Kind of lost interest in the Hold Steady after Stay Positive, but this is definitely their strongest album since then (not counting ODP from this year). Keyboardist Franz Nicolay rejoined the band after a long absence. "T-Shirt Tux" is one of the years best songs, and possibly the greatest song title of all time.
5. Big Thief - Two Hands. They released two albums this year, and this one I like a bit more. Like Guns N' Roses and Bruce Springsteen before them, they probably could've made one really awesome album. "Not" is a really killer tune. I always wish they would rock out more as I love their more uptempo songs.
I agree regarding "Seventeen." I had to listen to that song a few times before I understood it. When I did, wow.
After three very good years, I feel the decade ended on a bit of a downer. 2019 had a number of 'good' records and borderline 'very good' records, but only on really excellent one to me.
Anyway, these are my picks:
5:The Dream Syndicate - These Times
4: Chelsea Wolfe - Birth Of Violence
3: Lana Del Ray - Norman Fucking Rockwell
2: Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
1: Opeth - In Cauda Venenum (Truly excellent - just gets better every time I hear it)
Honorable mentions:
Nick Cave - Ghosteen, Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow, Tool - Fear Inoculum, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes - End Of Suffering, Inter Arma - Sulphur English.
A real legacy artist list for me this year. Everyone in top 5 has topped a year previously.
5. Beneath The Eyrie by Pixies
4. Hyperspace by Beck
3. Planet England by Robyn Hitchcock and Andy Partridge
2. Colorado by Neil Young
1. Rammstein self titled (3rd nomination)
🏆Remind Me Tomorrow -Sharon Van Etten (this album keeps haunting me long after it stops playing)
RUNNERS-UP:
▪︎Crushing -Julia Jacklin (emotionally gripping album with gorgeous melodies)
▪︎Kiwanuka -Michael Kiwanuka (this guy has such an interesting style... I can only call it futuristic folk-soul)
▪︎Purple Mountains (s/t) (lyrically this album is a hoot)
▪︎Trust The Life Force Of The Deep Mystery -The Comet is Coming (who knew industrial prog-jazz was a thing? I love it)
JUST MISSED THE CUT:
▪︎U.F.O.F. -Big Thief
▪︎Designer -Aldous Harding
▪︎Titanic Rising -Weyes Blood
▪︎Fishing For Fishies -King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
▪︎Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared? -Deerhunter
▪︎Wasteland, Baby! -Hozier
LIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
▪︎Live At Woodstock -Creedence Clearwater Revival
Shoutouts to Foals, Raconteurs, Brittany Howard, Coldplay, Flaming Lips, Big Thief, Jessica Pratt, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Who, The Black Keys, and The National.
I thought 2019 was strong at the very top- any of my first 3 albums (Van Etten/Jacklin/Kiwanuka) could've been my winner. But depth-wise I thought the year was below average.
Coldplay lost me after 'Ghost Stories'. But I like your 'Hozier' mention.
Maybe I should promote The Comet is Coming to 4 stars as well - it is great entertainment after all. It has all the right elements, Sun Ra, Can, Tony Allen and when Hawkwind joins on the third track what can I complain about? I think that sometimes it just is too obvious and misses the surprise element that the sources always had. But I like it.
1.The Mekons-Deserted 2.Lankum-The Livelong Day 3.Purple Mountains-S/T ( The 2019 deaths of David Berman and Kim Shattuck, of The Muffs, both shook me up) 4.Richard Dawson-2020 5.Mdou Moctar-Ilana The Creator (Also one of the best shows I'd seen that year) 6.Barrence Whitfield-Songs From The Sun Ra Cosmos 7.Cate Le Bon-Reward 8.Nick Cave-Ghosteen 9.Jamie Branch-Flay Or Die II-Bird Dogs Of Paradise 10.BCUC-The Healing 11.Swans-Leaving Meaning 12.The Art Ensemble Of Chicago-We Are On The Ledge 13. Shana Falana-Darkest Light 14.Guaxe-S/T 15.Dream Syndicate-These Times 16.Gotobeds-Debt Begins At 30 17. The Muffs-No Holiday 18.Marissa Nadler & Stephen Brodsky-Droneflower 19.The Boogarins-Sombrou Dúvida 20.Wreckless Eric-Transience
Mekons have appeared a number of times on my lists here through the year - Deserted is in my top 20 this year as well, still good even if not my preferred Mekons album. We also share Wreckless Eric - his later years albums have all made it onto my lists - yes, I also liked his Stiff albums decades ago.
Good to see the Dream Syndicate make a list. One of my alltime favorite bands.
@@roxannewalsh If the Mekons have an album out they will probably be on my list. I recently got their download only 2020 release, Exquisite. so I haven't had the time to absorb it. They were also one of the last live shows I saw pre-lockdown; it was in Brooklyn, Summer 2019. Eric has been on a roll with his later albums. Eric and Amy Rigby don't live too far from me, in the NY Hudson Valley, and I would often run into them at local shows. They are both the nicest people.
@@burmajones803 Great band that I have yet to see live. I lapsed a bit in 2020, so I didn't get The Universe Inside in time for the list that year.
@@johnlefsky8731 I really like The Universe Inside. Bold departure for so late in their career. Saw them in 1988 right before they recorded Live at Raji's. Powerful show.

(Honourable Mentions: Rammstein - Rammstein, Sleaford Mods - Eton Alive, Caroline Polachek - Pang)
Really Good Albums (4 Stars):
5. Billie Eilish - when we all fall asleep where do we go?
(This seems to be a pretty underrated Electro-Pop album for ‘music lovers’. Really strong album. Also, very different sounding from most of the other pop stuff. Lovin’ it.)
Amazing Albums (5 Stars):
4. black midi - Schlagenheim
(This is just an amazing debut album. It’s like Sonic Youth in the early 80s but actually interesting and thoughtful. ‘bmbmbm’ is such a unique and epic song, I love it. The vocalist sings the same lyrics all the time, but it’s never boring. “She moves with a purpose. What a magnificent purpose”.)
3. Tool - Fear Inoculum
(It took a little more than 10.000 days until Tool released a new album. It is a combination of everything that made Tool strong on past albums, therefore it's their best. It has a really mystical vibe, also songs like ‘Pneuma’ and ‘Culling Voices’ are really well written.)
2. Minuit Machine - Infrarouge
(The pinnacle of modern Darkwave/Dark Synth-Pop. 10 songs, every song better than the other. If you don’t mind a French accent and like some melancholic melodical Synth-Pop, I’d highly recommend this to you. The best songs are imo on the second half of the album. No song is weak on this album though.)
1. Lana del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!
(Holy macaroni! This is by far her best work to date. 14 songs, pretty long album, but damn, all the songs are amazing. ‘The Next Best American Record’ is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. She really stepped up her game for this album. A truly amazing record!)
I still have to purchase Fear Inoculum (I have all their other albums) but for some reason they are all grossly expensive!
@@toonhkuitjes6382 The pricing of the album is completely unnecessary, I agree.
I was sure we would share Schlagenheim - and I was right.
@@roxannewalsh Nice!
Schlagenheim was my number one. It's one of the best debut albums in years. So inventive. An album that takes the listener down many stylistic roads. It's utterly sublime in places. My number 1.
