They told Alan Rickman that they were going to drop him on the count of three. They dropped him on one. The look of surprise on his face is real. Definitely a Christmas movie.
I bet there was a fight after that surprise lol
According to Alan Rickman's interview about the filming, producers counted to 2 rather than 3 from a height of 40 feet.
Nothing says Crismas as dropping Rickman of a building.
and Alan Rickman was afraid of heights!
and he was a fantastic actor!
There are two types of people in this world. People that think Die Hard is a Christmas movie and people that are wrong
Is Die Hard rated G?
He wrote HO HO HO on a corpse... how could it not be a Christmas movie!
If Alan Rickman says, Ho Ho Ho, it's a Christmas movie.
When this movie came out, the "action heroes" of the day were Stallone and Schwarzenegger. No one was expecting Bruce Willis to show up and knock it out of the park with this role. I'm not a huge fan of the sequels but Die Hard remains an action classic forever.
Especially as this was both main stars (Bruce and Alan) first movie.
The original and the third entry (Die Hard With a Vengeance) are the best entries in the series.
The best thing is, Stallone looks like a boxer. Schwarzenegger looks like a bodybuilder. Bruce Willis looks like your dad, or any other middle-aged, balding dude. When Schwarzenegger is fighting, you assume it's easy for him. Willis struggles, so it feels so much more real and visceral.
The is something about the character of John McCain,
@@PrinceJediMaster It was Rickman's first movie but not Bruce's. He'd done a couple forgettable comedic movies. This was however his first starring role in a non comedic (mostly) movie. Bruce Willis was comparable to someone like Steve Guttenberg or pre-Batman Michael Keaton before Die Hard. He was mostly a TV actor. After this he was Bruce Willis action hero movie star. To put it into perspective, it'd be like if 20 years Adam Sandler was cast as The Punisher and knocked it out of the park..
The whole plot can't take place without Christmas, no Christmas company party, and he wouldn't be coming home without the holiday. It is central to the plot.
It is 100% a Christmas movie, Hans down!
1. the theft plan was centred on it being Christmas and the building being empty due to that with the exception of the needed hostages at the Christmas party.
2. John McClain was only there because it was Christmas.
3. The entire plot is rooted in Christmas despite not having any classic Christmas themes.
I think what people mean by "Christmas movie" isn't is theme but if it's traditionally watched at Christmas. Which Die Hard absolutely is.
Where I'm from all James Bond movies are considered Christmas movies because traditionally, they were always aired around Christmas.
“Hans down”. I see what you did there!
@patinho5589 haha, I couldn't resist! Old habits Die Hard I guess....
Dead bad guy dressed up with a nice festive holiday note. Even the tape used to stick the gun to the McClain's back is Christmas themed if you pay close enough attention or pause it to read it.
yes, you summed it up, well. if it wasn't based on christmas, the movie wouldn't happen
You guys should be proud. Your chemistry is getting better every video you do. You two are very entertaining
This is the movie that put Bruce Willis on the map as a serious box office contender, and also upped the ante for American action films. Willis was already popular from his TV show, "Moonlighting", co-starring Cybil Shepherd, but it wasn't until Die Hard that he became an international superstar. It grossed $139,434,346: foreign and domestic, during it's initial run, off of a $28 million dollar budget, making almost 5 times the production costs.
As the saying goes, "It's not christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Plaza" 😄
This is my favorite Christmas movie because I look forward to watching at Christmas. Thanks guys!
Clarence Gilyard Jr (Theo) just passed away last week. 😢 He also starred on Matlock and Walker Texas Ranger. RIP
Also he failed to break ice blocks in Karate Kid 2 and he played Sundown in Top Gun!
It is a Christmas movie. One of the most important examples is because it reunited a family.
Absolutely, most definitely a Christmas movie. Just not in a typical way.
Han's reaction when he falls at the end was genuine. They were supposed to drop him on the count of three for the shot, but the direct sneakily told the rig guys to drop him on the count of one, so he could get that genuine reaction on his face for the shot. Brilliant!
Playing a villain in a badass action movie must be one of the funnest things of all time.
As others have mentioned, Bruce Willis' main claim to fame was his role in a lighthearted TV series. He had been in a couple of middling movies that didn't do all that well at the box office. Then he was offered 5 million to do this movie. A lot of people including me were skeptical he had the chops to pull it off. Boy, were we wrong! This is one of a handful of movies I never get tired of watching. The others include "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Hunt for Red October."
Yeah. He was a funny guy in Moonlighting. It was a surprise to see him in this role.
Definitely a Christmas movie! It's basically Home Alone but with slightly less violence LOL
It's a movie about a man whose family is in trouble at the very beginning potentially on the verge of a divorce and he goes through an experience on Christmas Eve that shows him the value of his family to me that's a Christmas movie.
It's crazy how well this movie still holds up. The simplicity of the beats that actually started a movie genre work because the acting is done magnificently, especially for an action movie. Each character gets the reaction desired and the pacing is near perfect. Little details emerge upon each rewatch, too. This is important because there are a lot of subtle character moments. I can't imagine how Bruce Willis life must have drastically changed during this movies theatrical run. I know he was already in a fairly successful tv show, moonlighting, known more for comedy, much like Michael Keaton would also subvert expectations as Batman soon afterwards, but this movie catapulted Bruce Willis to mega star status and at the end of a decade dominated by Action stars like Arnold, and Sly, Willis became the relatable Hero.
an estranged husband overcoming obstacle's to be with his family at Christmas ..totally a Christmas movie
1. It takes place during a holiday office party
2. It has Christmas music - The “Die Hard” soundtrack is loaded with Christmas songs. “Winter Wonderland,” “Let it Snow!,” “Christmas in Hollis,” and “Ode to Joy” are all on the soundtrack and make appearances in one form or another in the film.
3. Santa Claus (sort of) makes an appearance
4. It snowing
One of the two credited writers of the film, Steven de Souza has publicly declared “If ‘Die Hard’ is not a Christmas movie, then ‘White Christmas’ is not a Christmas movie”. He pointed out that, unlike White Christmas, his movie took place entirely at Christmas
Ok kids. Weren't you raised on Harry Potter? The head bad guy became Professor Snape of Slytherin
Thank goodness they weren’t 😂😂
I was like 3 weeks away from being 17 when this movie came out. My cousin and I went to this movie, he was 17 and you're supposed to be 18 to take a 16 year old in, but the guy at the theater was really cool. Every time I watch reactors, it takes me back. Good reaction. Check out First Blood and the other Rambos if you haven't. Good 80s action flicks, First Blood will blow your mind.
I was 19. Somehow I never heard about this film when it came out. I didn’t see it until it came out on cable later that year.
I can clearly remember wishing that I’d been able to see it in the theater.
I worked at a theater showing this back in the day and the audience lost their shit! And the world gave us the late great Alan Rickman, of which I will always be grateful.
If this is a Christmas movie, so is "Lethal Weapon" and "Lethal Weapon 2". As an aside, a friend of mine is an actor. He worked with Alan Rickman on the HBO movie "Something the Lord Made". He said Rickman was one of the nicest people he ever worked with.
I learnt toefists from Die Hard, and it works a treat. Basically a simple foot massage. Eases the pressure points and gets the blood circulating. Also, I'm friends with one of the two Die Hard writers, and he sent me a whole list of reasons why it most definitely is a Christmas movie.
I highly recommend the movie "Trading Places", starring Eddie Murphy, Dan Ackroyd, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Another good Christmas comedy to react to.
I second this recommendation, make sure you see Trading Places before you see Coming to America as there is a relationship between them
"No, the other one" is one of the most underrated lines ever. Paul Gleason and Robert Davi were fantastic in this.
41:15 - This was the shot that they showed in the preview for this film that when I saw it, I knew I HAD to see this movie!!!
This is about a guy trying to get home to see his family in time for Christmas. There are two Christmas movies, DIE HARD and LEATHAL WEAPON. Most of your elders think of this as a Xmas movie because before your iPhones and computers, there used to be a device called a television set, and over the holiday season, EVERY local television station would play these movies over and over. Of course EVERY man and boy that did not want to socialize with their family, would gather in the basement to sneak away and share in this awesomeness. And when it was done, we would change the channel to another station that was airing it. It was truly a blessed time. Cheers to all the 70’s and 80’s babies and yeah a few of you 90’s babies as well.... we had it made.
Definitely one of the most underrated movie reaction channel on RUclips 💯🤘 can’t wait for you guys to get to die hard 3 lol
People get blood clots while flying because they're stationary. Curling your toes helps alleviate that.
This movie is absolutely a 10 in the genre of action.
This was SO good when it came out! Definitely check out the next one!! So many times in this movie I wanted to scream out loud. Very edge of your seat! Oh and yes, Law Enforcement Officers or LEOs as we call them, can bring a gun on the plane. They have a form and they introduce themselves to the flight deck crew and to us flight attendants. We know where they are at all times. We even have escorted prisoners too. Which is so awkward!
This film actually changed the movie industry. After this, every studio was making ‘Die Hard on a boat, plane, train, bus etc.’
(28:40) "Yeah but I got a coke out of it" 😆😆🤣 I spit my coffee out laughing. Great reaction! As always love the commentary!
Definitely a Christmas movie.
Since watching this movie at least 15 years ago I can’t hear or say yippee Kaye without following it with Mo fo after 😂 great reaction y’all
I went to a very laid back rural school way back in the day and we watched this in class when I was in sixth grade. I think the teacher asked a student to pick out a video for us to watch on a special occasion and this is what was picked. People didn't care back then what us kids watched unlike now. Glad you guys loved this Christmas movie and I can't wait to see your reactions to the next Die Hard films! One movie I'd like to recommend for watching on a really crappy winter day is "Misery" with James Caan and Kathy Bates.
He knew Hans wasn't William Clay because on the directory William Clay is on the 29th floor. The guard at the beginning of the movie stated that only people on the 30th floor were in the building for the party.
He knew who Hans was because he saw him from the roof of the elevator when he sent Tony back downstairs
Fantastic reaction! This is my favourite Christmas movie and second favourite movie of all. I've loved it since i was 11 or 12 on the night when it first premiered on British tv in the early 90's.
There are five Die Hard movies: Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard, and A Good Day to Die Hard.
The first three are far better than the he rest.
Lethal Weapon is another fantastic movie that people debate that is a christmas movie too
Everyone gets so excited at the end for Powell, yeah he can kill again. Love it. Great reaction guys, thank you.
Separated means they split up.. haven’t formerly divorced.. and Bruce saying “you’re married to me” means he still wants to be together with her…
My parents have been separated for 20 years.
Lol. Christmas movie. Decorations, music, holiday party. Family reunited. All the good things. You need to put Die Hard 2 & 3 on your watch list.
Great reaction you guys were awesome can’t wait to see y’all react to Die Hard 2 👍😎
Best Christmas movie ever, that is all ....
Yo dudes! Thanks again for another great reactionary video share!
You two asked if this was a Christmas movie? Well, there's been a saying since 1988 . . . it ain't Christmas til you hear Jingle Bells and see Hans Gruber fall from Nakatomi Towers ;^) By the way, Alan Rickman is also known for another so- called Christmas film (Love Actually) with Keira Knightly, Liam Neison, and a bunch of other brits. Don't know if you meant for this to be a tribute vid, but the black computer criminal that Argyle knocked out actually died about a week ago (RIP Clarence Gilyard JR.).
And, lastly, don't feel bad that you thought that the guy that came out shooting at the very end was dead. A lot of people thought that he was well- hung before they found out otherwise. Same thing goes for my past girlfriends and me ;^)
Keep up the good work, you two. All the Best!
It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls of the Nakatomi Building. End of story.
There was a case where a 911 operator was on the phone with a person whom car had stopped on a train track and she (the operator) wouldn't believe the caller was stuck in the car and needed help. The audio recording had the driver shouting on how the train was coming and you could even hear when the car was struck by the train. When the police and the emergency responders did finally show up the driver was still swearing and cussing the about the 911 operator. It was no surprise when the operator was fired for mishandling the call.
Also just to say that obviously the driver survived an some how the seat he was locked into was knocked out of the car and by some miracle the driver had survived it incident with out serious injury.
Its a 100% christmas action movie full of christmas references right down to the bearer bonds falling from the Nakotomi building like snow at the end.
Definitely a Christmas movie. This is what made Bruce Willis the action here that he is. Yippie Kaye.
You fellas found the perfect Christmas action movie. Hope you enjoyed it.
Gremlins was more authentically Christmas than Die Hard
@@reptomicus who cares
Every Die Hard reaction should be followed up with The Last Boy Scout.
@@reptomicus Gremlins is more a horror comedy than action, though.
I loved the expressions on your faces when you saw the building exploding. This was back in the day, when if you wanted to blow up a building, you had to *do it.* For real. No CGI, no special effects, nothing. You just did it. This is why people say good practical effects hold up really well over time.
Zay: That's OK. I've walked up escalators before.
Hans: Place orange cones at the top and bottom of all the escalators.
Zay: BASTARDS!!!
As movie addicts I think we all logically know that if a movie takes place at all during Christmas time it is therefore a Christmas movie 😀❤️🍿👍🎄
The interesting thing about this movie is that the entire movie took place in only one place, the office building and. nowhere else. They did a great job.
“The Towering Inferno” is another classic from the previous generation.
One of the best Christmas movies that just so happens to be an action movie😉
I loved y'all said" Doesn't he have a cell phone"? 1989 a cell phone call was 20 dollars a call. Only very wealthy people had them. Normal folks had pagers
I like your hawaian shirt. I've got several and waiting to wear it again with just a jean jacket when I go walking when spring comes. Oh...the movie. I haven't finished watching your reactions. I've seen your other reactions so I anticipate it to be good.
I love that they caught the look on Ellis’s face when Karl hands him the the coke instead of some coke. That usually goes over people’s heads the first time they see this:)
While not "a founding father of action films", 'Die Hard' is certainly a classic!
It makes an unexpected departure from the established well-trained, deathless, war-machine "Action Movie Hero" (typically played by Stallone and Schwarzenegger), with John McClane being more of a vulnerable "every man" thrust into an increasingly dangerous situation.
It isn't a Christmas movie...
IT IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE!
That makes no sense.
The main reason I think so many class Die Hard as a Christmas movie is because of the nostalgia factor. Im 29 year’s old and remember Die Hard being on television every christmas. Certain movies just give you that Christmas feeling and this movie is definitely one of them
What makes this movie so influential, before this action movies had heroes. New super heroes as the lead. John Mclaine suffered constant injury, barely surviving each battle. After this came out, lots of movies tried this formula. It changed the over all tone of action movies.
It is definitely a Christmas movie. Yes it is an action movie. But you also see the family conflict with John and Holly and the conflict causes John to realize that he is being an idiot and tell his wife he is sorry. Also, Hans is holding on to the rolex and they have to choose to lose the rolex.
It was done in 88 and it is not in NY, but in LA. There is an area called Century City right next to Hollywood and that is where this is supposed to be
The thing about bearer bonds is, no explanation is required. That's why they're better than cash.
McClain could never have hidden the pistol if he didn't have the Christmas tape to attach it to his back. If it had been a 4th of July party, John would have been screwed.
Totally a Christmas movie.
This came out July 15th 1988... STILL a christmas movie.
If you watch the scene again, the brother had gotten a finger under the chain. In movies, that always means he didn't choke. In real life, he could still break his neck but in 80s cinema, it's about choking and he didn't.
The sequel also takes place at Christmas. Number three and four are during the summer. They are all equally Ho,Ho,Ho.
Make sure u watch the third one...Die Hard with A Vengeance - with Samuel L Jackson. EPIC!
Thanks, Cameron! Thanks, Isaiah! 🌃 #CamAndZay #JohnMcTiernan #DieHard
Much more of a Christmas Movie than "It's a Wonderful Life" which is not only not about Christmas the story actually skips over Christmas. Yes, there are still Christmas decorations up, however that part of the movie takes place at New Years.
The reason so many think of It's a Wonderful Life as a Christmas movie is that for a few decades, the rights to the film were in the public domain, so it was constantly on TV on every channel during December. It was as ubiquitous during that time of year as Christmas music.
Saw you were doing this one and hit Like before Play, lol. I'll be dragging at work in the morning but screw it, I'm watching now. This is gonna be fun.
Movie Pallete!! What a crazy, wild, beautiful concept!!! GENIUS!!
A must.....87's lethal weapon
The fact that it's Christmas is integral to the plot. It's more of a Christmas Movie than "It's a Wonderful Life" is.
To this day, if it is an exceptionally busy day at work and someone comes in during the middle, often with that panicky look on their face, because nobody likes to come in and immediately be slammed, i wait until they look at me, and i say...."welcome to the party, pal."
if someone dropped me off a building like that best believe I'd unload the clip on them as I was falling..
Cam's background is much more palatable now. 😉
There are 5 of these. You should watch the first 4: Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard
Hey guys great review just to let you know a lot of the '80s movies mostly all of them do not have post credit scenes
Don't get how people say "Diehard is not a Christmas movie"? It has all the tenents of the classic Christnas miracle story... right down to the last minute making it home to family, the unexpected "snowing" (bearer-bonds), the miracles, the savior, seeking redemption for recognized failures, clear messages about focusing on material wealth over goodwill leading to destruction, It is a classic Christmas tale - but people struggle to see it through an action lens.
"Die Hard" the original was/is and will be a timeless Classic movie. "Die Hards 2" Holds its own.
What are the themes of a Christmas movie? Family... getting back together and realizing how important your family is above other concerns... and some tension or situation being the catalyst to that epiphany. So Die Hard has an estranged husband coming to reconnect with his wife and kids but there is pride and conflict between them still... Then the "situation" happens as is traditional in Christmas movies to shock the main character into realizing their mistakes and reconciling with their family. It just so happens that the "situation" in this case is a heist disguised as a terrorist attack.
Loved the reaction. RIP Alan Rickman... a great actor.
You guys are hilarious, glad the algorithm pointed me your way and good luck for 10K by April. I bet you'll have near 20K by then, really, keep up the good work!
1. Karl/Alexander Godunov😇 also played in "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and "Witness" with non Indiana/Solo Harrison Ford. He had a very interesting story.
2. Robinson/Paul Gleason 😇 seems to always play buttheads. I.e. "Trading Places" and "The Breakfast Club".
3. John will have a place to stay tonight after all.😍😋😈 After a night like that me better.
4. Another fun Willis movie that have similar events is "The Last Boy Scout". They drop more F-bombs that you can shake a stick at. Including a little girl.
5. Christmas movie? Yes, it takes place at a Christmas party. For those who say it could have been anywhere. It wasn't.
6. Missing you Bruce.☹
To show the impact this had on the industry, for years when someone had to pitch an action, they would say, "This is like Die Hard in a ____" A bus, a train ship or whatever. And it would get the green light.
Great reaction, love you guys.
Did someone say cell phones? In 1988 😂We wish...
We still read folding maps ( paper with lines for roads drawn on them)😂
1988 cellphone
photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/2545/1619/1600/cit2.jpg
For a lot of people this movie became a Christmas tradition. I watch it every Christmas
Guys this movie came out in 1988 there were no cell phones back then. lol
15:34 "don't you have a cell phone?" adorable.
Great reaction to a wonderful "Christmas" film. I hope you do at least the next two: Die Hard 2, and Die Hard With A Vengeance.
Btw, there are five films in the series.
I saw this in the 80s when it was a new movie. Afterwards, I came back to the same theater - and watched it two more times. As an suspense/thriller this movie works magnificently - and is another shining example of why 80s action movies rocked! Still great today - as you guys can attest. No CGI. Launched Bruce Willis's film career. And, it's far better than all the _Die Hard_ sequels they made. Cheers!
Lethel Weapon with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is a buddy cop movie, and it came out before this one. It has action but it is during Christmas so there is a debate about this one as well. You should check it out, it is great if you are into this kind of action film
It's Christmas. The bearer bonds floating down in the end was snow. A white Christmas. It's a modern parody of what a Christmas movie is
4 Die Hard movies. 1 and 2 are classics (both Christmas movies!) I really like #4 as it's more modern. It's underrated.
#3....was just ok to me.
Should be a fun rabbit hole for you guys.
#3 was too different from the first two. it's still good but different! It's like they wanted to break the christmas streak.
5 die hard movies. Sadly last one really sucked. Loved the first 4
1 and 3 are my favourites. bruce willis and sam jackson together was epic!!! and yes I agree I don't understand the hate that 4 gets. 5 sucks tho
