What On Earth is "Destiny Frontiers"? - And What It Definitely Isn't | Destiny 2 The Final Shape

- The Final Shape's story has concluded and with that conclusion Bungie released a Vidoc titled "Destiny The Journey Ahead". In this Video they told us about the 3 upcoming episodes (Echoes, Remnant, and Hersey) but they also teased what's coming to Destiny 2 in 2025 - which was something they called "Codename Frontiers". Given thatteaser this is obviously not the project's real name but it begs the question - What is this? Is it an expansion? More episodes? Destiny 3 (it isn't)? In today's video I wanted to discuss these possibilities with you all while also breifly commenting on the end of The Final Shape and the game going forward!

If CoD is 200+ GBs with a lot less content, and Black Ops 6 is 310GB, Destiny 2 can be around the same size and just give us another solar system. Right? We just press the right or left DPad and it slides over to another solar system…right?

currently destiny 2 destinations are only organized as in the same system with how the menus are set up. assuming their code is decently clean they should be able to create a separate directory for other systems and each location would increase the game size just as much as adding if the location were added as part of our solar system.

The problem has never been about the download size, it’s to do with code debt(needing to work on old stuff to be able to make something new), interaction complexity(all the functions of destiny’s code can’t be overlapped without a lot of work) and engine limitations(the destiny 2 engine is just an updated destiny 1 engine which is and updated halo reach engine which is an updated halo ce engine first made in about 1999, and although the engine is incredible and powerful, it does have limits)
There’s also a few more things I’m missing but from my own work in computer science, I do not envy the amount of work bungie would have to do to make multiple new planets and factions.

I want a large book with the entire lore with all the story up to the conclusion of final shape to be released. That way, I can have the story with me forever.(a physical book)
Me and my friend were in a vc in discord and he brought up how it'd be funny if the vex brought out time lords and just erased the witness and then I said it would've been cool if some part of the vex became our allies like how cabal and fallen did in seasons, and obviously that sounds really crazy but then we thought of a fun idea where Bungie gives us "What If" episodes and allows us to experience different outcomes of our story. For example what if we weren't able to stop the vex invasion on the last city back in splicer, what if our guardian became a disciple, etc.

Ten years in one week. I’m so happy it’s over and glad that I got to see it through from start to finish. However, I can’t help but feel for the friends I made along the way that couldn’t be there to see how it ended. I hope the best for those that are still around and hope those who are not know what we did.
I bet we’ll be piloting the Dreadnaught out of the Sol System.

After playing the first week of echo and seeing saints dream with osiris that they one day wanna leave the solar system and travel and make there own mark it really makes me believe that bungie is leading up too leaving our solar system and discovering new races or even visiting and taking back the homeworlds of certain races, like the fallen, hive and cabal. or even a battle up to the winnower. I truly believe that whatever bungie is cooking up its too hot to show right now they letting it simmer for us even that is too hot lol

Is it possible that this is a pso2 situation, for those who don’t know phantasy star online 2 is an mmo rpg, that has 2ish games in it being pso2 and pso2 new genesis, so in D2’s case it would be D2 and D2 frontiers both could be installed or just one. With D2 acting as the sol system and frontiers being wherever we’re heading next but you’re character and items can freely move between them.

They could also allow the first 3 campaigns to be reinstalled in a similar way as well, maybe.
Considering how echos started with saint and osiris dream of exploring and then when the bungie team said that the eliksni are looking for a new planet to live on we are certainly looking into maybe exploring outside our solar system for sure

Codenamed so it doesn't possibly ruin the story arc the seasons are building. It 100% will be an expansion, they can't charge us a $100 for 3 episodes and they still need that money coming in. Dev said on reddit the dreadnought is an activity not a full on patrol space. Echoes opening missions absolutely hint at leaving our system. Frontier refers to an unexplored area or space. The final season before it is taking us to a ship capable of fast interstellar travel. We now have Cabal allies with a home world we could help take back. We have a hive homeworld to see. We need to help find a home for the Fallen. EVERYTHING is pointing to us leaving Sol.
You know what's sad? Some day we won't be able to play the Light vs. Dark saga in any capacity. Stuff like that is why I don't like the removal of story content and why I'd want a Destiny 3. Destiny 1 and 2 deal with the conflict between Light and Dark while Destiny 3 sets up, and deals with, a different overarching conflict.
I really like the idea of now that we have defeated the witness we can take on a more explorer role and expand outside of sol

With the launch of Echos today, if you listen to Osiris and Saint-14 story on helm with Failsafe, he clearly mentions his dream with Osiris having their own space station or something and be able to explore space for more. 3:06

I think we'll go outside Sol pretty soon. People counted 9 echoes in the cutscene they emphasized they went "all over the galaxy." I'm thinking a normal expansion followed by 3 episodes for 2 more years, and then mayyyyybe Destiny 3 in 2027. I personally don't want a D3, but if the game size becomes too much, then I get it
What if when bungie expands the game with frontiers, they added something like monster hunter? Exploring a new world, killing huge monsters that you come across, without or with the minimal involvement from an overarching boss enemy? I think that would be sick

Locations:
I was reading the r/destiny2 reddit recently and came across an idea that is a possibility for the future, basically they were saying that the next couple episodes/seasons/expanisons are going to be about reclaiming lost homeworlds from our new allies. For example we may go to Torobatl to fight Xivu Arath and assist in the rebuild of the planet to retake the Cabals homeworld. This to me seems likely, especially with the final cutscene with Saint and Osiris saying they are going to explore the universe together, in this you can also see many small ships around them insinuating that more then just those two are going to explore. I think its very likely we're leaving the Sol system and thus going to these pre-established planets seems the most likely.
Enemies:
I was watching the most recent Byf video recently who went over the story of the Winover and the Gardener, in it he established that the Winover was a real characer who potentially created The Witness to create its "final shape". Its also implied that there are more then just The Witness as the Winovers creations. I believe the future of Destiny is going to be slowly building up to finding and defeating the Winover. In a similar way to how we beat The Witness. Finding and killing its disciples (one of which was The Witness and is dead) until eventually from somehow we are assisted by The Gardener to kill the Winover.
Just a theory but who knows could be fun :)
Something smaller (like Rise of Iron was to bridge the gap for D2) would make sense this time, as a bridge to D3.
Id particularly enjoy it if we would end up piloting the Dreadnought after Episode 3 and then Frontiers is 3 additinal episodes all set on the dreadnaught, with the playspace gradually growing from one activity playspace to a bigger area with each episode and the skybox changing as we manoeuvre out of the solar system, until we get D3 starting the story of us arriving.

I’m could see destiny do the next 2-3 years having us slowly exploring different places and the last year of episodes (not this year) will have us going to different systems and then it will be destiny 3 or a big overhaul of destiny 2 going to the next big arch
Ik you probably ain't gonna see this toad, but what i think would be cool is, obv the sword you get from finishing the final shape is the same as the one on our grave from way back when (forget what season, pretty sure it was during shadowkeep), our guardian dies at the end of the last episode, and it wraps everything up and leads us into a new game/expansion. Ik, probably a dumb idea, but i just think its neat.

I stopped playing January of '20. I came into Final Shape blind, paid for the dlc day before launch. I had 2500 hours. Im overwhelmed in the best way, and i have the 2 free dlc's that were on PS+, which ive been told are pretty big with alot to do as well. D2 is one of my few platinums. Im like a new player again with familiarity. Its very nice to be back.
does humanity even have any space crafts that can leave the solar system? Cuz if not based on what they said about the dreadnaught it does make sense we would use it to travel beyond if that is the direction

What if Frontiers is a spinoff game? Stories of certain Guardians, or maybe a game set in the Dark Age? We have so much lore on what the Dark Age was like-- why not let us be an Warlord, or a normal Lightbearer Scavenger? A game set in the Dark Age, or just post-Collapse would be a perfect set piece with the codename "Frontiers"?
As awesome as it would be to go to another galaxy. That would be a bold feat to make happen. Something that could be more feasible is explore more our very own galaxy. As the Milk Way galaxy is still very expansive which is nothing to scuff at.

Leaks that are credible say Frontiers is another Age of Triumph. Not sure I'd play a Destiny 3 unless my gear is transferring. Who wants to let go of 7 years of stuff?
After seeing "Frontiers" had me thinking of Sonic Frontiers, but Cayde-6 replacing Sonic as a mod, rescuing Ikora, Zavala, and Crow

I think codename frontiers will set up a new story for the future, after the introduction of “frontiers”. The next game will take place, this time fixing the mistakes the previous games had at launch (bad writing, no content etc.) Bungie is just afraid to make the same mistakes again because destiny can’t afford to slip up again so they will take all the time they need to produce a follow up of the second game that’s worthy this time to take the franchise to new frontiers. If you ask me, the third game will probably be set for a 2027-2028 release

I don't mean to be that guy, but andromeda is a galaxy not a solar system. It wouldn't make sense for us go to andromeda when there are millions of systems in the milky way.

I won’t lie - I’m over the content vaulting of D2. I hate paying for expansions and losing access to that content (raids, story, etc.). They should have made D3 awhile ago and kept D2 as a complete game.

I Just hope that we see more attention being put forth toward PvP. It could use a rework.
Destiny 3 is not happening, the only ways to happen are:
1- Make an Overwatch 2 with Destiny 2, a massive rework on the engine, mechanics, gameplay, etc. and launching like a new game. This happens with other games and actually it worked, like Warframe.
2- U can import every content earned in D2 in D3, because no body wants to regrind againd the same content in a reworked activity launched after 7 years. D2 is still a service game, so its not ending, and if it is, is going to be the first big punch to the live service games.
We are not just talking about mechanics and gameplay, even in the lore and ours guardians history, Destiny 3 is going to be a anticlimatic step, we are like a Doom Slayer at this point with our loot, armor, etc. we cant just go back. And we havent even started talking abput the player numbers and players who are leaving after Final Shape and they´re not coming back, just imagine the players drop if D3 is a reality. D3 is maybe a concept in Bungie´s board, but it is so far a fantasy from the players base after we finished the first saga. Just like Halo Infinite´s placebo effect in its launch
