I'm from New Zealand, and me and a group of mates (a mix of queer and straight) were on two year travel visas in our late 20s. We found ourselves in Manchester and we rented an apartment right at the end of Canal Street across from Manto's in early 2000, just after this series had aired in the UK. We lived the lifestyle of Queer as Folk, all the bars and clubs named in the episodes were actual places we went to most nights of the week. One of my group had bought a recently converted apartment in Castlefield that looked exactly like Stuart's pad. We were always out on 'the pull', and had just as much fun and adventures as the characters in this program. I ended up getting a flat in the suburb Withington which is mentioned in a later episode. The program doesn't mention that HIV was going around at that time and one of my best mates contracted it, thankfully he manages it with drugs to this day and has had no serious problems with it. I remember our time there as the best time of my life, the scene was so vibrant, inclusive and permission-giving, and I found myself during those couple of years in every way. Most Kiwis travel all over the UK and Europe during their OE (overseas experience), but we had such a great time centred around The Village that we didn't want to go anywhere else. I thank all the wonderful Mancunian friends I made during the amazing time I had (many I keep in touch with over Facebook) and I hope they're all doing well and prospering.

The street scene reminds me of the first time I went to Christopher St. in the West Village. It was just wall to wall men! I thought that I had died and went to heaven. 😛 Now it’s been “gentrified”. There are still a few gay bars there but it’s nothing like it used to be.
