    I once found a half crown in between some cobbles in my local town centre, way back in 1964,I was on my way to school at the time,But for the rest of that day,I thought I was rich. I have always liked the half crown , ever since .Thanks for the excellent information on our pre decimal coinage,

    Thanks for another clear and concise video. I believe the BRITT:OMN was dropped from the obverse legend because of it was felt that it was associated with colonialism, a subject that had come under more scrutiny after the World War II.

    • @greghowe3293
      @greghowe3293 2 года назад

      I’ve always thought about this too, but in my research have found different explanations as to what BRITT:OMN actually means.
      Some say “of all the Britons” as in British people and some say “of all the Britains” as in British territories...
      If it does indeed mean British territories then yes, decolonisation makes sense, but “of all the Britons” may have just been taken out to reduce clutter and make the coins of the new reign more modern?
      I don’t have the full Latin available to understand the grammar to faithfully translate. I’ve heard that the extra T in BRITT was done intentionally to enforce some Latin grammar rules anyway.
      Interesting thought

    • @herbidaceous
      @herbidaceous 2 года назад +2

      @@greghowe3293 I think BRITT as an abbreviation first appeared on the 'new' coinage of 1860. It is the short form of Britanniarum meaning 'of Britannia' - Britannia being the name the Romans called Britain. So it would refer to the dominion over which the monarch ruled, including Scotland, Wales and Ireland/Northern Ireland, some of the population of which would no doubt have not considered themselves to be Britons.
      Apparently, there was considerable public debate in 1860 when the 'new' coins appeared as to whether there should be one or two 'T's as historically Britanniarum could be spelt with one or two 'T's depending on the emperor (the Greek name for Britain was spelt with two just to confuse further).
      But in classical Latin abbreviations the additional letter is added after the first syllable, the letter being a repetition of the last letter of the first syllable, so 'TT' was technically correct and so won the day.
      Interestingly, the OMN was only included on the legend after Victoria, starting with Edward VII.
      Here endeth the lesson!

    • @greghowe3293
      @greghowe3293 2 года назад

      @@herbidaceous Thank you for an interesting and in depth response! That’s also something I’d thought about before, why Victoria had BRITT:REGINA written with no OMN.

    • @grahamturner5963
      @grahamturner5963 2 года назад +1

      @@greghowe3293 - I wondered this when I started collecting coins (early 70s). As far as I can make out, Victoria was Queen of Britain (BRITT:REG) and became Empress in 1877. The OMN was added to show she was Queen and Empress of all Britons wherever they were

    At least one half-crown has been minted following decimalisation. It was issued in 2023, for Gibraltar. It was issued at £2.50 to tie in with the current crowns, which are issued at £5.00. It might be useful to have the half-crown again, as it would be useful for making up five pounds in coins.

    Hi, I just received an 1807 slave trade £2 coin from 2007 with a mint error, the dots around the queen's head stop halfway around the circle, so the middle silver part is off-centred. The writing around the side of the coin is also upside down if you hold the queen face-up. I'm not sure about the value, could you tell me?

    • @CoinPatrol
      @CoinPatrol  2 года назад +1

      Hi Steffan. The vanishing dots is common on the £2 coins. It's just where the inner piece dosn't line up properly with the outer ring.
      The edge inscription is put on the blanks first, then they go back in the hopper to be minted. So it's 50/50 which way up the writing will be.

    The actual perspective on this is at the time of the half a Crown Coin worth two shillings and sixpence, a US Dollar would get you eight of them for a pound, as 4 times a five Shilling Crown was worth a dollar. That is how much Our Currency has been illegally Debased (debasing Our Currency is one of the Nation's most Serious Crimes, and regarded as High Treason) in the years since and which accelerated rapidly with its replacement with Decimal Currency and joining EEC Financial Mismanagement in the 1970's. 8n 1970, a pint of Beer in a Pub, was two shillings -10p, and a .pint of Cider in a Pub was ten pence , about 4p. A Meal for two in a Top .Italian Pizza Restaurant in Bristol, large Pizzas, a glass of House wine each plus two Cassata ice reams, for under one pound, with the change being a decent tip. Starting to see what has been done to us by the Banking Crime Syndicate Yet ? 🤔

    I remember a man finding this coin in he's change and he bought a packet of cigarettes from a machine mistakenly putting the coin in the slot.

      The Machine gave packets of 16 Cigarettes for the Convenience. A packet of 20 is now over ten pounds. We are being ripped off with prices today, nobody back then would have believed. 🤔☹️

      In the 1960's you could, even had machines on Railway Platforms. The price of packets of 20 went up in the early 1970's, so in machines you had 16 Cigarettes in 20 sized packets. In the 1960's with taxes based on weight of tobacco, smaller Cigarettes like Number 6, Diplomat, and Sovereign Came put to keep the retail price down. Bigger Cigarettes like Passing Clouds started disappearing in the 70's, and Fake Tobacco Cigarettes started appearing, so the Tax Sustem changed to the number of Cigarettes in a packet, so Superking size Cigarettes started appearing. In the 1960's, The place to buy Cigarettes was Gibraltar, with a packet of 20 costing two shillings, 10p today. Highest price was three shillings 15p today for a packet of 25 Sobranie Black Russian. In Spain, Spanish Cigarettes like 20 Ducados, were the peseta equivalent of 11 pence, under 5p today, from a Machine, with Virginia tobacco Cigarettes costing a little bit more. CSupporters of General Franco in the Spanish Civil War, were given Tobacco Shop Franchises all Across Spain, and if crossing the Border into Spain the Border Guards were not happy, unless gifted some of the Best Cigarettes in the World at the time, English Cigarettes. I was stuck on a Coach on the Pyranees Border, until a passenger got into his luggage in the luggage Compartment, to Retrieve some of the Duty Free Cigarettes he had bought before getting on the flight to the South of France. If I remember right, they were Benson and Hedges. 👍
