Flying to GREENLAND from ICELAND - the flight most people won't experience in a lifetime

- Hi everyone! This is the second video in my Iceland & Greenland series.
In this vlog, I travel to Greenland, the largest non-continental island in the world. It was a special trip for many reasons, in part because it is an extremely remote destination that is very difficult to get to - for many if not most of us, logistics, finances and a fear of getting stuck in remote places are very real obstacles that get in the way of travelling to Greenland.
There is not a lot of content on the platform in relation to Greenland itself or getting to Greenland, probably in part due to the challenges I mentioned above. To that end, I decided to make this vlog a little longer than usual to try and record as much relevant information and footage as possible.
This vlog captures my journey all the way from Reykjavik Airport in Iceland to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. In addition to the epic flight that features drifting icebergs in the North Atlantic, you will get an idea of the Reykjavik and Nuuk airports (both extremely tiny!) and see great scenery and interesting, colourful architecture from the taxi ride I took from Nuuk Airport. The vlog ends with me checking into my hotel and speaking with some of the Greenlandic staff at the hotel.
For the competitive bunch among you, there is a quiz question about Greenland - the answer will be revealed at some point in the vlog.
As always, it is a pleasure taking you with me on these journeys virtually. I hope you enjoy it and let me know if you would like to see more vlogs of my flights to various destinations. I cannot wait to explore Greenland further with all of you!

Wonderful environment out there
Thank you my friend, I really value your support and encouragement!
Ahhh brings back memories .. I made the exact same trip in 2010, ended up downtown Nuuk, met some of the loveliest people there!
Glad my video made you relive your experience there! And thanks for checking out my content :)
Emotional! I'm from South Greenland (Qaqortoq) but has been in Nuuk 7 times, for some 40 years. I've have a lot of family up there and spend several weeks, sailing the fiords with the most stunning landscapes. I live in Aarhus, Denmark (since 1983) and miss my country, very mutch. Love your v-logs. 💙
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm delighted that these vlogs give you so much enjoyment. I appreciate the support!
It is great when a travel vlogger films the actual flight and the build up to it👍. Tiny wee airport but it functions the same as the others! Stunning scenery and more colourful houses in Greenland. Nice to get an upgrade too that must have been special. I read in your vlog description many reasons why people may not wish to travel so far and certainly the fear of being stuck somewhere remote is the one that would prevent me from going, sadly.
Cheers Sheila, glad you enjoyed the whole experience! It was a very special journey for me but I totally get why the remoteness puts you off. For me there is just the thrill of going to these places off the beaten track. I was very grateful for that room upgrade, as I originally booked the cheapest room I could get in Greenland online. That room would not have had a kettle and I would not have had a private bathroom. The upgrade obviously ticked those boxes :) I will also never forget that view of Nuuk harbour from the hotel window!
@@willieexplore it was very nice of them as they could easily just have moved all that stuff out of yours and left their premium room available for bookings. Great customer service👍
@@sheilam4525 definitely, really enjoyed my stay there :)
What an amazing view from the plane! All those icebergs
A very special journey! Thanks for watching!
Excited for you! Hope to make it there one day :)
Thank you! And hope you get there one day too :)
Brilliant adventure Willie! i felt like i was right there with you in the cab
Cheers Gaz! Having just landed in Greenland, I was lost for words for most of the ride. What a special occasion. Thanks for riding along :)
Beautiful journey
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome ! I have seen some of the Greenland, but only from above when flying to Canada, would be great to land there too
It was a wonderful experience!
That was a great pilot with sucha a soft landing. In Greenland they have the midnight sun during this period it get's dark after 1 am or something
Yes it did get dark pretty late and after midnight! I forgot my eye mask so had some issues with light coming through the curtains in the middle of the "night" haha.
Re the plane journey - it was simply amazing. It was only a small Dash 8 plane, but it was the smoothest ride with absolutely no turbulence whatsoever. And yes, the landing was very good :)
I just been there myself, same hotel and same airline, amazing experience 😍
It's wonderful, isn't it! Hope you had a great time in Nuuk!
@@willieexplore yeah . I really wanna go back someday. But it is very expencive airplane ticket. But the hotel was not so expencive :-)
great
Thank you!
When were you in Nuuk? Video uploaded in June but I don’t recall being this much snow left in June🤷🏻♂️
Cheers Rambling Ramul, I was there from 30 May to 3 June :)
Beouty means Greenland
I want to say wao😮❤
It is a truly magical place! Thanks for watching and supporting my channel!
Hi Willie, I just found your RUclips channel, I just subscribed on both my RUclips channels,
It's July 24th, 2022 and I'm trying to plan a trip to Greenland, was it an easy process to book flights to Greenland? Im going to watch all your Greenland videos now.
Thanks for posting
Thank you for your support Javier! I really appreciate it. I will check out your content as well today :)
As for travelling to Greenland, you have two main options. You can either go via Copenhagen in Denmark, or do what I did, which is to go via Reykjavik in Iceland. Most international flights actually land at Kangerlussuaq rather than Nuuk, but I managed to get a direct flight to the latter from Reykjavik.
The process to book is pretty straightforward - if you do it online, it is pretty much the same process you will always follow. There is the small catch that flights are not as frequent and can get cancelled regularly (I've been told) due to weather.
Hope this helps - my Greenland videos will definitely give you a taste of what to expect!
Is this a recent visit? What month? Loved the video
Cheers Jeff! The flight was end of last month (May 2022). My Greenland videos themselves were taken this month (June 2022). So hot off the press :)
It should be good if you mention in your videos the prices in general, either of the general stuff like coffe, etc and also the flights. How long was this flight and its price?
Hi Andy, thanks for your comment! Others have mentioned the same thing before - to that end, I have started to quote general expenses such as food and short journeys such as taxis / buses a bit more in my videos. However, I am slightly reluctant to share what I paid for flights as there is huge fluctuation depending on when you book / search your flight, and some people might get upset if they don't get as good a deal as I got for example. Luckily flight prices are easy to check on sites such as skyscanner, or with the airlines themselves. The coffee and snack at Reykjavik airport were about £5 in total if I recall correctly though.
Not a huge fan of those sunglasses, my dear sir, but otherwise great video! Thank you for taking us on your adventures. The sound of the plane, the view from the plane, watching the mechanics of the plane work… All of that has always fascinated me.
Thanks for watching!
I misread "Disembarking aircraft" as "Denmarking aircraft"
If I flew from Copenhagen, that could have been a real thing!
@@willieexplore Except that would be going to kangerlussuaq
@@ValkyRiver yes indeed
I am going to Greenland in october :-) . Is there no passport control at the airport in Nuuk ?
None :)
I see there is a scarcity of trees in greenland
Massively. Hardly any trees in Nuuk itself but if you travel south you might see more green in general. Fascinating for us who are so used to seeing trees all the time!
What…no bar at the airport?
Not sure if you can buy a beer at the cafeteria! Otherwise no!
