Still light at midnight? Midnight walk in Nuuk, GREENLAND

  • Hello everyone! This is the fourth video in my Iceland & Greenland series.
    In case you've ever wondered what Greenland looks like at midnight, look no further!
    I'm doing a different vlog than usual this time - a mostly silent one. I've always wanted to do a midnight walk in a place very far North whilst it is still light. In this video I do exactly that.
    I left my hotel in Nuuk shortly before midnight. Despite the light, the quietness in the harbour and the city does lend a bit of an eerie edge to the vlog at times. The video does end with some spectacular views from the Hans Egede statue.
    Let me know if you want to see more of these "walking" types of vlogs in future. Please hit that subscribe button - it really helps this channel to grow and to put my content to more people!

    Nuuk is not what I had originally expected. I see small hints of a city trying to grow into being somewhat modern and noticeable by the world. I do notice that most of the structures appear to be very sturdy and well built (not pretty, but obviously trying to look modern.) Even the store signs are quite modern. So much construction, and some of those lighted lamp posts amaze me. Such a fascinating place. I like to think that in about 100 years, Nuuk will be a formidable metropolis. What I am trying to say is that I can almost see something that isn't quite there yet. Thanks Willie for the walking tour.

      Certainly a place that is experiencing a boom in construction and development. Would be very interesting to jump into a time machine and travel to the future Nuuk 100 years from now!

      Very true words there Sheila re a unique experience. It almost felt like I had the entire town to myself (for the most part). Will always remember been teased about my attire (Merry Christmas haha) and the random football in the deserted town centre. And of course that blissful moment overlooking Nuuk from the Hans Egede statue.

    Thanks for this video. It gives a good sense of what the city is like. I am impressed by your camera. It did a good job in a low-light environment. The image is not shaking despite the low light and the walk. What camera settings (ISO, fps) do you use if you don't mind my asking?

    Thank you for this amazing video.
    I have gotten interested in Greenland lately and I was also looking for a video like this one, where someone shows how Nuuk looks like at night during the summer with civil twilight. It just looks so peaceful to walk around, nearly no one is still outside and yet you can enjoy the beautiful twilight scenery, which is not possible in central Europe, where even in June you don't have any useful light left at midnight. Since I am a night owl, I should definitely plan to visit Nuuk during June around the longest day of the year where I can make use of the permanent light to go for a nice walk late at night, after doing some activities in the afternoon and evening.
    Furthermore, you also seem to have won the weather lottery for your visit in Nuuk, since from what I have read on climate diagrams and statistics, it looks like not a lot of days have gotten clear skies in Nuuk.

    As someone who lives among the tall trees of the Pacific Northwest, it is just mind boggling to me not to see a single tree! The other thing I notice is how unimaginative the buildings are, but I presume they are built to be efficient, not pretty. Enjoyed this tour.

    • @willieexplore
      @willieexplore  2 года назад +3

      Many thanks for your comment Doug! Good spot regarding the lack of trees - not the best environment for them to grow, that's for sure. There are more trees and flora in general further south in Greenland though. As for the buildings, they are practical but I really enjoy the various colours which you will see more clearly during the day. In fact, in one of my future, upcoming vlogs I talk a bit more about the architecture if you're interested :)

      Hello Norsiah, thank you for supporting my channel! I hope you'll enjoy Iceland and Greenland as much as I did! Regarding your question - I actually exchanged some DKK whilst in England, but I am pretty sure you'd be able to exchange Icelandic Krona when you are in Iceland for DKK. Note that the currency rates in Iceland at the airports are notoriously poor. You will be able to pay with card at most shops and hotels in Nuuk (can't speak for the rest of Greenland) and should be able to withdraw DKK whilst in Greenland at the ATM. Hope this helps - don't hesitate to ask for more tips!
