Although we don't know exactly what happened, if your assumptions are correct then I agree with you James. If I were the taxi driver I would be kicking myself for getting into a situation where a L driver could run into me just by taking a wide line on the corner. I wouldn't go so far as to say that both are equally liable unless the taxi driver did something negligent, but I'd have to give the taxi driver 25% of the blame. A good driver should know better than ever getting into this situation.
I call it giving slip and sliding space. I wouldn't go beside any driver regardless of learner or not. Plus after the roundabout i have all the time after to pass if i want or go you know what im pulling back left . Not that i teach but would say mind ti keep in your lane we have someone next to us. Little question if the learner is starting in thier mirrors and not glancing at their lane to keep in it can they end up drifting into the other lane. So again the instructor should be making sure the don't come out. While the taxi should know better
If all drivers scanned their mirrors more, got to keep your eyes peeled! Toyota prius taxis are something to stay well clear of.
I don't put myself alongside anyone in a roundabout, let alone a learner.
