Adapt Your Driving!!
Driving on mud and ice leads to many incidents in my area,
Far too many people on the roads don't adapt their driving to the conditions.
Habits formed in good weather creep into winter and now you have a real problem.

It’s a roundabout mate!
Pulled over by the police and given 3 points?!?!? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 You forget, there are NO police!!!!!!
I have been driving since the late 60's. The only thing to change has been the increase in population. Peoples' behaviour has not changed, there are now more road users, so we see more of the different behaviours. Hopefully thanks to your channel, and similar channels, we will see an improvement in patience, kindness and skill. Thanks for the videos.
I am a firm beleaver that people should have to take a driving test every 5 years for free if you pass. I am a welder and have to undertake about 30 weld tests every 2 years to prove my competence, and i dont see how it can be different driving a 1.5 + tone weapon. Very good video and very informative
Just the other day I heard a podcast with two (former) dutch police officers in which one of them stated that it is proven that skid courses doesn't necessarily improve road safety, or are probably making it worse, because people who took them think they are okay, because they know what to do when things go wrong. Like you, they said that's the wrong attitude, because before you come into an emergency situation you made one or probably several mistakes upfront. Skid courses that focuses more on skidding prevention seem to have no negative impact on road safety.
Good video. There is a noticeable drop in standards since I began driving in 1981. Lane discipline, and as you illustrate, joining from a slip road. The joining driver needs to speed-match to the inside lane and slot in to a gap. This rarely happens. And as for lane discipline - it is terrible, with drivers hogging lanes, forcing others to undertake on the inside. Part of the problem may be the distractions for the driver in modern cars - everything on screens, plus (this may be controversial) the increasing number of drivers who come from parts of the world or from cultures where there are endemically poor driving standards and a lack of adherence to rules.
Thanks for this explanation. This interpretation of the rules makes sense to me. I’m not convinced the new rules have made pedestrians safer. Giving way can lead to pedestrians dashing across without checking other directions as you gave an example of. Also if you are turning left into a side road and there is a car turning right into a side road often the car turning right will assume you are letting them go rather than giving priority to a pedestrian waiting to cross. Any tine there are other cars involved just seems more dangerous
Thank you that was a good video ,could i suggest talking about the elderly giving up driving before they are forced to do it ,,i stopped ar 67 years old because of leg problems and pain whilst driving long distances .
Signs and road markings are so inconsistently incorrect!
There is a roundabout near me with a definite left turn at 9 o’clock and a definite right turn at 3 oclock like at 16:35 in this video yet the road markings have two lanes with straight arrows yet there is no straight on.
That Ipswich roundabout I would use the right hand lane with a right signal! It’s past 12 o’clock and whether it’s a continuation of the previous road you should definitely not treat it like a bend! It’s pretty box standard, why confuse the issue
You can’t have two left exits! The second exit would be an “intermediate “ exit (basically straight! )
No mirror usage, no proper signal use and I've even seen people driving off with no hands on the wheel or checking their phone. It's appalling! If I'm in a car with someone and they start putting on their seatbelt as they just start moving I'm questioning their driving ability.
No matter what the rules say if it doesn't seem logical or safe I'm not doing it. The problem I have with these new rules is that they are in some way forcing drivers to neglect safety to follow the rule and reason for the problem is you have people who don't have a clue writing the rules.
The source of how these are charged. Road Traffic Act 1988 section 38 part 7. Basically says that while the Highway Code isn't law. Breaking any Highway Code rule, can be used in legal proceedings, to establish liability, under any of the Traffic Acts. So breaking any Highway Code Should rules, leaves you open to a charge under the Road Traffic Act 1988 section 3, Careless Driving. Defined as a driver who has driven below the standard of a Competent and Careful driver. The Highway Code defining what would be Competent and Careful.
Another reason that people do it is because we have largely handed over policing of our roads to automated camera systems, there aren't many police on our roads so not enough people are being prosecuted for their careless driving. If lane hoggers were dealt with then overtaking on the left would largely disappear. It is interesting that Rule 268 doesn't actually say slow moving traffic, it only references "adjacent lanes moving at similar speeds", and so far as I can see there is no definition of "Congested conditions" in the Highway Code. With the introduction of smart motorways, it is quite common to see 3 lanes of traffic moving at 40/50 with large numbers of cars in each lane. Does this meet the criteria for "Congested Conditions" as it does seem to meet the conditions for "adjacent lanes moving at similar speeds", but I wouldn't say it was "slow moving".
Another good video thanks. Unfortunately it seems to me that in London very few people have learnt when a car is turning into a minor road, the pedestrian crossing that minor road has priority!
"There gonna name the baby Rodney, after Dave" 😂
I think all drive-throughs should be removed, it is the ultimate in pure laziness! That's my opinion! By the way, the official maximum stupidity level 5+ is "EEyoooooooo perr- lonka!" You have a pair of utterly sweet, smart and precious little angels there, James - you are a great dad! I watch your videos as well as Ashley Neal and Conquer driving, even though I have been driving for 40 years now. I work as a class 1 and 2 HGV driver doing general haulage, which I prefer as it is more varied and challenging sometimes - don't ask me why! I find your's and their advice and tips to be invaluable, as road and traffic conditions these days are a far cry from 30 - 40 years ago, when there was so much less traffic, we had smooth roads with bright white lines and catseyes. It's important to keep up to date and share advice.
@@JamesSimpkinsADI. What have you got to say about the specific offence of overtaking on the left was removed from thr Statute Book with the introduction to the 1972 Road Traffic Act ? You haven't mentioned it once on all your videos on undertaking!
Some skids do just happen. How do you explain black ice. Doesnt matter how experienced you are its not always possible to see it.
some drivers?? see the L plate as reason to overtake as soon as possible.
Landrover drivers - I've got a Landrover - It's an off-roader - it can cope with my driving in any conditions no matter what I throw at it. Utter morons.
If it's possible for you to offer your learners a session at a skidpad, then please do. It's mandatory when getting your license here in Norway, and not only is it an excellent learning experience, it's actually great fun.
Unofficially we used ws big empty car park.
@@wrightwoodwork The session at the skidpad is not about sliding the car around, but about learning how to do evasive manoeuvres in slippery conditions, how to modulate braking, how to catch a skid and not overcorrect, how to handle unpredictable situations like an animal suddenly walking into the road, etc. etc. All on a closed, safe track built solely for that purpose. Youngsters skidding around a car park don't come close to learning the same type of lessons.
@@hadtopicausername That is true ... but a car park is better than nothing. Just need to beware of obstacles such as kerbs hidden in the snow.
This morning when i went out to the van to go to work . The road looked like it was covered in diamonds. Ok its icy nerd to be gentle with everything. Out onto the msin road i csn still see the rosd sparkling ok the roads are not gritted simply drive smooth and no hsrsh anything . Be at a speed if something does go wromg i csn control it
Riding motorbikes for 55 years, the first 25 before the use of ABS on bikes, is the perfect way to learn how to, or how not to, brake whilst cornering. 😉
People don't understand the momentum a vehicle carries, and that the vehicle wants to keep going in a straight line (Newton's first law and all that). The tyres gently persuade the change of course, that's all. It's that same momentum that makes cars flip, the energy has to go somewhere, the best we can do is guide it.
SOME people don't understand
Slowing down and stopping to let cars out of minor junctions or slip roads. I bet that one you saw was someone slowing down to let them in and that person stopping as well, then everyone just plows into the back. See it at Kettering on A14 a6N junction all the time
The modern car with ABS and all the other trickery that pretty much drives the car for you is a wonderful thing but cannot create an impossible amount of grip. When I started driving cars after a few years of motorcycles I already had an understanding of roadcraft having studied the information available. My car driving instructor was of the same mind as yourself and taught me way above the basic requirements to pass a test. Here in rural Cornwall I manage to get around in a twenty year old non ABS micra without any drama, maybe I’m just lucky but in 50 years of driving haven’t yet had to claim on insurance.
So true the thing is once you have gone past the point of many saftey systems you are going so much faster than years ago when they didn't exist
People who can't read roadsigns and follow reasonable behaviour for simple, everyday hazards also can't understand how a car behaves and adapt for slippery conditions. Whodathunkit?
my father taught me - Accelerate after the bend - Brake before the bend - Coast around the bend -- (hold speed around the bend really) ABC
So many people - TOO MANY people - think that they have a right to drive how they like and if they come a cropper they're just unlucky. Pushing up insurance prices for the rest of us. Yeah, we're the ones bankrolling these incompetent morons. Most crashes have the same cause; vehicle velocity exceeded driver's ability. No-one in a single vehicle incident crashes because they're unlucky, they crash because they aren't very good.
I drive blue light ambulances and see appalling driving on a daily basis. I can follow people for miles before they see me. They'll pull out in front of me on A roads, then become an obstruction. They'll overtake slow-moving vehicles as I'm coming down a dual carriageway at 90mph and cause me to slow. They'll keep driving at 60mph towards me even when I'm pull offside and asking them to give way. They'll overtake cars who have pulled over for me even at night when the whole road and inside of their car is illuminated blue. I would have a collision most days if it wasn't for my anticipation of peoples stupid, thoughtless, or dangerous actions. I think the biggest problem is that most people have no association between poor driving and the massive impact it could have on your life if it goes wrong.
Inexperience, most drivers don't get a lot of practice at driving on snow and ice. Impatience, probably the biggest cause of all incidents. Too much faith in a bit of grit that is often not spread on some minor roads.
"either inexperienced, a plumb or both", could be wrong tyre pressures or a blow out, could be the electronic stability management has intervened or traction control has activated when the vehicle would still make it (like how i am confident my van would have gotten through the flood water from my experience below). a car can be rolled at 20mph, once a vehicle is off the road on that corner the grass goes down hill, looks like the first vehicle has slid off the road and used the tree as a ramp to roll over, could be another vehicle has high beemed them and dazzled the driver or been on the wrong side of the road and drove off. there is too many could be's to put it down to just inexperience or them driving too fast and being silly although they are a common reason used. traction control coming on in a car or van can lead to a crash. i know this because it happened to me in august 2019, my van entered flood water, 3/4s the way through the 20meter long flood water the traction control come on, the rear aquaplaned and the van went left, hit a wall and rolled on its side. there was no weight in the back of the van that i would usually have like tools. the full story of my incident is that day it rained heavy for a short period of time in the afternoon, which made the flood water as the drain was clogged with tree branches and leaves. i was driving at 10pm at night, going home from Crieff where my brother stays, i had dropped materials at his house for renovation work and stayed for dinner. as i drove down the road, i had noticed small puddles of water maybe a meter wide and long at the side of the road as i approached the village of Braco, i could see the white lines at the side of the road go into and out of these puddles. but there was no more information that big flood water was ahead. when i went round the last corner before Braco, they had rechipped the road weeks before but had not applied the road markings and lines, trees over hanged the road, it was dark, i was doing 40mph which was slower than i usually did for that road, i was expecting small puddles at the side of the road. i went round the bend, started to go down the hill, and at the point i felt it was safe to apply throttle, i went into the flood water as it was like glass and matched the road as it was black, no road markings to help me see there was water there which i didnt realise i relied on in my driving until i borrowed my brothers car a week later and noticed how much lines going into puddles is so useful to me to notice water. i held the steering wheel gently to keep it straight, i took my feet off the pedals (as i knew not to hit the brakes) and the van (a mk7 ford transit) was making its way through ok and would have but then the traction control flashed on the dash, back lifted immediately. the road was like a bath tub shape, although down hill a little it was enough to catch the water. even the police officer that was 5minutes behind me to come down and shut the road as getting from braco to the A9 was all flooded said he didnt know it flooded that badly where i crashed and might have been caught out. i walked away from it, i entered at 40mph but the speed was reducing in the water before impact. i gained a new respect for water on the road as well as ice and snow. while sitting in the police car, a bmw come round the corner at speed and did a all wheel lock up to stop in time once seen the blue lights of the police car, pulled up to the window and asked if its possible to get through, the police officer said "can you not see the van on its side? no, its too flooded, find another way". i passed my test in 2005, car and motorbike, my dad was an advanced driving instructor in the army in the 70s and for BSM in the 80s, he taught me to drive and from the age of 10 has been teaching me road craft and advanced driving. one thing my dad would sa a lot is "a driving licence is a licence to learn more". by making a misjudgment i have learned more and still aiming to improve my driving in the future.
You don't mention how deep it was or if there was any flow but it sounds to me more like you were floating than aquaplaning. I've felt the back end of my Yeti get very light when crawling through water deeper than I should have been attempting...
You can't park it there mate! 😁
@@Veni_Vidi_Vortice 😂😂😂
Yes, it's not the roads that are treacherous, it's the muppet zombies that use it!
Its the Dunning Kruger Effect in action in which poor performers overestimate their abilities. People pass a basic driving test and then from limited experience onwards they are suddenly the best driver in the world. With no additional training they are suddenly sports drivers. I see it every day. I spot a hazard and will hold back. Others will just charge ahead willy-nilly. I call these type of drivers "The base model with fake M badges"
Thanks for this video James. I drive like you and adapt my driving to the conditions. Unfortunately, others will bully me for it! There's a road near me which is NSL but only for 100yds,then it goes to 40mph. In 1°C or less I will do maybe 35mph all the way down but I've been flashed at, bibbed at, crazily overtaken and tailgated. Even in normal conditions that road is terrible for bullying, and not aimed at just me. I avoid it for this reason and I'll put 5 minutes on my journey to not drive it. Honestly, it puts so many people in danger not just them, it's very disheartening. It's not like locals don't know how many accidents happen there either.
People are in too much of a rush these days.
" Planning, thinking, looking. "........are you sure your a driving instructor......? Back in my day MSM, stood for Mirror,Signal Manoeuvre.!
As I understand it, the horn should only be used to alert other road users of danger, or in an attempt to avert danger. Which then leads me to ask: Does an inattentive driver who doesn't notice lights changing, constitute a (big enough) danger? I mean, you're supposed to pay attention to traffic and your surroundings even when at a standstill, and inattention is generally a bad thing when behind the wheel. But then again, there are limits to how much damage you can do while standing still. If I were in that situation and noticed in my mirror a car approaching from behind that wasn't showing signs of slowing down properly, I would definitely honk. If there's no risk of being rear-ended, then I'll probably just wait for someone else to honk instead.
I pretty much never place my car alongside someone else in a roundabout. It's just not worth the risk.
Great tip. The lack of lane discipline and correct anticipation and procedure are major causes of driving issues and anything that helps a road user orientate themselves and indicate their intentions to others can only help, in my opinion.
Brilliant video. At last someone has said it. 😊
There's a roundabout on the A413 near Gt Missenden that has hedges blocking the view ahead, but it's so small that when people are coming round turning right, you can sometimes have barely a second to react. When you have to stop at the line, it feels dangerous because you really have to get your foot down to accelerate out of the way of drivers who might be coming but you can't see yet. It's an example of copying good theory but applying it to the wrong situation!
Is it acceptable to sound the horn behind a lane hogger to alert them to your presence? Thank you in advance.
I draw a difference. Driving and 'operating a vehicle' are two different things.
Video changes nothing - noise
Heard from a friend the government are giving free lessons and license to immigrants. He said its an absolute nightmare, language barrier etc. The gov pays for a big block of lessons for them, some dont turn up so its easy money.
