About a year ago, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey had a meeting with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. During this meeting, Feige suggested that RDJ could return to the MCU. Feige also mentioned Dr. Doom to RDJ.
Feige said he kept thinking that if RDJ were to come back, and Susan asked, "Wait, wait, what does coming back mean?" Feige then discussed how to avoid going backwards, not disappointing expectations, and how to exceed expectations. Then Kevin Feige dropped the name Dr. Doom. RDJ looked into the character of Dr. Doom, and then Kevin Feige said, "Let's get Victor Von Doom right."
RDJ was already scheduled to meet Disney CEO Bob Iger for another matter. When he met Iger, he found out that Iger was also aware of the Dr. Doom idea. Iger told RDJ that he liked the idea.
RDJ mentioned that what was happening exceeded his expectations. He then accepted the role, as he announced at SDCC, saying, “New mask. Same task. Boy, I tell you, I like playing complicated characters.”
