The overword criticism is something that i never noticed until you said it, and now it has become one of my biggest criticisms against some hacks and praises to others
Darkfire looks interesting. Maybe I've just been spoiled too much by all the great fangames out there, but its kinda hard to excite with romhacks most of the time - they all just feel so limited. Kinda hard to go back once you've muscled through something like Empire or Tectonic....or Vanguard *wink wink*.
I think romhacks and fangames are meant to be consumed differently. It's easy to find a GBA emulator on mobile, so you can play the game during a lunch break at work, in the car, etc. Fangames are more meant to be played on PC (I know Joiplay is a thing). So yeah fangames to actually play ambitious games and romhacks to kill time, both are great !
@@ayrei1503 Funnily enough, Odyssey and Skyblue uses binary, but yeah, so glad to see that the scene is finally back. I also recommend checking out the Gen 4/5 Pokemon romhacking scene, there are some good projects there that have been cooking.
I love how this channel isn’t trying to be bias and saying X romhack is amazing and then most of them are some what similar in ways this makes me hopeful people can be honest about what romhack they like and don’t like so people can enjoy watch like me as it suck seeing the same list over and over but that’s just me I can’t wait to see what your romhack is going to end up as you seem more interested into making something new then staying with the regular format
Thank you for the kind words! I don't want to tell someone a 7/10 hack is the best thing ever, then they just waste their time playing something they might not enjoy. But I still think those 7/10 hacks are worth playing, so I'll highlight what's good and bad about them, so the audience it gets can help it improve.
I heavily agree with you as people can have opinions and interest and give constructive criticism about what they like and don’t like so long as it can help make the game grow and not be destructive criticism that might make the creator overwhelmed and yeah you can’t make EVERYONE happy but I think making your game a nice balance between casual and challenging is going to make some people happy and as someone who just watches romhack to see what they do and for fun of it most video comes of as just “here challenging rom hack video here for only pro only” or something along the lines like that but that might be a me issues from just me watching to many romhack that end up like that or whatever I want to see creators enjoy games while also being challenging but also fun for the viewers to watch so they can play it without having to worry about being bad for setting their game to easy or whatever difficulty they choose. Im also kinda excited about that one Switch mod that got pretty good 3D animation or other stuff but I worry that all they got (Aka TheYisusOne romhack) but I’m sure we might see 3D romhack in the far far future but yeah let’s see where next year goes!!!
Darkfire is what I'm looking for! I just need a better overworld to look at other then the same regions over and over again. And the colors are just so vibrant.
I've never played romhacks but this makes me want to! What would you recommend if I'm picking romhacks from any year? The ones in the video look super good and interesting, but I'm curious about older ones as well Edit: I just saw you posted a video a few days ago that cover this question specifically, I'll go watch it!!!!
I've been finding romhacks for quite a while so I played pokemon unbound despite the "overrated" criticisms I had seen. Ngl I'm currently enjoying it but I'm worried that once I finished it I wouldn't be able to find ROM hacks that sound intriguing (my phone is not that good in quality and can't handle most of the fanmade Pokemon games that I want to play) Thanks to you I've got 2 more rom hacks to play (Pokemon Darkfire and Pokemon Odyssey) You are a grateful help in feeding my boredom with intriguing ROM hacks!
Ive really appreciated your reviews. They have been different from what I've typically seen and my list of pokemkn games I've been playing has grown. By the way loving Vanguard I'm especially chuckled because the name of the main female protagonist is my name just missing one letter at the end haha. Its definitely a whirl to see my name in something 😅
I had already played the english translation of that spanish hack and although it has some glaring translation issues (I speak both languages to understand exactly where something went into an unclear direction when comparing to the original), the game is still amazing and shouldn't be outshined by a similarly great old hack. Y'all should really give it a try. Nevermind, just bombard your devices with those hacks because holy shit, the scene's growing a lot
Yo. I have done half a project of an upgraded Johto region, where you go across from Cherrygrove to Azalea, and a few more changes. Gym order changes, different leaders etc
I've been having so much fun playing Pokemon Odyssey! i feel like its because a lot of mechanics were taken from the gsme it was inspired by (etrian odyssey) and ive come to believe that borrowing mechanics from other games is a nice way to spice up your hack. since it plays a bit like EO you spend most of your time tweaking your team with EV editors acting as an easy pseudo skill point system.
Darkfire old beta was already quite good and the most recent was such a great upgrade, I really enjoyed this one and even got a shiny Eevee as starter.
Team rocket edition is the #1 for me… Playing it was so freaking refreshing. Leaving the same boring routine that every hack room has… I love being the “bad guy” for once lol
This might be a bit gauche, but I'd love to hear your opinion of my fangame Pokemon Roam! It's got 2 gyms so far, about 10+ hours of content depending on how much side stuff you do
I’m just after a main game rom hack where I can play in the over world with my gf, she’s never played a main story game before and I’m just tryna see if anyone has made one. We played pokemmo but the story is hard and I feel a lot of it is pay to win.
The Team Rocket Edition you mention here is fun but the translation is just so freaking awful and broken that it completely turned me off from making it further than I did. I’m surprised that wasn’t a criticism you brought up.
seems like decent games....i just wish they were all completed, i dont like starting a game and not being able to finish it....but Scorched Silver seems fun
I'm super happy to see Scorched Silver so high up, the game definitely deserves it after handling everything it had so well. I personally was a huge fan to see the directions they went with what a Johto region, 20 years after, would look. From seeing the new E4 members, to seeing Gold be the same as our player character, but open up more in his adulthood and telling us how we'll at one point manage to overcome our shyness was a really good way to handle bringing back the old protagonist. I also really like the way they handled Silver in this game, there are a lot of games where they bring Silver, specifically back, Prism, Glazed, Xenoverse, but I feel like Scorched Silver is the second best at doing that, just a tad behind Xenoverse due to Xenoverse's handling of Silver in my eyes is almost unbeatable.
I'm glad you make a clear distinction between ROM hacks and fan games. thank you It makes all the difference if I can play it on my steam deck or not (the latter being a coin toss)
Team rocket edition is pretty good but it isn't perfect. Some of the dialogue is badly translated and sounds like they used Google translate for the whole thing.
Thank you so much for these videos! I love learning about new fan games an ROM hacks. Would totally love to see a top 5 ROM hacks and a top five fan games that include non-binary protagonist options. I know that a lot of people don't think that inclusion is necessary but for those of us who do identify as non-binary it means the world to have the option and I would love for those games to get the spotlight shine on them ( especially any ROM hacks because I find a decent amout a fan games that include the option but I've only found I think one rom hack that does something like that and I would totally love to find more!)
Wait, you're telling me a pokemon rom hack doesn't include every new current gen mon?! Well that's a rarity! Can't tell ya how sick I got of every rom that gets talked about being "up to date" with every generation pokemon and type. If I wanted to have those things I would play the current game's, not the older generation games. I play older games because they were their own thing during their life span. Don't give me "pokemon Colosseum, future time traveling fake robot pokemon adition, + new type from gamefreak/made up". A personal pet peave. (Also, yes, I think a robot from the future being paraded around as the "monster" you're supposed to treat as though it belonged to the series is pretty stupid. The point of pokemon is that they're animals that can be believed exist in this made up world, inhabiting environments that are uniquely suited for their existence. Not whatever gamefreak is thinking, because at this point ya might as well start calling this Digimon)
Damn Pokemon Team Rocket Edition is the No 1 Rom Hack and I really don't know why it's in No 5 in your list just because lack of graphic or not well translated man enjoy the complete different story instead of bothering about those tiny stuffs.
