I love in Portland and visit LA and Long Beach about 4-5 times a year. Long Beach is easily one of my favorite parts of the LA metro -- it's extremely dense, walkable, diverse, and close to the water. Easily one of the most liveable areas in southern California.
Yessir, I wholly concur with your assessment. I like to think if it as the "poor man's access to beach living." lol And that not a knock on long beach. It's just that beach life to the north (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Santa Monica, etc) and beach life to the south (Huntington, Newport, Sana Point, etc) are so ridiculously expensive...
@@privacy43285 nailed it! Been working in signal hill for 6 Years in the morning after a weather system clears the air.... really pretty! Also I'm almost certain his skyline footage was old and like 1 or 2 skyscrapers was missing
This is one of the most interesting ones yet! I knew of Long Beach, and it's approximate population, and I've seen parts of the downtown in pictures, the Queen Mary (which I really want to go to someday), etc. But it really is an overlooked city!
Disney tried to build a theme park around the Queen Mary (they owned it at the time) but financial issues, opposition from locals, and competition with Anaheim (where Disneyland is located) lead to the project being cancelled, but the theme was reused in Japan in 2001.
QM area is a dump. City does not take care of the area at all. Lots of crime in downtown. LGBT flags and propaganda everywhere. so much so you would think it is San Fran Castro District. City Leaders have let it turn to grime.
@@him31anshu yes it is costly nowadays. When I was living there, of course it wasn’t so high. I tried getting a room at the Westin on Ocean Blvd a couple years back and the woman wanted a $200 deposit plus $200 for one night’s stay. So make sure you bring some extra cash. The living costs depends on the area you’re in. Of course the homes closest to the beach are higher, but some apartments I’ve seen go for about $1,400 for a one bedroom. I highly suggest you and your family/friends eat at Tequila Jack’s near the beach. You will love it!!! They’re kinda high, but it’s worth it.
@@jazmynbrown6820 Thanks for the information. $200 for a night is too high really. I should try to look a little far from the beach AirBnB something. It's actually a work trip for 7 days.
I love Long Beach! Super interesting I had no idea how big the ports were or about the ship hotel...and I agree with you about its skyline. You should do a video on DC. It has a spectacular skyline! I am a native and could give you some super interesting historical info and interesting facts for your video. :) I also sent ya an email. Thanks for your content!
I live in Long Beach back in 2016 for a whole year and I hope that someday I can go back. I had a wonderful time there. There’s a lot of diversity in everything and everywhere, the views are beautiful. My favorite place was Shoreline and the beach in the Alamitos area. Back then I was also a T-shirt you know elementary school so I can say that I also had a good experience when it comes to the education system in Long Beach. It’s a place to visit for sure, and to have in a bucket list when it comes to the United States.
The news stations in Los Angeles use our beautiful city as a back drop and there is a fixed web cam that gets used to check in comming weather...the skyline is world class...I think
It’s fascinating how different each California skyline can be. Even the big three, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego skylines appear vastly different to me. San Francisco has that tight almost east coast skyscraper density while the other two have that more open western look. Los Angeles is so tall compared to San Diego. Long Beach, Fresno, Sacramento and San Jose’ all have a smaller skyline but each are again so different. San Jose hardly has a skyline at all. Why? It is one of the largest cities in the U.S. For this video, I like the Long Beach harbor and those fascinating camouflage islands. 😎🥇
Planes flying into SJC often fly through downtown, so there's a limit to how high companies can build their buildings! Hence the short skyscrapers in downtown San Jose :)
@@BradThePitts Oh that probably explains some of the misinformation as well. I used to work at the Queen Mary in the early 2000's, there wasn't anything in that dome, but some random junk or chairs or something. I was mostly empty. Then they remodeled it when Carnival Cruise first came over there.
Long Beach is somewhat of a bridge city between the LA metro and the Orange County beach cities. Making it an awesome place with convenient access to everything in so cal
I've got a real soft spot for Long Beach, was introduced to the band Sublime as a teenager by my cousin who lives there. The band was from Long Beach. Oh and yes was taken their to see the Spruce Goose by my dad who was an airline pilot at the time.
Vincent Thomas bridge is in San Pedro & the Spruce Goose was moved to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. There are still active oil pump jacks up in Signal Hill
I don't live in Long Beach, but in a neighboring city, and have spent tons of time here. Went to CSULB, too. Loved the video, and especially the drone footage, but I couldn't help but wonder if you got permission to use the drone less than 5 miles from Long Beach Airport. Haha.
It’s a great video about former neighbors of mine, I lived in San Pedro for ten years (it’s mostly pronounced Pee-Dro) and yes, the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro is the inspiration for the suspension bridge in GTA V.
I'm new to San Pedro and went exploring yesterday. Took a walk from 8th & Center to the Catalina Express terminal. It was cool seeing the foot of the bridge and passing by the USS Iowa and cruise ships
A most unusual area. Does the city preserve its oil heritage or is it "we don't talk about this"? I would like to think they have preserved and celebrate it, especially if they have the Queen Mary, the Spruce Goose dome, and an almost 90 year tradition: racing a Grand Prix circuit. Heck, it looks like Radiator Springs with a lot of money and a coastline. And that's a great thing.
You should do Austin, Texas next. Why? In Austin, there are at least 57 projects over 300'. Of those, 21 are at least 500', 13 are over 600', 5 are over 700', and 1 is over 1,000’ Austin’s skyline will look unrecognizable in 5 years
The biggest disadvantage to Long Beach, is it's biggest strength; the LA river and the shipping port. Without it, it's waves and waters would be pristine.
Depends on where you at but the city has become suburban and more nice now even the east side of long beach is not as ghetto and bad as it use to be is it still dangerous of course like every other city it has it's problems but the city improve so much in the last 15 years.
