Every bottle of wine in Australia tells you how many standard drinks are in it based on the alcohol volume. In the USA not a single bar I went to poured a standard drink. A lot of my American friends would think they were under the limit because they thought they’d only had one glass but the glass of wine they’d been poured was easily two standard drinks.
Australia a country for some reason Americans think Britain is a country they need to mention what country there talking about in uk as there all different lol as u know all countries are different to eachother lol
@@peterweaver7596Actually the line is not a standard drink. The standard drink for wine is 100mls. A very small glass of wine is 120mls, but most glasses are served at 150mls. No pub or bar in Australia serves standard drinks of wine. Most pubs serve schooners as the default glass of beer, when I was in my 30s it was a middie. It is really important to know this as a lot of people are picked up over the limit because they think pubs/bars serve standard drinks.
@@brontewcat a standard drink is by alcohol volume translated to millimetres so 13.5% red wine is 100ml. Red wine typically varies from 11% to 14.5% so you have to adjust up or down depending on the wine. How quickly alcohol is absorbed is impacted by numerous factors which is why they no longer teach the one drink per hour rule I was taught in my youth. I don’t drive and I don’t drink that often so I’d love to go to the pubs and restaurants where you’re getting served large pours. In this economy if I’m buying a drink I’d appreciate the extra amount.
RBT is Australia's best game show 🤣 you're always trying to guess what BAC they are going to blow. Always at the end of the show they will say what the consequences are to the drivers so you'll just have to watch till the end 😁 Love your videos, hi from Australia
Ah! The Cherry Ripe defence used to be a thing because it has (or had) alcohol in the dark chocolate bar. I'm pretty sure someone got off a drink driving charge because they proved they had just eaten one because they still had the wrapper in the car. If I remember correctly, Cadbury reduced the amount of alcohol in the chocolate bar to avoid further problems.
Back in the day the Cadbury old gold range of chocolate, (dark chocolate range) including cherry ripe and old Jamaica (rum and raisin) would actually create a reading on the breatho. Never actually heard of anyone getting a reading above .05 from it though lol
Although I did not realise it at the time I failed a breath test because i used breath freshener about five minutes before being tested. If I had known the breath freshener was 4% alcohol then i would have asked for a blood test. I got the distinct impression that the sargeant running the booze bus thought i was not impaired at all (from what came out in court).
100% true. I have had my fair share of run-in’s with the law… both on the road and off, and can say that, categorically, the cops were always in the right and always treated me well. I suspect that a lot of those who have horror stories about Aussie police were probably the authors of those outcomes themselves. Police treat you the way you treat them. If you are an ar$eh01e to them you can expect them to respond in kind.
I got pulled up twice within 15 mins by the same RBT once. I got pulled over the first time on my way home from a local shop, all clear, continued on, realised I'd left a bag of my shopping at the shop so went back to get it, on the way home again they pulled me up again. Only after the cop with breathalyser in hand approached my window they realised they'd already checked me. I told them it was so much fun the first time I wanted to do it again. Because they had pulled me up they had to breathalyse me again, so jokes about how much booze I could have consumed within that 15 min window came out thick and fast. So long as you haven't been drinking or doing drugs, it takes about 2 minutes and you're on your way again, and the cops are friendly and fair and good for a laugh so long as you are too. If you have been drinking or drugging, you shouldn't be driving and everyone knows it so it's your own fault if you get busted.
LOL at this! The first time I was pulled over I said to the cop "wow this is exciting! I haven't done this before" and he looked at me as if I was crazy. I don't do drugs or booze, so I was all clear, but I think he was wondering about me!
That was a great explanation in the beginning of the vid, how the US DUI detection works. In Aus you are almost always tested for DUI first, regardless of the reason you are pulled over. And yeah, you can be pulled over anywhere at any time, for the specific test of a DUI. They do them all the time. Even if the person was driving properly. It's very much a stealth tactic, to catch anyone. Because DUI drives can still keep to the speed limit, and keep the car in the lane. So at any given moment, you could be driving next to a drunk person, and have no idea.
There is random breath testing here in NZ too. Sometimes they set up in the morning to catch people who are going to work but were drinking the night before and might not realise or think they could be still under the influence.
Yea they do it in Vic as well. Most people think having a sleep will sober them up but sadly that's not the case. Have known a lot of people lose their licence from it. It's really sad one lost his job then his whole life fell apart. He had a 5 bedroom house and is now in a bed sitter. All from driving the next morning
Yea go on JPS, watch the rest. You’re loving it. And your reaction is hilarious. Generally it’s a fine and then if it’s seriously over, a fine and loss of licence for 6 months or more and then if it’s really bad you can face jail time on top.
My brother has been caught so many times being right over the limit and never had jail time. He only had a device attached to his steering wheel which he had to blow into before he could drive. He's been so lucky.
several years back one was set up between my work and the parts shop it was the last day of the year before christmas holidays. By the end of the day and going backwards and forwards getting parts urgently needed for customers cars and get them done for the holidays, tevery single copper in the line up all knew me all too well and would just laugh at me as i slowly pulled up in my company van with its full signage. After my tenth test they wouldn't bother testing me again and we would have a funny chat while waiting for everyone else to get tested and get out of the way so i could continue on. I still got caught 5 more times in the line up before they specifically told the guy waving everyone in to pay more attention and not to wave me in again.
Driving from Newport to Anaheim via Huntington and I was at a place called Westminster where 2 lanes were shut down and the police were pulling over 5 or so cars at a time and directing them into the spare lanes. When I told my buddy, he said that it was happening a bit. Maybe, RBT's are being introduced over there and it's up to each State to choose?
I went through an RBT after church (no communion wine either), still had to blow into the test unit. Also been pulled over after afternoon tea @ my late MIL’s house, still blew in the test unit obviously was 0.00. I joked I’d drunk too many cups of tea. Part 2 would be great 👍🏻
There's another one called Highway Patrol that had some funny bits every now and then. Its most famous one is 'just waiting for a mate', that became a meme

In Australia every life has value, one idiot on drugs and/or drugs can ruin many lives through one thoughtless decision! RBT, means respect our community! 🫂 Our police are fair, make judgement calls based on actual experience, and frequently offer counselling and life choice support too! 🤔 Yes, more please, I'm laughing too! 🤗👍
And that’s part of the reason the US has such a high fatality rate. In the US it’s considered an infringement on individual rights to test a random driver for drugs or alcohol. In Australia we consider it an infringement on everyone’s rights to drive pissed or drug-fucked. If you choose to drive then you are submitting to being stopped by the police to enforce road laws.
Former breath analysis operator here. As you've seen, our laws are different, if you drive on a public street, you have a liability to submit to a RBT, we don't need a belief of intoxication. You are normally charged with the offence of exceeding 0.05%. If you are clearly impaired (all over the road etc), you can be charged with DUI, which is a higher level. Penalties are mandated within certain ranges. A first offence under 0.1% used to be 3 months disqualified and around $300 - but it varies between states. Subsequent offences are higher fines. Third offence or driving whilst disqualified might be a jail sentence. Most states can issue an infringement notice for low level offending. Drugs don't require a threshold, if it's present, it's an offence - but there is more science around alcohol and impairment. There are some great graphs showing the reduction in the road toll when RBT's were introduced.
Hi Joel, great video. A good video is reviewing the show Bondi rescue, it’s lifeguards patrolling the beach on a daily basis and swimming between flags on the beach
If you watch the entire episode, they answer all your questions, at the end of every episode. You will, find out, the resolution of each case, shown in the episode. All the things you wonder about (jail time, fines, loss of license for a period of time, loss of license points, e5c), yes, these are all possibilities.
I remember in the 80s my local pub put a breathalyser on the wall so you could self test before you left the bar My mates and I used to see who could blow the highest reading every Friday night Good times
The question is = How could I self-test when I have not been to your local pub. You explicitly stated "" you could self-test before you left the bar "" That statement is simply FALSE You have yet to learn the English language well enough to provide accurately - truthful articulate descriptions - Are you sure you are sober or simply poorly educated and inarticulate?
I know drink driving is serious ...as an aussie we tend to try and find humor in any situation...we don't mean to offend its just our way of coping....I also love the one liners and try and guess the rbt number, like its a game show 🤣🤣...would love to see part 2.
Some pubs and clubs will have a breath tester on the wall for people to test themselves. This show usually shows and explains what they get charged with at the very end.
Love rbt and highway patrol for a good laugh, keep em coming. In rbt if so eone is caught positive it will usually tell you the consequences. It can be anything feom a fine and demerit points off your licence to suspension of licence to jail time.
This show is awesome! We need to see you do a part two to this video! I’m so happy my home town got a shout out in this episode! Geelong is a great place to live so close to many great beaches and the great ocean road! The booze and drug busses are always around and there’s crazy people driving all the time so I guess that’s why they are always here. I’ve been to the McDonald’s the young tradie drove into many times with my grandma. Great memories going there and then to Kmart to buy toys. Edit: the show is still running, you can tell the new episodes from the old ones by what cars the police are driving.
Here in Victoria, the increase in alcohol and drug testing has been paired with decades of public education by the TAC (Transport Accident Commission) both on TV and by other means. Now if you're at a party or at the pub and are being encouraged to drink, you can just say that you're the designated driver or that you have to drive. Years ago, that was not the case. Everyone knows how many standard drinks (by amount of alcohol) are likely to take you over 0.05 for both men and women. It's taken decades of public education and regulation, but it's seriously cut the road toll.
Absolutely interested in more Aussie trash TV. We have so many of these dramas because they're 1) entertaining and 2) they do a really good job of getting everyone aware of the various 'scary' situations we end up in. Like, getting a brethaliser is way less stressful if you've watched a drama show where they brethalise everyone. We've also got ones for going through airport security and emergency services and a tonne of others.
One New Year I was designated driver and was tested 7 times crossing the bridge between Yarrawonga Victoria and Mulwala NSW in 45 minutes. My 8th trip I produced my own straw and told them I needed 5 minutes to get my breath back from my last test. They let me past and waved me past the rest of the night. 😀
Love Border Security... there's only so many possibilities with RBT, but the variety of stories on BS is amazing - as is the creativity (and, at times, the stupidity) of the public.
even when i havent been drinking i some reason get nervous doing these. Like I had a cop chasing me for like 1km but they were like 300m behind me and i was going through residential streets so had no idea they were after me. they seemed to think i was avoiding them or something. they seemed annoyed.
Hi JPS here in aussie all the state police in aussie are very hard on drink driving and it depends on each states criminal codes as to what these drivers recieve as punishment in court and all drunk drivers do recieve a loss of demerit points from their licence the loss of these points are normally removed from your licence for three years but this does depend on the state.
Usually at the end of the episode they let you know what the outcome (fine, jail time whatever) of all the people that had tested positive or over the limit.
I remember watching this years ago and the idea of not telling you the results straight away is to keep you watching to find out the reading....cherry ripe is a choc bar made with cherries and coconut covered in choc....you see fines and disqualified licences at the end of the show.....so you have to watch the rest....
to keep you tuned in over the ad break, the only thing I hated about these shows is how much was repeated in the same episode, its like they are edited for people with short term memory loss.
Gidday from down under JPS. Can't wait to see your reaction to part 2! Penalties, fines and punishments for those guilty of DUI or under the influence of drugs are mentioned at the end of the show! Keep watching!
we dont buy breathalysers in Australia because people will drive whether they are over the limit or not, so theres no point checking. Aussies love a gamble
Glad you're enjoying it! its nice when a traffic stop ends in the driver and copper laughing together rather than in gun violence. Its amazing to me that the US doesn't have RBTs
A cherry ripe is a dark chocolate bar with morello cherry and coconut, it's delicious but takes a long time to eat because of the desicated coconut. Pretty sure it wouldn't trip off a drug test though.
Bud if you like this you’ll fall in love with police interceptors! The uk version with a lot of chases and action! And very similar humour 🎉😊❤ but rbt is great too of course :)!
I remember watching RBT as a kid and seeing some guy clock a blood alcohol level of something like 0.8. How the fuck he wasn't straight up dead is beyond me.
I have seen some people that handle their alcohol far better than most every day people. Remember on the news many years ago an elderly Egyption man had a fall and went in for xrays and scans to check everything was okay. They were stumped to see and realise the man had 4 kidneys. He commented he had no idea but it explains why he could drink everyone under the table when he was younger and no one stood a chance in beating him in drinking alcohol.
It's relatively common (depending on who you know) that people will have their own breathalyser in their car so they can double check they're below the limit before driving. My dad and all his brothers have one. Most of them are tradies.
A Cherry Ripe is a chocolate and cherry bar, that people say give a positive test for alcohol - not drugs - if you're tested within 15 minutes or so. I've known heavy drinkers to keep a cherry ripe wrapper in the car so they can use it as an excuse if they're pulled over.
RBT can be found anywhere, including on back roads. A family friend was breathalysed after lunch when he was going to his wool shed. A public road runs through the property, and the shed was on the other side of the road to his house. The thing is the road really was off the beaten track, and is really only used by people driving to their farms, not to get to any other town.
Love your attitude to drink/drug driving 👍🏼 BTW when your teaching someone to drive not only the driver need to have a BAC of 0.00 but the instructor as well, when I was teaching my daughter she got pulled over for RBT so we both got tested, it's surprising how many people think that since they're over the limit they can let their child learner driver drive and they'll be ok. From the NSW drivers handbook for alcohol "Penalties can be fines, loss of licence, prison or an alcohol interlock on your vehicle. The penalty depends on how much you’re over the limit and whether it’s a first or repeat offence." Many drugs like MDMA are illegal, so getting caught with those will cause you more problems. There is a variation on this show for each state and there's an NZ version which is quite funny too, it shows pretty much weekly so there will be many hours of this type of entertainment.
As an Aussie we also hate the cliff hanger stage of the show, but it is a great show, unfortunately they usually only get a small fine and maybe a small license suspension depending on how over the limit they are and if they are repeat offenders, keep up the great vids mate 🇦🇺
The annoying thing about a breathalyser is that you must wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking before using one. But it's also good chance to reflect on whether you may have had too much.
Here in Canada if someone sees someone swerving between lanes they will call the police and they will pull you over and give you 3 tests. The walk test and the breathalyzer test. If they find your over the legal limit and you will ve charged DUI and lose your license
Preliminary oral drug tests are followed by evidentiary oral drug tests BUT are also followed by lab tests which occasionally put the EBT on its head. Iirc I think low level drink driving is followed by suspensions and maybe summons, and a temporary driving ban. I think high range drink driving has more felonious repercussions like community service. . Also fun fact Victoria has a hoon legislation such that if you simply massively lose traction or put too many passengers in a car, your vehicle is seized.
They show this program in the U.K. It’s great to watch, and sometimes funny.
You can’t beat the Aussie sense of humour.

It usually tells you at the end of that show, each person that was found guilty and what they received.
LOL no way! The first guy "Just picked me wife up from the Dorset Gardens." He pronounced the Dirty Dorset wrong. That's where I work XD
My thoughts EXACTLY!
You need to watch the classic "I'm just waiting for a mate"
I'm from Geelong and the fact this video came up completely randomly on my home page is an absolute blessing! Great vid man, keen on part 2!
Hi Joel, great video. A good video is reviewing the show Bondi rescue, it’s lifeguards patrolling the beach on a daily basis and swimming between flags on the beach
Yes Bondi Rescue is great!
This was hilarious I love this show too. Our cops are so friendly right?! Gotta watch your cherry ripe intake before driving!
And lime, lemon and BITTERS!
If you watch the entire episode, they answer all your questions, at the end of every episode.
You will, find out, the resolution of each case, shown in the episode.
All the things you wonder about (jail time, fines, loss of license for a period of time, loss of license points, e5c), yes, these are all possibilities.
You should definitely react to Bondi Rescue! It’s a show about Bondi beach in Australia and it’s super funny.
Hi Joel , I enjoyed this video. It's the same in Belgium. We also have random alcohol test (pierre)
I remember in the 80s my local pub put a breathalyser on the wall so you could self test before you left the bar
My mates and I used to see who could blow the highest reading every Friday night
Good times
The question is = How could I self-test when I have not been to your local pub.
You explicitly stated "" you could self-test before you left the bar ""
That statement is simply FALSE
You have yet to learn the English language well enough to provide accurately -
truthful articulate descriptions -
Are you sure you are sober or simply poorly educated and inarticulate?
You need to finish the episode to see the results of the fines etc. They will finish the story of each of the positive results.
I came to ask if the fines are still on at the end, haven't watched RBT in years!

This show is the best ! Yes it is a serious subject but you can’t help but laugh 😂 Yes do Part 2 👌
I enjoy the delight at the cheesy one-liners 😂
Do a part 2 man... I think from memory they usually tell you at the end of show what happened to the people that tested positive.
I think RBT is the main export Australia has. It seems wild the US doesn't have random roadside DUI tests, it's common in NZ and Aus
I know drink driving is serious ...as an aussie we tend to try and find humor in any situation...we don't mean to offend its just our way of coping....I also love the one liners and try and guess the rbt number, like its a game show 🤣🤣...would love to see part 2.
7:50 RBT is a show we Aussies watch to have a laugh so don't worry about laughing lol
RBT is such a great show .Yes please do a Pt 2 😊🇭🇲
Some pubs and clubs will have a breath tester on the wall for people to test themselves. This show usually shows and explains what they get charged with at the very end.
Love rbt and highway patrol for a good laugh, keep em coming. In rbt if so eone is caught positive it will usually tell you the consequences. It can be anything feom a fine and demerit points off your licence to suspension of licence to jail time.
I often watch this and love it. Please show part 2. The repercussions is at the end of the show.
Yea so true
This is NOT trash TV, thank you very much.
You can buy breathalysers here, people probably do have them.
The airport one is called Border Security
One New Year I was designated driver and was tested 7 times crossing the bridge between Yarrawonga Victoria and Mulwala NSW in 45 minutes. My 8th trip I produced my own straw and told them I needed 5 minutes to get my breath back from my last test. They let me past and waved me past the rest of the night. 😀
Should definitely watch more, also our border security show is golden as well.
Love Border Security... there's only so many possibilities with RBT, but the variety of stories on BS is amazing - as is the creativity (and, at times, the stupidity) of the public.
Part 2! Part 2!
I love how into this show you are!
9:10 My favourite part about RBT is guessing the drug users from the drunks. I was instantly like nah this guys more likely to be cooked not drunk.
Alot of Aussies do buy breathalysers to keep in their cars. Quite a few have apps on their phones to keep track of how long to wait before driving.
Definitely part 2 always fun game over here in Australia when we watch it to guess the number over the limit haha
I love RBT and also Highway Patrol. Don’t think I’ve seen this one so definitely show part 2
even when i havent been drinking i some reason get nervous doing these.
Im an Aussie and had to pause... Are you KIDDING ME USA DOESN'T DO THIS.. whattttt.. Saves many many lives.. Ok.. Lol ill unpause now
Their courts found it unconstitutional.
Yes, it is of extreme importance that we get a part 2 for this
That was very entertaining. Yes fit part 2 👍
Hahaha. Glad you enjoyed that one mate.
Part 2 please 😁
Glad you're enjoying it! its nice when a traffic stop ends in the driver and copper laughing together rather than in gun violence. Its amazing to me that the US doesn't have RBTs
To see the repercussions, make a part 2 of the same episode
We can conclude from this that you can't tell when a person is drunk 🤣
A cherry ripe is a dark chocolate bar with morello cherry and coconut, it's delicious but takes a long time to eat because of the desicated coconut. Pretty sure it wouldn't trip off a drug test though.
Are you sure that's desiccated coconut...?
I dunno about that, i can make a cherry ripe disappear depressingly quickly
Eat enough of them before a breath test and it'll register as alcohol though
Now I want a cherry ripe 😂
Won’t trip off alcohol test either
Bud if you like this you’ll fall in love with police interceptors! The uk version with a lot of chases and action! And very similar humour 🎉😊❤ but rbt is great too of course :)!
Pommy TV pure crap
I remember watching RBT as a kid and seeing some guy clock a blood alcohol level of something like 0.8. How the fuck he wasn't straight up dead is beyond me.
He probably had mouth alcohol recorded at 0.8. BAC requires no drinking for a period of time.
Not possible, thats mouth alcohol. Its lethal at .4+
Yes, would love to see part 2 and part 3 😊😊😉😉😎😎
oh wow, that's so scary, America definitely needs to do random breath tests.
Only if what they blow is extremely low
I thought it might have been a slang word term for a crack pipe.
Cherry Ripe, pipe.
@@timglennon6814 No.
Pretty sure Fishermans friend lozenger is the go to for getting you under an old truckie i know swears by them 😃
RBT can be found anywhere, including on back roads. A family friend was breathalysed after lunch when he was going to his wool shed. A public road runs through the property, and the shed was on the other side of the road to his house. The thing is the road really was off the beaten track, and is really only used by people driving to their farms, not to get to any other town.
love ur vids mate always interesting watch other ppl react to Aus
It's a very Australia show we have high patrol to which is like cops in American
Voting yes for finishing watching rest of the episode, then you'll get the answer's to your first question of what happens to them
At the end of the RBT video, they usually detail the penalties incurred for each incident.
I want your reaction to Aussie cops vs Yanky cops.
Love your attitude to drink/drug driving 👍🏼
BTW when your teaching someone to drive not only the driver need to have a BAC of 0.00 but the instructor as well, when I was teaching my daughter she got pulled over for RBT so we both got tested, it's surprising how many people think that since they're over the limit they can let their child learner driver drive and they'll be ok.
From the NSW drivers handbook for alcohol "Penalties can be fines, loss of licence, prison or an alcohol interlock on your vehicle. The penalty depends on how much you’re over the limit and whether it’s a first or repeat offence."
Many drugs like MDMA are illegal, so getting caught with those will cause you more problems.
These kinds of shows were always on the tv early on at night for my family. Every weeknight we would eat dinner and watch these shows XD
The annoying thing about a breathalyser is that you must wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking before using one. But it's also good chance to reflect on whether you may have had too much.
Fortunately it is only going to report too high rather than too low if you do it out of the recommended parameters
Here in Canada if someone sees someone swerving between lanes they will call the police and they will pull you over and give you 3 tests. The walk test and the breathalyzer test. If they find your over the legal limit and you will ve charged DUI and lose your license
Drink driving kills
Preliminary oral drug tests are followed by evidentiary oral drug tests BUT are also followed by lab tests which occasionally put the EBT on its head.
Iirc I think low level drink driving is followed by suspensions and maybe summons, and a temporary driving ban. I think high range drink driving has more felonious repercussions like community service.
.
Also fun fact Victoria has a hoon legislation such that if you simply massively lose traction or put too many passengers in a car, your vehicle is seized.
Lol I love this show but never really watch it... why is watching him watch it so much more engaging??
The first guy and his wife cracked me up. "I still give people the shits... 😁"
"Mostly me!!"
😂😂😂
