there was a jewish priest, a muslim priest and an AoE priest and they were having a conversetion about Jesus -"Jesus was a prophet of Allah" said the muslim -"NO" yelled the jew "Jesus was a lying heretic!" -AoE priest said "Wololo". Both agreed.
Man... this game man. Even the installation setup was a thing of art. Villagers would literally walk on screen and begin building a wonder as part of the installation progress info.
+Dangermouse YES! So did I! I remember we were never allowed sugary cereals, but because you could get AOE we were actually allowed a box of Nutrigrain. Microsoft had some of the best demos back in the day, and I think I actually played Rise of Rome demo more than the full game we got.
Slail I don't remember exactly when I got AoE2, but I think it was in 4th grade then, or it was shortly after that (I was out of elementary school then). I remember I got it on Christmas though.
Highretrogamelord I don't remember exactly when I got it. Just some day when I saw it on a shelf somewhere. I liked anything with knights and shit on it at the time.
Slail I have played the demo of AoE2 before, because it was on a CD of a computer game magazine and I knew I had to have it. There was also TA: Kingdoms and GTA 2 on the CD, two other games I had to have. Of course, GTA 2 wasn't allowed for me.
My dad used to give me AOE ll to play without any opponents when I was little. I called it "the building game". I just kind of digged around and built stuff. Now I have the HD version on steam. So many memories...
The priest's WOLOLO was always the scariest thing to hear in a death match when I was attacking the enemy bases! Especially when you couldn't figure out where it was coming from xD
Later 90's was such a good time to be a RTS player. Played the crap out of this back then. Age wise we were almost the same. I was 13 when this was out.
This whole game had like it's own flavor. Like sometimes you really feel like eating some chocolate, and in the same way you randomly feel like playing this game. It's music, those caped Legion soldiers, their repetitive yet iconic movements and voices, even just the farming. This is peak nostalgia.
This game was my life! It was so amazing to know that you started with the Demo as well. I played that Demo like for a year before i could get a full game copy. Thanks for this great review.
Great review for a great game! I would play this all the time as a kid, never got boring. Also, off topic but you have a great voice, the kind you hear on commercials or radio.
When I was about six years old, this game was the shit. It inspired my interests in Ancient History. I even built a little hut out of twigs that looked like the Stone Age houses when I was ten. I would like to see an HD remake of this game, with a lot of the old bugs and problems worked out. Also the farming queue option from AoE II would be nice. Basically, AoE II framework/mechanics with the Rise of Rome Setting/Aesthetic/Units etc.
What you describe in a remake is precisely what I crave. I absolutely love the civilizations, maps, and music from this one. I'd love the improvements from later games in this one!
Lazy Game Reviews I am pleasantly surprised how fast a youtuber responded to my comment :) Yes, I agree. I think Microsoft and Ensemble are sitting on a little treasure trove with this IP, the same way I felt about AoE II getting its remake. Perhaps if there is enough support from the community, it will happen. Hell, I would throw my money at an official Kickstarter if it happened
+Atomic Surge There are a few modders out there attempting an AOE II conversion with what you desire. I do not know if it will bare fruit though. >< That sadly seems the greatest hope.
Oh wow this game used to be my go to game for quite awhile. But I somehow lost the disc and havent played in years. Thank you for doing this video, because the sound effects of the game took me back to my youth. Praise be to Wololo
Oh wow, a game that I've actually played! My experience with Windows games is minimal but I do remember this game very fondly! Seeing this review made me want to go back to it and try playing it again...
Fun Fact: In Vietnam we have a large number of gamers playing AoE:RoR even today and every year we "Exchange Culture" with our best northern "Friends" China with "Love and Peace".
***** Thanks for letting me know it exists but it would still be nice to get a HD version of AoE1 I just have so many memories of that game but it's just horribly unoptimised for modern computers
***** I never sad that AoE2 was a bad game, in fact, it might be better than AoE1 but I just like the first one better because of the time period it's that simple. AoE2 is set in the medieval times while AoE1 is set in the ancient times
You have two options. One is unofficial aoe hd patch made by fans community. Second is remastered version from Microsoft. Lgr said that original game had problems with the patch finding - then better don't play the remastered version. Music, visuals are perfect, but game mechanics is terrible.
This game was amazing back then and i remember spending a lot of time with it. Often cheating my way to victory as a kid! I'm looking forward to the Definitive Edition next year!
You have hit my nostalgia button dead on here, LGR. I actually let out a cheer when I read that you were reviewing Age of Empires, it holds some very fond memories for me. It came with the the first PC my family ever bought, which if I remember correctly had a Pentium II processor, and was the crux for fuelling my interest in strategy games. I still own my original copy which is now 17 years old, it's fascinating to see how technology has advanced since the game's release. You are correct in saying it maybe doesn't hold up as well today however that wave of nostalgia I feel whenever I play it will always remain and as I said previously it's the main reason as to why the strategy genre is where my gaming interests mainly lie.
I loved this game back in the day. I have the Gold edition and I used to love trying to make the most elaborate scenarios I could think off (if I remember right), one was a large map with lots of islands, only 4 at either ends of the map had gold and stone, alligators all over the place and you only start with 2 priests and two villagers and could only go one way and you had to find the town center and keep it defended as you couldn't build more, then defeat everyone. I also used to love using the coinage cheat and getting loads of gold along with the quarry and woodstock for stone and wood and making loads of juggernaughts, helepolis, heavy catapults and cataphracts and waiting until my enemies had built up a big enough civilisation a lot to kill and destroy, and away I went with my super forces to destroy.
Been waiting for you to review this one for a long time! You did not disappoint. I literally played this game every day for like a month when I first got it. I was hooked. Me and my friend would set up scenarios for each other to play with lots of craziness and hundreds of axe-men!
+Lazy Game Reviews My mom has forgotten that I exist because of this game XD I showed her this video and she laughed really hard. Even now she plays it EVERY DAY.
Wow this is nostalgic - my Dad used to play the crap out of this game 20 years ago when I was little! The 'OLOLO, AYOOOO' sound effects were so entertaining for me and my sister. Now I think of it, I have no idea how Dad navigated this when, being a newly-immigrated Korean, spoke elementary-level English. But he still enjoyed it a LOT, so it was obviously an amazing game. Thanks again for a great knowledgable review and memory trip :)
This game was one of the best! I remember coming home from school and immediately playing Age of Empires for 2-3 hrs on end. I was definitely a force to be reckoned with. ;) I still play Age of Empires 2 to this day with the Steam HD release!
Good old memories. I was a kid back in 1999 and didn't have a computer, I remember going to the local internet cafe just to watch older guys play this game. Finally got my computer a few years later, AoE was the first game i bought.
Age of Empires was my grandpa’s favourite game. He was a big computer fan, despite his age. I’ve always sucked completely at the game, but I’ve held onto his original copy with its box and instruction manual - both to remember him, and as a wonderful piece of gaming history. Such a great game. I just wish I were better at it.
Age of Empires was one of the first few RTS games I ever played (Tho the very first was the demo version of Tanktics), and I still love it, all grown up, because it is unique, it has something attractive about it. I wish they would make a remake based on the AOE2 engine, if necessary
Some team already thinking about it, after third expansion for the AoE II we will maybe see AoE 1 remake, who knows. Unofficialy I know, they working already on it :-).
Hey Clint, love your work, the interview with Dan was a pleasant surprise BTW :0D 'Flight SIM' and AOE were reported to be the first games fully written in the Win32 API and I play it still :0))
This game blew my 3 year old mind as I could do battles and I physically ran away from the computer whenever that battle horn went so I basically played sitting on my Dad's lap.
Love that you mentioned the trial version, as it was my first RTS experience and I'll definitely always remember the mission starting with the two priests. ^^ I do agree that AoE sadly hasn't stood up to time passing, but the memories of having our dad help carry our computer to a friend's house for LAN parties for this game definitely have. :D
I loved the Age of Series as a kid. Most notably Age of Mythology, but Age of Empires 1 holds a special place in heart for it introduced me to the wonders of "Wololo"
0:27 "Although the screenshots on the back are somewhat misleading..." Looking back at my Age of Mythology and AoE III copies, it looks like they did that with every game. I never noticed that.
I came here to tell you my story. Of a 8 year old boy from Croatia. This is by far the fondest memory of my childhood. Having played only CnC, Dune 2 and a demo Red Alert 1 this game was a leap so high I couldn't believe it. The graphics so stunning, the animations so fluid, the effects so vivid, the sound track so awesome on my Sound Blaster AWE64! So basically when I was 8 years old I recived a CD from the local PC magazine called Vidi. Back then Demos were basically my only games since I had no money and games were hella expensive back then by our standards. Piracy wasn't wide spread since CD still were not that cheap and CD burners were hella expensive. Plus my city was small. I literally played the game day in day out for god knows how many hours. For god knows how long. The few scenarios of the demo so vivid in my memory I remember whats where exactly still today a good 18 years later. My friends and I loved the game so much we started timing the fastest runs, if you guys remember GOLD was super rare in the demo. So we had runs were we'd collect as much gold as possible. We also had runs to convert as many Non-Hittite units such as the upgraded archers and fishermen. So great was the importance of the game to me that even back then I went and bought a case for the CD of the demo. I still have it today. After a while one of them a rich kids from my class got the original CD of the game. After a few weeks of playing he promised me I could take the CD home. So I did. Back then this was the first game I had gotten. I had no idea you couldn't play it without the CD! Anyways I literally skip jumped home giggling like a maniac, I never in my life remember begin so happy. Ever. I intalled it I played it for what seems to be 14 or more hours without a break. My mother was worried she had never seen me like that. A day later I took the CD out and noticed I couldn't play without it. I was desperate. No internet, no adults that knew how to pirate, no nothing my knowledge of English non-existent... After a good half hour of trying to figure it out I figured out you could still play if you left the game running but took out the CD in the main menu after it loaded. This was probably done so you could spawn play like in SC1. I had no idea at the time. So for the first time in my life. The PC was on for 10 days straight in the games main menu. It never crashed pretty impressive too! Later this knowledge let do my computer class in 2000 playing AoE for 4 hours every week on LAN huge 4v4 battles! Even the teacher played with us. It was incredible. Well thats my story. I fucking love this game.
The trial was amazing! I played the mission where you start with 2 priests so much. The red enemy AI was way to overpowered, though. I could'nt beat it.
I remember that scenario with two priests from demo-version. It was the first RTS scenario I played in my life, and I was seven years old. The priests instantly became my favourite units and "wololo" - the most admired and feared sound of all. Somehow the whole gameplay process seemed intuitive to me. Played it a lot until my dad gifted me the full version of Age of Empires. 11 By the way, you could dry the red player out of resources if you played long enough. Even slowely cut through the east woodline to create a land bridge to the enemy.
Damn, I didn't realise this game was so old! I was born in 1997 and I played this game a tonne as a kid. We had quite a few of them, including Age of Mythology. Even with Age of Mythology, there were a few issues. The campaign is pretty bad (some of them don't work and so are too easy/ hard while others are pretty much impossible to finish), the AI in your own custom maps was terrible, so if you had a really cool concept for one (like I did one where they had to cut their way out of a giant forest) the enemy just stood there and if you turned up the enemy level to the hardest in general gameplay it got nigh impossible to win, even when I'd been trying for months and had every click laid out. Watching stuff about the HD remakes it just seems they've tweaked them to better suit online gaming and specs, whereas I really want a brand new one with the same basis but improved AI and features to match modern capabilities :(
My favourite classic game reviewer reviews my favourite classic game. Can this day be even any better? It may sound odd knowing this is 2 years old, but we can find something new to us every day.
The big one... I was 6 or 7 when I got this. I remember the day. The first game I really got into. I love history now, and this may be part of the reason.
OMG I replayed the trail version over and over when I was about 7 years old. It made my childhood :') (didn't know that a full game existed until my Dad's friend got me one)
With many of your game reviews; you really know how to tingle my military conquest/political interest. Also, I'm going to keep beating my dead horse and say; "Do an Alien's games review!!!". Also, I think you really need an XCOM UFO Defense episode.
Man .... This game... I grew up playing this game and now I'm 32 me, my brother and best friend regularly meet up with our laptops to play this together... Hours have been lost , relationships have been damaged, but all was worth it 😂
Hey, Clint. Great choice in game to review, this one hit me by surprise! Another suggestion to possibly review- which is very similar to this game- is Populous: The Beginning. One of my all time favourites, I have it and AoE big box edition.
Age of Mythology w/ Expansion is still the best Age of game in my opinion then 3, then 2, then 1. 2 is just objectively better than 1, 3 is a different, but, I would say, better game.
Yes, I also played the heck out of this demo and I bought the full game even after I had AoE II. It blew my out of my shoes more than its successful successor!
Roses are red
Violets are blue

Good one, but you didn't come up with it.
there was a jewish priest, a muslim priest and an AoE priest and they were having a conversetion about Jesus

-AoE priest said "Wololo". Both agreed.

They think that mohamed was the biggest prophet.

Back in the days when you could get FULL games in cereal boxes.

I got roller coaster tycoon with my lucky charms. Master piece of software
You can full game bundles for a dollar now a days.
Age of Empires...a great start.
And then came....Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. One of THE best games of all time.
Thats the game that blew my little 12 year old mind. Still got this one though.

Omg yes The horror
soooo true

Not conventionally scary, but scary like a nextbot.

Where can I get this game? I understand its an older title but I have wanted to try it and the only place I can find it is on Amazon for $30 :/
It's neither on GoG nor on Steam. I guess you have to look for it second hand and hope it works on newer machines :/
there might be a patch fix for it

It had a few aspects I preferred to Age of Kings, but I prefer the core series.
It was good, but the low poly 3D graphics have aged worse than AOK's sprites and the gameplay wasn't quite as good imo.

Looking back at my Age of Mythology and AoE III copies, it looks like they did that with every game. I never noticed that.
StarCraft did it too!
Almost every game I own has misleading screenshots on the cover - seems to be a trend!
You reply to a lot of comments. Wish more people did that. But it's awesome of you that you do. :D
I've tried to get into this game but I can't, I guess Age of Empires 2 HD edition has me too spoiled.
Finally this epic review of this epic game!
now do a command & conquer review plz
I love this game! I'm glad you finally covered it!
I need an LGR Age of Empires 2 review in my life, followed by Age of Mythology of course.
Also funny how he mentions micro. That level of micro lead me eventually to SC Bnet and later WC3 and SC2 where I was pretty good as a Diamond rank :)
I also wanted it because of the Demo, I think it was pre-installed on Win98 and everyone knew this game because of it.
5 years and no one mentioned (from what I saw) the fact that the opening scene depicts a dude racking another dude
By the way, you could dry the red player out of resources if you played long enough. Even slowely cut through the east woodline to create a land bridge to the enemy.
i like your videos ! discovered your channel yesterday and i'm glad i did !
Good game, AOE 2 was the masterpiece though.
I grew up on ages 1 and am now an absolute addict for ages 2 definitive edition haha
Very nice.
Watching stuff about the HD remakes it just seems they've tweaked them to better suit online gaming and specs, whereas I really want a brand new one with the same basis but improved AI and features to match modern capabilities :(
Lol you just suck at it.
My favourite classic game reviewer reviews my favourite classic game. Can this day be even any better? It may sound odd knowing this is 2 years old, but we can find something new to us every day.
Why wont you review Age of kings!!
Never said I wouldn't.
just doo itt... yesterday you said tomorow soo justt dooo ittttt...
but you never said you would :P
Well, it's been 2 years
@@HoushoFX Well it's been 4 years...
The big one...
I was 6 or 7 when I got this. I remember the day. The first game I really got into.
I love history now, and this may be part of the reason.
Hoyo Hoyo !
These games and the Ceaser/Pharoah/Emperor games ate so much of my time when I was younger. So much fun to be had
i wonder, how do you turn this on?
Nice 😉
OMG I replayed the trail version over and over when I was about 7 years old. It made my childhood :')
(didn't know that a full game existed until my Dad's friend got me one)
hommus
habbadakkus
Ohk-lama.
Bison.
Zookanta!
Honez!
With many of your game reviews; you really know how to tingle my military conquest/political interest. Also, I'm going to keep beating my dead horse and say; "Do an Alien's games review!!!". Also, I think you really need an XCOM UFO Defense episode.
There was diplomacy system in Age of Empires? Well, the more you know...
1) Destroy town centers.
2) Murder all villagers.
3) Next enemy.
Clint man we need a follow up review of Definitive Edition
Man .... This game... I grew up playing this game and now I'm 32 me, my brother and best friend regularly meet up with our laptops to play this together... Hours have been lost , relationships have been damaged, but all was worth it 😂
"Time has moved on.. AoE is all but overlooked now"... You were sayin' ?? XD XD
How about the definitive edition ! :P
This game came out a couple of years before I was born, yet was the thing that sparked my love for PC gaming. Well, this and AOE 3
Wololo
Hey, Clint.
Great choice in game to review, this one hit me by surprise!
Another suggestion to possibly review- which is very similar to this game- is Populous: The Beginning. One of my all time favourites, I have it and AoE big box edition.
I remember the Populous 3 demo more fondly than the full game! That demo was incredible.
LGR.. Star Wars Battleground.. Make it haps broooooo :)
AoE was my first real game that I ever played and I have so much love for it. I got really excited just seeing you did a review of it!
The only game where you can defeat the Hittites with a baby on a tricycle wielding a shotgun.
Let's be real here, basically the only game with the Hittites in the first place. :p
my father played this game a lot. I don't miss my father much anymore but, by god, this made me wanna cry....
thanks lgr for reminding me of this game
Erectus!
