    Ps: I forgot to add that the documentary begins with Johnson citing a Schopenhauer quote: talent hits a target no-one else can hit; genius hits a target no-one else can see. Thanks for watching. I’ll post a longer video explaining the Žižekian/Lacanian concept of “Enjoy your Symptom”. If you’d like to support my work please join my patreon. Thank you. www.patreon.com/julianphilosophy

    Bryan Johnson should take a page from Nietzsche. Nietzsche was ill his whole adult life and yet he was against the idea of an afterlife and preserving one's life as a primary function. He thought we should live in a way that celebrated the body in a non dualistic way, and that we should love our fate.

    Nietzsche warned us this kind of man would come. He was intelligent and honest enough to know what was coming. Hell, even the Christians saw it coming.

    People have been doing this kind of stuff for centuries, there's an interesting book (I forget the name) on how all culture is in some way the avoidance of death. But then at a more basic level, life is an avoidance of death. Length of time is immaterial to the mountains, and to death itself. What is nouvelle is the technology and social media combine to lend a credence to almost any idea, the spectacle can and will sell you anything. The interesting part is as you say how this is such a vivid example of Jouissance. Which seems to be something capitalist culture is expert in manufacturing. Consumption as compulsion.

    Even people interested in psychoanalysis agreeing with johnsons mission is the reason we need these videos... from a scientific perspective his research is quite literally useless because hes doing so much that we will not know what "supplement" leads to what outcomes, how it would affect not just him anecdotally but the general population, what is the result of supplements and what is the result of just living healthy (eating well, doing exercise, sleeping) lol.

    3:48 techno Christ...there's something truly disturbing about this. Something that somehow seems darkly anti-human. There's not a detail I have heard about this man's life that I don't find nauseating; what particularly bothers me is that it almost feels like this man is getting off on uploading all of these disgusting, un-asked for details of his inner life onto the internet, getting off on subjecting the whole world to this crap. Really strange man, and a nice exemplar of the excesses of contemporary ideology in the Liberal west.

    Thanks for the analysis! I really enjoyed it. My thoughts are:
    In a sense everyone is dependent on creating meaning in life. Too much dependance creates obsessions or extreem behaviour, yet his behaviour could also be analysed in a Spinozist sense of extreem self preservation. Although extreem and with narcissistic traits in the case of Bryan Johnson as you rightfully pointed out, all life seems to have agency compelling them to preserve or procreate life yet also destruction. Spinoza was and still is criticised as being nihilistic, yet neither his critics nor critics of Bryan Johnson or him and his fanbase, are actually accepting death as the end of life. One does not have to be self destructive or self preserving towards mind or body to feel alive, one must simply feel alive to give meaning, or give meaning to feel alive. The ego is a self perpetuating pain and pleasure vehicle, and only when we free it, do we enjoy life as direct experience, which seems to me not a goal, but a blessing every time one experiences it. There are no ideologies that operate on the level of direct experience, it is a hard and humbling road everyone has to walk themselves

      Its innevitable that such philosophy will pop up with modern tech. When enough people dont need to work to live, someone is bound to dedicate themselves to push the human body to its limits and unlock its potential.
      Hell i hope in the future we live way longer and even maybe forever, and have mastered bodily function to a point were we have some abilities like the ones displayed in Dune, how much of that is possible? No idea. But the call to adventure to just try and find out is strong, and rightfully so imo.

    I am a fan of your analysis but this is certainly not one your best videos. I am not a Bryan Johnson fanboy but i see only positives in his contribution and have similar understanding of how thoughts of depression could be overcome when the body is healthier.
    While you critique Bryan J thru the lens of Lacan and the like, one could argue that Bryan J has found 'meaning' in the blueprint as what to dedicate his life to.
    The pessimistic counter-argument of life is sickness is just intellectual gibberish at best.' Life is sickness death is the cure, death is sickness, life is a symptom etc.
    There is no refuting that life is decay to death however influencing the quality of experiences in the finite backdrop could well be translated to a passion project. You take Proust as an example, he was one of the most unhealthy beings in the history of literature, would you say that he didnt want to be healthier or didnt want to live longer ? One could say that Bryan J cant live in anyother way , any other form of living would be rid with depression and thoughts of suicide.
    What I mostly see in this video is a character assassination of Bryan J for telling he wants to attach his body to his kids or transfusing plasma with his son and dad ( which was a little creepy i will admit) but none the less objectively meaningful.
    He has risen from the ashes of a corporate slave to give new meaning and values to his life by embracing the best of what is available, seems to me like Nietzsche would praise him.

    • @aguspuig6615
      @aguspuig6615 2 дня назад +7

      Exactly. Atacking Brian for his lifestyle would be like atacking Lebron James because he trains too much and thus cant have a more normal and balanced life.
      No one would do that, because we understand the meaning that comes with dedicating yourself fully to the pursuit of athletics, so we welcome full dedication instead of calling it an unhealthy obsession.
      Hell id argue one of the best traits humanity has is the ability to be a little crazy and obsessed about selective topics, leading to the best advancements and most impressive figures.
      Even the blood plasma thing, sure you can make it sound creepy ''i want the blood of my son!'', but hell, if i could help my father feel way better by pretty much just giving him a blood transfusion with extra steps? If we didnt live in the age of mindlessly hating everybody this would be seen as a wholsome and kind jesture that should honestly become a trend.

  • @aguspuig6615
    @aguspuig6615 2 дня назад +5

    You have a man that has had a crisis of meaning. Id say this is deeply relatable to most nowadays
    Hes dedicated his life to the standard capitalist success model, and hes made it, hes rich. Yet he still feels unfullfilled. This is if not relatable, as most of us arent rich, fairly easy to sympathise with.
    He then finds meaning in doing something that, while partially a sacrifice, will be usefull in the future, be it as simple inspiration, or with some scientific data to start future studies on.
    He says he finds happiness and satisfaction not only in the act itself of what he does, but in how it will affect humanity for the better.
    You're telling me this isnt the story of every athlete, scientist and honest politician (if such a thing exists)?
    Why are we trying to pretend its revolting, hes hurting no one, and is rightfully deriving enjoyment out of potentially helping humanity as a whole and perhaps being remembered fondly in history (something everyone has dreamt of at some point).
    And ofc the way to tear this down is to weaponise psych language, and to intuition pump for disgust.
    You say ''take 100s of pills a day'' then ignore that pretty much all those pills are just supplements, not drugs, so you can benefit from the negative connotation pills have.
    You say ''shock therapy for the penis'' to pull on the wierdness that evokes, but if its not bad for your health, and is in fact good, then it can be more easily equated to a workout, or a cold plunge, something thats not necessary and uncomfortable, but ultimately good.
    You have enough ammunition to poke fun at the idea, but this honestly sounds like and old timey politician pointing to ''common sense'' to discredit an idea ''god doesnt want homosexuality to exist! look at two men kissing and tell me its not wierd and icky! We all know it, it is evil'' Hell you even have the references to societal degeneracy.
    Hes objectively doing either a net neutral or a net good, and your biggest atack is that hes symbolising the depravity of our society. What next? Are you gonna acuse his youtube channel of being ''degenerate art''?
    No, because that sort of phrasing isnt in style anymore, so youll do the two modern equivalents, call him ''godless'' and ''burgoise'' to appeal neatly to all the political aisle. Bro, if i could give some of my blood and improve my fathers health, you know id have a happy moment too

    • @Liisa3139
      @Liisa3139 2 дня назад

      Taking 100s of pills a day is a serious stress to the liver. Supplement consumption has caused health damage, even in small dosages, because supplements are not supervised the way medical pills are. They can contain anything. Also, the possible damage is most likely gradual and will manifest itself after a longer period of time.
      Just search "supplements damage". Actually anything in excess can kill you, like drinking too much water. Our body can only use small amounts of vitamins and other supplements. When the threshold is met, the rest will end up in urine and therefore the environment. It is pollution to the intestines and after that pollution to the world. We do not live in a vacuum.
      Then there are the social consequences of the example he is giving to his social environment. We can never measure these. But we don't live in a vacuum.

I think these people are very excited about watching how the movie ends is all.

    symbolic death, disembodied other, master signifier, sacrifice on behalf of humanity, little to do with science? Solipsistic pursuit, not of longevity but of meaning, has to become a god himself, I think, provides him with pleasure, draw plasma from his son, element of self interest, shared connections, desublimate himself into the other, as himself, dystopian hyper capitalist, morbid fascination with living forever, life sickness onto death...

    I enjoy your videos Julian, but this video is clearly coming from a bad place of conscience. Bryan Johnson is running experiments on his own body out of his own funds and generating information which might just benefit all of us. While he does have some narcissistic personality (especially when he boasts about how he is top healthy person on this or that leaderboard), attacking him for him having found his purpose is really petty. There are far worse ways one could spend their time on this planet. This guy staking his money and turning himself into a guinea pig to test the limits of biohacking is easily one of the better ways of contributing to the society. Also do note that one these weird experiments may just end up killing him and the whole project goes in the drain. And he seems to be okay with that deal. I think that's commendable.

    • @foodchewer
      @foodchewer 2 дня назад

      What good is any information gleaned from his "experiment" going to do? What controls has he imposed? This is ONE guy, with a very specific set of life circumstances, a very specific environment, very specific genetics and an anatomy and physiology specific to him. I doubt how much serious scientific evidence can be gleaned from this man's "experiment" (i.e. his narcissistic sideshow attraction to generate wealth, influence, and maybe extend his life in the bargain). I don't see the value in any of it, but I also don't care enough to read up on what this guy is doing or how. It just seems so patently obvious to me that it's just not worth paying attention to. I would further go on to say I don't think Julian's video is an attack, but a critique and an analysis.
