“Angela Rayner Sees Businesses As Cash Cows to Be Milked” | Dr David Bull

  • Angela Rayner is reportedly furious after she and the Transport Secretary were blamed for risking a £1 billion investment in the UK economy just ahead of Keir Starmer’s investment summit.
On Friday, DP World, the owner of P&O Ferries, withdrew plans to invest in its London Gateway container port. This came after Rayner and Louise Haigh criticised the company, calling it "unscrupulous" and "exploitative."
This comes as Sir Keir Starmer marks 100 days in office amidst a turbulent start. His government has faced scandals, including the "freebies" controversy, a No. 10 power struggle, and plummeting approval ratings.
Despite challenges, such as economic concerns and rising immigration, Starmer aims to refocus on the economy and major policy reforms, like renationalising rail and expanding workers' rights.
Dr David Bull hosts a head-to-head debate between Deputy Policy Director for The Centre For Social Justice, Sophia Worringer and Barrister Sam Fowles.

Labour are only in power because of the badly, and sadly, flawed electoral system. Labour are a minority government, not a majority, they only have support of 20% of the electorate, 33.7% support from those that voted, yet they have 64% of the seats. As a result, it took only 23,500 votes to elect one Labour MP but over 800,000 votes to elect one Reform MP.
The faceless electoral system voted Labour in, the voters certainly didn't. Begs the question why anyone voted. The urgent issue needing attention is to fix the system, and for voters to be certain that they're not wasting their time voting.
No-one appears to be tackling this exceptionally important miscarriage of democracy and no-one appears to be mentioning it in the media. Aren't we supposed to live in a democracy?

If the government wants us to get rid of zero hours contracts then when the government hand out tenders for contracts they are going to have to ensure us payment for the length of the contract. Currently we contract to the local authotity and they can get rid of us on a weeks notice and then we would have no work for staff.

The economy has slowed down precisely for what Sam is arguing for - regulation! It’s over regulation that has stifled innovation and entrepreneurship in the UK. It’s even worse in Europe where of course there is even more bureaucracy. You could never start a company like Facebook here aside from anything there is no capital here. And we don’t have first amendment protections. It would have been killed by government intervention if it started getting somewhere here. And also if you wanna start a tech company you couldn’t get funding here like you could in USA for example. It’s just a moronic argument. That’s why our economy is fucked. Ultimately. We produced a lot of the underlying tech that these companies use. Similar in many other industries.

@@sharonseed Yes there are many bone idle people and as an ex employer I met many of them. However part-time and zero hours workers tend to be older but their circumstances as parents or carers or the fact that they lead a simpler life paying their own way without the need for a full time job doesn't make them spongers. Perhaps you should be looking at the 'work from home' snivel serpents, and yes, many years ago I was a civil servant but realised I much preferred a real job.
