Only works if you have very intelligent player like Lahm (best RB of the last decade) and Alaba (one of the LB in word). Both are versatil and can hold the ball.
Yeah. Ange Postecoglou is trying to play this style at Celtic just now with one of the worst full back / centre back pairings in the club's history. Very frustrating to watch! He creates a barrel of chances but the defence is all over the place, see highlights of the recent games vs Leverkusen and Betis.
Who said that in order to neutralize the advance of the inverted full backs the opposing team has to move their wingers inwards too? Absolutely not. The opposing team has to advance their midfielders to face the inverted full backs and simultaneously open their wingers wide, in the same "height" (line) of the inverted full backs. This way inverted full backs face immediate face-to-face opposition in the form of the advanced midfielders of the opposing team and also an imminent threat in the form of the opposing team's opened wingers. If you have deadly fast wingers like Neymar or Everton (Gremio/Brazil) or Douglas Costa (Juventus/Brazil) -- just to name a few -- the inverted full backs will be in big trouble during a counter-attack.
