Yep, I’m really grateful to bladecentered for pointing that out. It’s not something I usually try with my backlocks because it doesn’t work that great with most of them but the Siren closes so slick like that and it totally increases the fidget factor!! Mine flicks open ok with the thumb but it rockets out with a mid finger Spydie flick. I was always stronger with that than with the thumb though.
That was an outstanding review. You did an excellent job of identifying and describing many of the design ideas of the Siren! Thank you also for sharing the story about Nick. That was very touching and I have to admit I was a bit watery eyed by the end. Nick and I followed each other on IG and had a few brief conversations over the years about knives and specifically about the Siren. Please do not auction off that knife. I would like for you to keep that one. I will send you a new Siren to auction off. Hit me up on IG @crkayakfishing and get me your address and I’ll get one out to you.
Great review man! Definitely a touching story at the end, thanks for sharing it. Funny how our passion for knives and gear connect so many of us. Take care out there!
The blade shape with that mild drop and that prominent guard reminded me of the SOG Flash II. Great review. And I personally like basic, no thrill designs like this, it makes them timeless. Edit: I definitely commented before watching till the end. Thank you for sharing the story of Nick with us.
This appeals to me more than any new Spyderco in a long time. (Z-Cut excluded. Get you one, they're dope.) Every aspect seems tailored to the task at hand. I'm almost always inland and I have other knives to do the job just fine, but whatever's on kayak knife duty is wet pretty much all summer, so if I was closer to salt, this would be high on my list. I'm sorry for your loss. Thanks for telling the story. Mrs. JT sounds like a keeper.
Thanks for sharing the back story. Sounds like you have at least two very special people in your life, though one is gone now. Those types of blessings are few and far between.
I’m so glad that you mentioned the fidget factor. Whenever I see a lock back I think twice. But the blue accents are super unusual for a spyderco and it’s a nice looking piece. And your jimping comments gave me a much needed laugh 🤣 Thanks man!
So I might have gotten the fidget factor wrong here. It's never gonna be as good as a compression lock but I figured some things out eith it and I'm posting a 2 minute addendum video today hahaha.
@@kpfagerberg if I’m looking for a real beater I’ll buy a beater. If you’re a real collector you can appreciate all aspects of knives. Clutching your pearls at appreciating a knife for another reason than utilitarian is certainly your prerogative but there’s no need to dig at people with different appreciations
This is a great knife. I got mine a few days ago and it hasn't left my pocket since. Love fishing and knives so this was an easy buy. Feels like I waited ages for ot to finally drop 🔪👍🗡
I was considering this model or the Native Chief to change it up. The DLT/Manix 2 exclusive got my money, sucker for that model per our previous back and forth. That blade is definitely on the radar, thanks for putting it on the table for us! 👍👌
I absolutely love this knife! From every point. If you really dissect it, it’s perfect and makes more sense in hand if your an outdoorsman/fisherman, as I am ( still good for EDC, IMO ). I wasn’t sure if a lock-back for this but damn, it’s what it needed. Great design, Lance!
I'm happy to hear you're gonna keep it for the reasons you discussed. You can look at it and remember that conversation you had. I'm happy to have objects that my grandfather either had or things we would talk about. It's like I have a piece of him with me or something that was a part of him that I can hold and touch. Completely understand.
I bought my 1st sprint run it was the orange native 5 with Rex45. I also bought the maxamet para 3. Not sure if that's a sprint run or not. I swore I wasn't gonna buy them just because of the steels but, I did.... couldn't help it. I will carry and use them both. I don't ever sell any of my stuff. Thanks for the content JT. As usual always interesting. 🤙🏼👍🏼
Great Spydercos right there, can't say a bad thing about them. The Maxamet isn't a sprint but it's so sporadic with availability that it can be just as hard to come by. Excellent ones for your collection!
Sorry to hear about your friend Nick. Hold on to this knife and keep his memory alive. I'm not a big fan of large folders, but I like a plain and simple design, I love a backlock on a working knife, and I've never handled a Spyderco that didn't have good ergos and a slicey blade. Looks like one I just might need to get!
Spyderco lockback usually have a dead spot or choil, so when you press on the lock you can let the blade fall and the dead spot or choil will hit against you finger. That’s usually how I close spyderco lock backs. This does not seem to have that.
I just got mine today, and can confirm that it DOES allow for that method of closure. As long as you have your index finger ALL the way forward behind the guard, there is just enough of a dead spot. It's a great knife.
Nope, that's a keeper, and if I were you, with the loss of a friend, it would be a user to pay tribute to Nick. You're a good man JT. Enjoy that knife.
That does look a lot like the Wayne Goddard. Having just had mine out for my Instagram posts recently it's fresh in my mind. Size seems pretty similar too. Looks like a model I'll eventually get.
First time I saw the Siren was a Blade HQ interview with Eric Glesser at Shot Show 2020 and knew I wanted one. I eventually cancelled a pre-order thinking I would wait for a QC second run although no one has had any complaints about it. The first one that comes up I'll get. By the way, I will fidget a lockback.
Get one. My gen-1 is flawless. Far more free-dropping than JT's. Must absolutely make sure your index finger is chocked up near the guard when you release, or you'll get a nice cut.
The story is so awesome. Your wife is very special to have gotten that for you. That should stay in your collection forever. A memory of a friend and a present from your wife while pregnant. Knife seems very nice. Wish it had a compression lock as I can never Spydie flip their lockbacks. Use and enjoy it. .
I like the Caribbean too, but I don't think it is a longer knife. Like you said though, maybe larger overall with other dimensions in mind. I don't know much about nick, so I couldn't say if he would like this one or not.
After a couple weeks of carrying and using it exclusively, I’ve really enjoyed it. There are a couple things I’ll be changing. The lock bar definitely needs a Boye Dent, the lock releases slightly when I grip it hard. Secondly, I can’t stand the pointy pommel so I’ll be rounding if not flattening it.
You can definitely fidget that knife, go check out my review of it and you'll see a very cool feature at the end of the video
Damn, you're totally right. I was able to do that with the Wharny Endura, can't believe I didn't think of it with this. Thanks a lot!
@@JTsKnifeLife yeah the back lock on this one is one of best I've handled 👍

Oh no, you can’t fidget with a knife! Hope you don’t need to cut something with it, would take time away from fidgeting.

@@JTsKnifeLife I feel the same about my grandfather's items as well. Definitely will always be treasured. I'm glad you have that.
Really great review! I think you should keep it for life to remember your friend. If you part with it you will regret it
I'll definitely be keeping it, thank you. 👍
It’s like Spyderco designed a lightweight Recon 1. Pretty cool!
Great way of explaining it so succinctly hahaha

What happened to Nick?
He passed away a couple months ago. Sorry if you had to find out this way.

*OH FFS why don't you just have all your fingernails surgically removed?*
Because then I wouldn't be able to bite them anymore.
