How asinine. In their manual they acknowledged that there was a difference between the new and old water meters then said to read the new meters the same way the old meters should be read. This isn't the meter readers' fault; this is a problem with an undereducated management team.
I used to work for the city. They did the same thing to me. Not once but twice. I noticed that in the receipt that it says a phone number and it tells how to file a claim. It also tells you once you are about to pay. I had to pay the total that I was been charged but once I did that I filed a claim on the city website. I showed the payments difference and one of the supervisors was looking into my account and was looking at other months previous. They returned me almost $500 of over due payments. I believe you have 60 or 90 days to file a claim but you first have to pay the bill before they charge you extra fees or cut your water off.
Why is there not a 'sanity check' on the readings when there is unusual values for the type of service? They don't care. A Single family home with yard would use more than a condo unit, even with the same number of adults. An abnormal jump, should trigger a 'courtesy visit' to reread and observe the meter for continuous flow.
This appears to be happening more often, is there a hiring process in order to secure this position. It appears many people today read and write at a 3rd grade level...
There needs to be a personal fine for the people in charge who dropped the ball and some compensation for the customers. $150 credit perhaps with an apology. Can be very stressful. Advertise that this happened in a notice to customers and a contact email specifically for this issue set up perhaps. Dreaming can be fun.
Our MUD district in the northwest area of Harris County was having serious meter reading issues, with lots of residents complaining about erratic water bills, wrong readings, etc. It was eventually discovered that the meter reader company, which are typically just contractors like the City of Houston uses, would just sit at the local McDonalds and randomly fill out meter reads. They were fired, and we were fortunate enough for our MUD to switch to digital, remotely read meters for accuracy with no fraud. But the bottom line is that manual meter reading companies are filled with employees who don't do their job.
They need to train people better this happen to me once 1400 come to find out pipe was old rusted underground from when they first installed it 8 decades ago
I received a $3300 water bill I called to complain they said is a mistake and I don't need to pay until they investigate Next month I received $6200 bill it's a nightmare I called and asked for a supervisor he only said lower your voice, lower your voice
I just got a water bill showing that I had used 44,000 gallons of water and a bill of $1,248.79 from the City of Houston Water Department. I don't have a swimming pool. No water leakage in the house or around the house. The water meter is covered with dirt and leaves. So, my first impression was that no one has physically read my meter in months. My average water bill over 2023 was $49.67.
How about being charged $2440.67 for a meter reading of 6455. I immediately screamed and called the water company. My water bill is $65.79 every month. Two technicians came out to place a brand new meter, saying the wiring was really messed up. I can't wait to call the water company back on 6/7/24 to find out the new adjustments.
I have an appointment to see my mayor Monday. My bill has been minimum since 2017. And last month I was billed for 3,000 gallons, and this month for 8,000 gallons. The price difference is 82$ and 187$. The ***** at the water dept does not return my calls and the clerk at the counter refused to even listen to me. I'm a retired plumber, and my landlord has had a plumber out twice, We all agree the meter is malfunctioning. The totally inexperienced clerk has told me I'm mistaken. The city did send some one out to my home. The girl got out of the truck turned off my meter, Then she returned to her truck and a few minutes later she returned to the meter, and turned it back on. The City then left a message that my meter was tested and was fine. But turning the curb stop off and then on again is not a flow test. This is the City of Panama City, Florida.
FIRE THEM ALL. AND ISSUE THE REFUNDS!
Odd how they never read it to be lower.
It amazes me when you need to go to the media to get your rights otherwise they just ignore you
Arrest the responsible for fraud !or fire them and make them pay restitution !

City slackers

A regular citizen found what was wrong.

So, why all of a sudden did the Meter Readers forget how to read meters?
Just use the first four numbers of the check I'll pay with to credit my account, never mind where the decimal point is.

don't think that is going to happen
A nice Idea! and double for the supervisors!

How do you get your money back???
A modern city would have auto read meters. No idiot people involved.
We have auto read where I live in Virginia. I used 800 gallons last month for $12.13.
Fire them
Incompetent bureaucrats don't fire each other.
They need to train people better this happen to me once 1400 come to find out pipe was old rusted underground from when they first installed it 8 decades ago
They did on purpose no way they didn't know
this explains my 1k water bill after months of 200 bucks.

The city doesn't care just like thier Politicians and police departments
Because free profit is free Money, it will take the customers more money to try take this too court than would be for them just to keep the money.
You do not need a brain to run the water department.
And you don't need morals or principals either.
I’m having this same issue
Typical government. Pirates.
