- When This Bloody War is Over - Rab Noakes
Rab Noakes is always a great performer, whether it be his own or others' songs. Here's a wartime song of the British soldier, complete with typical blends of resignation, indignation and irreverence.
"Church parades on Sunday" were stupid forced attendance at Church of England services that took away some of the little leisure time the soldiers could enjoy.
If you like this song may I also suggest Green Fields of France and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda both written by Eric Bogle. My favs are by The Men They Couldn't Hang and The Pogues.
Also listen to Jerry Lynch´s A Silent Night (Christmas 1915)
R I P rab noakes
omg. this song like a song from my country, called "kulihat ibu pertiwi". different lyrics but has same tone
That's because both songs use melody from "What a Friend We Have in Jesus".
The melody is from an old Gospel “what a friend we have in Jesus”
It's not actually called, 'Green Fields of France.' According to Eric Bogle himself, it's titled, 'No Man's Land'
This song brings back memories for me.Rab Noakes-The best.
many thanx andy kershaw.
i have to learn this for a play im doing its such a good song
It is based on a famous hymn.
Thankyou 🙋♂️ Danke 🎋
came here thanks to horrible history (the books silly)
Does anyone have notes or tabs for this song?
actually, I think some of the pictures you have in this slide show is WW2, this version of the song doesn't seem to match that war, it matches WW1 a lot more definitely, cause of its references to medals being worthless, dodging shells, etc.
