Sean truly was a comedic genius, but even though he's gone he's still able to make so many people laugh and it's great. Also, if you like the deception of carrot in a box, you might like another great game show called "Would I Lie To You" and if you do check it out I recommend the clip of Kevin Bridges talking about buying a horse.

In the '80s there were a series of catfood ads. on British TV and they all ended with the line "eight out of 10 owners who expressed a preference said their cat prefers it". This line became a meme before there WERE memes!
In 2005, Channel 4 launched a comedy panel show called '8 Out of 10 Cats' ". . . a show about opinion polls, surveys and statistics" as host Jimmy Carr said at the start of every episode. There were two teams of three comedians/celebrities, two of whom were team captains. Sean Lock was one (series 1-18) and Jon Richardson the other (from series 11-18).
In 2012, as part of it's 30th-anniversary celebrations, Channel 4 did a one-off mash-up show combining '..Cats' with its daytime, 'family viewing' quiz show called 'Countdown', called '8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown'. It proved such a success that a series was commissioned, and its been running ever since. It was from this show that the '... challenging wank' clip was taken. The 'Carrot in a Box' clip was from a Christmas edition of 'Eight Out of 10 Cats', although it has made an appearance on its sister show.
As others have suggested, you should see 'Carrot in a Box' II and III.

Last Christmas at the family get together at our house, we played "Chocolate in a Box".....ripped off completely from this epic segment.
We drew out names to face each other...kids v kids, kids v adults, adults v adults to win some chocolate - it was the best and funniest time ever ....next Christmas we will do the same......thank you 8 out of 10 Cats for the inspiration

8 out of 10 cats is a comedy panel show based on statistics of the UK and current affairs. (Hence 8 out of 10)
For a charity week they took over another show called Countdown (a game show based on maths and anagrams which is watched by the elderly and university students. Don't ask..) to form '8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown' which was so popular they just kept it running for 10 plus years now

Hi King Boomer, just watched your two reactions to the brilliant Sean Lock - first his famous "Thats a challenging wank" comment and then "Carrot in a Box" This is a bit of a long comment but I hope you'll read it all and get an insight into how loved Sean was. I had been (and ofcourse still am) a huge fan of Sean since he first came onto our screens here in the UK over 25 years ago. I was working when the news came on the radio that Sean had passed away and I had to stop work and sit down while I cried for a full 30 minutes. I went home at the end of the day and spent all night drinking beer and watching Sean's many appearances on tv, swinging between laughing my arse off and crying like a baby.
You were absolutely right in your observation that all the other comedians on 8 out of 10 cats seemed to look up to him - on the UK comedy circuit Sean was known as "The Comedians Comedian." Whenever he appeared on a show such as Live From The Apollo which featured several comedians doing their own individual routines, when Sean came on the stage to do his bit all the other comedians would come out of their dressing rooms and stand in the wings to watch him - such was the respect, adoration and love that he had from his peers.
His loss to comedy is a devastating one, but we can at least console ourselves that there is a huge amount of Sean's material still out there to keep enjoying and through the miracle of RUclips and through people such as yourself, although he is no longer with us he will continue to gain new fans.
Thankyou so much Boomer for your kind words about Sean and keep watching him, keep reacting to his videos and keep laughing.
Oh and by the way, make sure you check out "Carrot in a Box - The Rematch!" you won't be disappointed.

There’s an interview with jimmy about Sean after he passed, talking about this game. When they were discussing doing the bit, they were mostly thinking to get rid of it, but Sean spoke up and said no, they should keep it and do it. Knowing that makes this even more epic.
It is genuinely pure genius. He knew what he had to do from the first moment to convince everyone
It's 2 shows combined. They did a crossover night where Channel 4 did obscure versions of shows for charity.
Countdown was the first show ever on Channel 4... In it's simplest form, it's a puzzle show making words from random selections of letters and randomly selected sum totals from random selections of numbers. It's bit nerdy formal and orderly and shown mid afternoon.
The show you're watching clips from is basically that gameshow (format) with the regular guests from 8 Out Of 10 Cats - a comedy/celebrity panel show with questions based on surveys and polls... The title comes from the tagline of an advert "8 out of 10 cats prefer Whiskers" (a catfood brand). It's chaotic and funny and shown late night.
So this show that you're watching clips from, the combination of 2 old shows, was just meant to be a one-off crossover but people seemed to like it. It's like a formal afternoon tea with the grand parents that somehow turned into a rave, but for some reason it works.
Sean won it in the first five seconds when he pretended to reach inside for a carrot that wasn't there. Genius
Sean Lock was an absolute genius comedian- the way he conjures images and his child like love of being inappropriate and saying exactly the wrong thing at exactly the right time made him my favourate comedian. The RNLI is a charity (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) that often collects money for lifeboats- so it is held in high standing, which is why saying he embezelled them is so wrong/funny.
Sean lock was Legend, naturally funny. As others say "carrot in a box 2" 🥕🥕

Find the video where Jimmy asks him if he could bring anyone back who would it be and he says the Nazis. Freaking hilarious. Sean comes out of left field with stuff. You never see it coming and it's always brilliantly funny.

Comedy is just about the only thing the Uk excels at nowadays. So much comedic genius from a small island just North of Europe. Such variety even our politicians are hilarious in a sad sad way.
Funny thing is when they pitched the game both Jimmy and Jon didn’t want to do it, said there was nothing in the segment (no comedic value) but Sean said they should do it, convinced the other two to do it and this was the result, Sean made it hilarious, you definitely need to watch some of his other stuff
Yeah I hears that it was Sean who wanted to do it as well, Sean was a comic genius and he saw comedy where others did not. Even when doing stand up all the other comics would come out just to watch Sean performing. There will never be another like Sean that's for sure

A male friend on Facebook had a picture photoshopped of his face on womens body posted to his page, so of course I commented “that’s a challenging………” it’s almost become an everyday saying.
I love the way that Jon Richardson ( a very very funny guy) is happy to play the straight man to Sean Lock's genius as people knew when to give him his head. You have to watch Sean imagining Nazi Island as a telly program to really see his subversive humour at its best

I was criminally late to watching this show regularly and missed out on a lot of Shaun but I saw enough to appreciate his genius. A naturally funny, charming guy whilst not giving a sh@t.

This idea had NO RIGHT to work......it was an awful premise and a rubbish game.....YET Sean Lock made that game his own to the extent that even thoguh Lee Mack took over the mantle after his passing...........Sean Lock is king. He MADE that game work. He has the look of someone who will come round and clean your gutters but has such an off-the-wall sense of humour that he catches you off guard every time. His stand-up is well worth a butchers at.
Try Jon Wilkinson's poem "Hanging About in a Station Toilet, Naming People's Penises" on the same show. It's literally fall off the sofa funny. It even reduced Sean Locke to tears!
FYI. "8 out of 10 cats" derived from a long long running advert for cat food. Which claimed that "8 out of 10 cats preferred Whiskers."

Believe it or not but according to Jimmy, Carrot in a Box was pitched as a REAL game show on Channel four, but was binned for being too dumb... In a production meeting, SEAN was the one who said "We have to do this"

Also - please take a look at The Inbetweeners (show) - word of warning tthough, it's very British and utter filth :) and Greg Davis, who is a comedian and was on the show too as a teacher, which he used to be in real life before becoming a comedian
