This was a true classic. Was praying that Kim get her Swan-song with a final Aussie title, but Azarenka totally earned this one!

Sidd Sakhamuri what are you talking about, Kim Clijsters was the defending champion here! She had three US Open titles and one Australian Open title?

@@Munkyjoe1 Yes, that's exactly why I said that I was praying for Kim to get "A FINAL" aussie title before she retired.

You could see this coming if you watched Wimbledon 2011 Azarenka looked like she was going to win that in the semis

Kim obviously is a superior player to Azarenka. It was already a miracle she got to this round, after rolling her ankle badly earlier in the tournament. She still managed to play at a good level and maybe could have gotten to the final.

Clijsters rolled her angle HARD earlier in this tournament and she could not play full out. Had she been healthy she would have defended her title easily.

THIS WAS A GREAT MATCH. Imagine if Clijsters had won, would Sharapova have won the final? Or could have Clijsters defended it

Clijsters was injured here, if she was full strength Sharapova has no chance on a hard court against her.

@@JamesFrew1 hahahahahah did you know Sharapova won their last 4 out of 5 meetings and 3 of them all won on hardcourts? Clijsters were 4-0 at one point of their h2h meeting, that was up until the 2006 Final of San Diego. And I would like to remind you, the 2006 Wta tour was a highly competitive season, minus both Serena and Venus appearances to complete the seasons all year playing tournament that ends during the final 2006 wta tour championship. It was a year that produces a superbly entertaining close race between the three different grand slam champions, Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin AND Maria Sharapova. The year before, in 2005 the ITF named Kim Clijsters as the world champion in wta tour and she ended up no 2 in the rankings narrowly being beaten by Lindsay Davenport. In 2006, we saw Martina Hingis also coming back to the tour, and there were several Russian players who did produce some consistent results, Nadia Petrova, Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova and last but not least, the 2005 ITF world champion and US OPEN Champion Kim Clijsters back as well rounding the top 8 of the best players in no particular order. So, we all now knew Clijsters was 4-0 ahead right, then starting on from the final of San Diego a few weeks before Sharapova was at her peak, winning the 2006 US OPEN replacing Kim, the final was a first mark of victory that solidify Maria's confidence and winning moment. Why? Because she won the title, just like she won the US open which was won by Kim. And Kim withdrew afterward not defending the US open, but their previous match was already a big deal that has proven by many more subsequent matches that Sharapova has been progressing ahead of Clijsters in terms of the strength in their game. Their next match was the RR match of 2006 Wta final, Sharapova in straight sets, followed by the 2007 AO SF when Maria was injured and lost in the final while thrashing Clijsters in straight sets too, but Clijsters got her revenge by beating Sharapova who was on a match point at one point before Clijsters captured the title in three sets. Maria came back from an injury in 2009 after a long break. Then, 2012 Olympics she was also beaten down in 2 sets in their only grass court h2h match. I dont thinko you do understand the game if you think Clijsters will overcome Sharapova so easily because based on their level of play in h2h meetings, I would summarize their first 4 encounter was their early stage of knowing each others opponent, while Sharapova has been known to be a hard hitter and booming groundstrokes, her game was indeed one dimensional without any other B,C or D game to compensate her strategy if her A game isnt working well. Meanwhile, Clijsters had more variety and a fast sprinter, she can defend effectively. The next 4 matches between them were their Climax part, Sharapova already figured out Clijsters game and uses her 2nd serves to even win her free points on serve. She improved her forehand and her movement was a lot better. The last two, 1-1 to each player was their comeback stage, as both were by now can be considered veterans. But Maria had more dominant control and aggression among these two. So, how about you revisit their previous matches and laugh at this comment you just wrote years ago?

deepak mahajan clijsters has way more power and craft. She can hit a winner after a slide from behind the baseline. This only very few female player is capable of doing this. And although she plays at baseline most of the time, her pace is one of the fastest on tour and can accelerate on both wing and can create big shot and her net shot is highly developed in doubles as well.
