Having your name of the back of a pack of Ernie Ball strings is the ultimate. I have sat and read the names my whole life, you are a very lucky man. Love the videos, keep up the awesome work!!
Christian Schmitt that’s what people played back in the jazz days, usually 12-60 for standard, but kids weren’t able to learn comfortably so early ball created light strings, also known as the slinky’s. Tony Iomi of Black Sabbath did the same thing, he took all the strings and moved them down, and replaced the high e with a banjo string.
I've been using the D'Addario 60-12 set for C standard and it works really well. Problem with most string sets is that they are great for standard tuning but the difference between the lowest and second lowest string isn't large enough to ideally aim for a drop tuning. Maybe these strings will be the go-to for drop tunings.
@@OrlandoAponte I always buy a set of 9s, order a 54/56 string and use that as bottom, using the bottom from the nines as a fifth, the fifth as a fourth, then use the normal unwound string for 3, 2 and 1. Then it's drop D then whammy DT to wherever i want to go. I'd love a string pack like that but i don't know how much all guitarists are interested in thin top strings but super thicc bottom strings
You could. But I used steel chains for a while and I'll tell you... Say goodbye to tuning stability. They're also pretty hard to slide on. I also tried telephone lines, but they're really expensive, especially if you make international calls. I'm now using 50-ton test steel cable. Now that stuff...pure tone. These strings are good too, I suppose.
I've played on acoustic for about 10 years and just picked up an electric rig from a pawn shop. When I went to string it I grabbed ernie ball strings specifically due to you. I since have decided to go to a heavier string since I find my self in Eb or D tuning regularly. I will again grab ernie ball. Thank you for being an influence in honing my craft.
wound G is stupid and for people who dont wanna practice fretting properly, queens of the stone age doesnt use a wound G for C standard, pelican doesnt use a wound G for B standard...you're not going to solo properly with a wound G, you can move the string the same distance (which will be tougher to do) but that same distance of movement wont get the same pitch raising as the same distance of movement with an unwound. its not just a matter of tension. they make 24 gauge unwound strings so there should be no problem regardless of your tension preferences
@@Psyfonify It's not usually about the tension, it's about the tone. Unwound G strings above a 20 or so start to get an odd sounding twang to them that a lot of people don't like, and in a lot of cases people would rather have the darker sound of a wound one than deal with that. And that's without mentioning the tuning issues that an unwound G can have. Wound Gs can also sound nice for chords, and not everyone solos heavily enough or in the right style to need a plain string's bendability (Or in cases like mine, they just learn to do it with the more difficult bends anyway. Bending bass strings prepped me for that)
@@Psyfonify I disagree strongly, the wound g actually stays in tune unlike the unwound and like these guys above me said it gets rid of that annoying twang sound and it gives you more of a tight darker sound instead. And don’t feed anybody that bullshit lol it does not affect your solos or your playing. If that were the case this set wouldn’t have a wound G.
I used to use the regular slinky set to play stuff in drop b and drop a, cus I didn't know much about string gauges. After this video I picked up a pack, and playing in those tunings sounds SO much better! I love the thickness of the strings, it really makes my guitar feel like its meant to be dropped this low. Not to mention the wound G string is awesome, I wasn't sure how I would like it, but now i don't think I can go back. Thank you for the video, even 4 years later you're helping people out!
I’ve used Ernie ball’s “not even slinky” (12-56) strings on my 25.5” guitar in drop A and it’s a little loose but definitely still tolerable so it’s crazy to think that there are people who use like 13-64 for stuff like drop C but I guess to each his own
These have become my favorites. Ordered a set last year and tested them on an ancient Epi LPjr, fell in love. Turned out even better on my Hellraiser FR in Drop B. Never played on strings that stay in tune like these do. Even with the Floyd bottomed out they just snap back like nothing happened. Fantastic job.
I once made a custom set that I used for e an octave below. It was 56, 48, 38, 28, 18 and 14. It felt good and held tune pretty well. Now, I'm using the Mammoth Slinky strings on my Soloist and keeping it in standard. It plays quite nicely after I set it up.
ive been running Stringjoy string packs for years now, they do custom packs for literally anyone, literally any guage from a 90 to a 7. i recently had them wind me a 7-string pack of bass strings that had a 35 inch scale wound 18, and at one point i actually had a 135 custom wound guitar string for drop D0 on a standard strat for playing 12ftninja. yes, drop D in the bass octave, on a 6-string guitar with a 25.5 scale. i went there. didnt work very well long term but the strings were fine. you just go to stringjoy and use the custom selector and drop and drag the guages you want. you want 6 E-strings? done. you want 2 90's a 45, and and 3 8's for some bizarre shit? they got ya.
Just got these for the first time and put them on my ltd ec 1000. These are perfect for B standard and drop B!!!! This set is brilliant!! Thank you fluff!!
I just started using these on my LTD viper in B standard 24 3/4" scale i believe. The best off the rack strings i have found for B standard that fits my playing style and my barbarian picking hand. I could do with a 64 or 65 thou, i do drop the low B to A occasionally.
Cool glad you guys created the Mammoth set. I throw a 9 on top and found its perfect in B standard and drop A on my 7 string (26.5 scale). I also use the 10-62 set for A standard on my other guitar. Both perfect.
@Chomiqu I agree with you Daddario 11-56 is phenomenal in perfect tension for Drop C on a short scale, ideal for bending leads and bottom strings excellent for Riffs with thick low end without becoming too thick the strings. Unfortunately to get that same tension and feeling on a scale 25.5 ", you need a set of 10-56 and it is not available either in daddario or ernie ball, I have to buy two sets to be able to have it. They lack in the portfolio to have included the set 10,13,17,30,42,56 Hopefully one day this available, since they only lack that set to be complete all the options for Drop tunigs and normal.
@@butcher_0392 I had exactly the same issue with 25.5 scale. I couldn't get the same tension with any existing set. Either the bass side was little too loose or the first 3 strings were too stiff.
Late to the party, but I wanted to share that as much as I tried to use these on a 30 inch scale baritone build, the 62 gauge string kept breaking at the tuning peg if I took the string off to make any adjustments. Fair warning, once they're on, leave them on. The core of the string is a thin piece of metal the size of a twist-tie for a loaf of bread, haha!
Back in the day I was using 11-56 for drop B and 12-60 for drop A by another company before I came back to Ernie Ball when they came out with the not even slinky's. So now I use the not even slinky's for drop B and the Mammoth slinky's for drop A.
for decades I bought the regular slinky , and a buncha 62s and sort of leave the 10 gauge lying around in random places ( or strangers gig bags) , then I left for d'addario who have been way better at serving this market the last 6-7 years. However, every string set ever produced , by anyone , has this mad mix of string tensions I never understood (still don't) usually the middle 2 strings are way more taut than everything else which grinds my gears. ***This set actually goes some way to addressing this! good work!*** definitely prize worthy. I''m still not an Ernie ball customer though as since leaving Ernie ball behind I have bought baritones and Ernie ball are obsessed with making their strings as perilously short as possible, seriously guys just one inch longer! I'll pay the extra! no? ok D'Addario it is.
Dude! I literally just bought ernie's 62-10 7 string cobalt set 2 days ago. I have a 6 string 25.5" set up for B standard and I just throw away the 10 gauge. This set is perfect for what I need!
Bro, I saw these online few weeks ago, saw a wound 24 and 62 top for a sixer and thought “who was the damn genius who put this together” I play a 25.5 schecter in drop B and ordered 5 packs on the spot. Nice to know who was behind it, thank you sir, they are just perfect i doubt ill buy a different set again.
Actually pretty excited about these i fell inlove with the paradigm line for my shorter scale for my drop c and c# but now i can have reliable strings for my other two six strings for drop B! Thanks for the review!
I'm way too used to light strings man. I've been playing for 11 years, and for a long time I used 9's for E, Eb, and drop D. I've recently beefed up to 10's, especially for rhythm playing and Eb. I use the Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom (10-52) for drop C and it honestly feels really really stiff and heavy in the bottom end.
No lie I use a 11 gauge 7 string set with the 4th string thrown out and a .72 bass string for my 6th string playing Drop C on 24.75”. Feels like I have greater control when soloing and it thickens my P90s.
I play in D Standard and use 9-46. Helps keeps everything tightened up and shaves off quite a bit of noise. Also make vibrato like a million times more fun if you have jumbo frets
This makes me happy. I used to always use Earnie ball until I dropped to B. I was forced to use d’addario exl158 baritone. Similar gauges with a wound 3rd. I’ll definitely be trying these. Cheers fluff
I put these on my SG and I can go from D standard all the way to drop A, with some floppiness but it’s manageable. My SG is now my heavy music when my 7 string is just too much.

Ernie Ball Medium Light Nickel Wound Pack #2206 = 12, 16, 24wound!, 32, 44, 54. Ernie Ball Medium Gauge Nickel Wound Pack #2204 = 13, 17, 26wound!, 34, 46 56. Been using these sets for a decade! Very affordable. Double Drop C for years and years! Definitely want to try out the Mammoths!
funny thing, i just ordered those from ebay and i was wondering if somebody ever tried them. that's how i found this video. other funny thing is that i'm already subscribed to the channel
First off congrats on being apart of this. Maybe for your next FAQ, if you're a player who still plays leads but likes to tune down, would strings be a good choice? I grew up with my dad always saying you want a plain G string, not a wound one. And the way people are using the term drop b is really starting to annoy me. Some people use the term drop b to describe the tuning where only the low E is dropped to B and the other 5 strings are in standard, while others use it to describe being tuned to C# standard with a dropped d, or and more accurately a B. Which one do you use? And which one should be used? Dropped B standard verses drop B? And is drop C just drop D down a whole step or simply dropping your low E to a C? Drop C to me is dropped D down a whole step, you can see how this can get confusing
This is awesome!! i have been using the cobalts 7 string set. 10-62 i throw away the 10 and tune to b standard . i have loved the wound G string . the 62 is the absolute biggest i can fit through the tuning peg. so this new may be just perfect for me. i wouldn't have found these for a while if it weren't for your video.. thank you so much.
For drop b I used the not even slinky set the last several months and loved them. But when you forget to keep up with the inventory you gotta make the 10-46s work. 😓 The first 30 minutes within practicing was complete hell for me, as I tried to adjust how much pressure I had to apply, and put on this set to play. Talk about a dramatic life changing experience. 😭😭😭😭..........*Silently Cries*
I just got a set of the Mammoth strings. I can not wait to get my new pickups in and these strings on!!! Do you know, is there an all wound string set? If there is, I can not find them. Hope EVERYONE out there is well who reads this. Be cool, be safe and for gods sake be good to each other. I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!
DJisaBaker667 I play the same tuning and string and I have the same problem with mine... Currently waiting until I break a string so I have an excuse to open a fresh pack of these and try the wound one
Got my first set of these, put them on a fell in love with them! My 25.5" scale can do drop b better but can go down to A# with ease!! Thanks Fluff been looking for a set like this for a while! Good work buddy!!!!
stupid newb question.. last time I tried the heavier gage strings (I typically switch between drop A#, drop B and drop C), I was about finished tuning the thickest string to B, I chugged on it a few times to let the tension find a settling point where it was gonna STAY on B, it was maybe the 4th or 5th chug and my guitar busted a nut... literally... the nut busted, or shattered top 2 notches off, rather. I've been a bit gun shy from attempting the heavier gage strings since then. I'm liking the idea of the mammoth strings though. If I string up say my little ibanez RG with them, am I doomed to busting yet another nut? I feel like I only have but a couple nuts to spare for experimenting...
Hell yeah that's perfect for e standard
Supreme Cadet we can finally advance and go F standard... half step up from e standard that is

Couldn’t wait for these to show up so I bought single strings and copied this set. Works wonders for me in drop A with my USA Mick Thomson Jackson
funny thing, i just ordered those from ebay and i was wondering if somebody ever tried them.
that's how i found this video.
other funny thing is that i'm already subscribed to the channel
just ordered a used ESP Eclipse 401 that the owner before installed fishmans in, thinking I may try these on it for Drop C.
That intro never gets old
Sweet! I have been waiting for a set like this for a long time.
I'm ordering a few packs right now. Been wanting something like this for ages! Thanks, Fluff!
I’ve always used D’Addario EXL148 (12-60) for standard B tuning but i think i will have to check these out especially for the wounded third string!!
took me 2 months, just picked up a couple packs today, ready to try these out!
I've got a 28 scale baritone and I would love to check these out. I like to get away with as light as possible gauges when I play that boi.
Stringjoy will let you choose the gauge of each string in the set. I like my 10 to 60 set for drop B.
I'm debating between this set or the Ernie Ball Magnum slinky for B standard on a 25.5" scale.
I use a set of 12-60 and one 72, tuned to mostly A#. I like a lot of tension on the strings
I used that set for Drop G on my Paulie. When I should've used it for Drop B😂
I might get these this Saturday on Amazon
Just got two packs at guitar center today! I play in A# on 25.5 inch scale length guitars! So stoked on these!
They actually sound pretty great too
Hey, thanks for sharing this... Do you fix the grooves of the nut? Or it's not needed...
Used to use their baritone set (that's 13-72) for E standard on a 25.5"
Wow this is awesome. This is almost exactly what I order myself, even with the wound 24.
Tell your buddy to make thicker sets for 7 and 8 string guitars. 8 string set especially is way too thin.
have you tried the 9-80 set for 8 string? Works wonders with my "standard" scale of 26.5" on the 8 string.
I use the “not even slinky” for C# standard but I hate the g(e?) string. Swapped it out with a 28 wound and it was much better.
DJisaBaker667 I play the same tuning and string and I have the same problem with mine... Currently waiting until I break a string so I have an excuse to open a fresh pack of these and try the wound one
I'm ordering some Stringjoy 13-68s for mine and some 12-56s to see which one i like better. Hopefully i get the chunky sound I'm looking for
I have to try them in my 26'5" Solar for Drop A!!
Have you tried? Also thinking about Drop A for 26,5 as 12-60 is a little bit floppy on 6-th
I bought these and remember tuning em to drop c# (it was on a fender scale length)
I feel like I only have but a couple nuts to spare for experimenting...
that is so cool that that string is wound.. usually its so thick and does not stay in tune and not comfortable to play
Just out of curiosity because I'm getting some for Christmas is it able to do D standard tuning? I know I sound crazy but I don't use D standard
getting some of those ordered
Lol, I love my 9s in standard tuning
Hi, what is the tuning that you have used in the riffs you are playing in this video?
Thank you bearded riffman and fellow guitarist. Glad you made a vid on these considering you do excellent reviews. 🤘🤘🤘💯💯💯
This set in paradigm please 🙌😮
