Understandable. Especially in a formal occasion. If allowed, however, give them a great tip.
Any other occasion, I would still pick it up, but discreetly, wrap the utensil in my napkin, and hold it on my lap, until the waitstaff came and collected it. It feels impolite to get them to retrieve it, when I am perfectly capable.
