If you’re looking to increase your hives & sell your honey, you might want to build a Swiss bee house. You can work with your hives at any time or in any weather. The guard bees are protecting their entrances on the outside of the house, so when you come in from the back (inside the house) they barely notice. You can also store all your beekeeper stuff inside with your hives. I just found out about them & if I am ever able to keep bees, that’s how I’d do it.

The pigs look happy rolling in the wallow. Turning up the soil for roots to eat, the pigs are the very best to clear a lot of brush and weeds. It's a pig pen and truly lives up to the name.

you could use the other side of the tyre you used for the feeder base and attach your sheet iron roof to it with roofing screws for an easy attach/detach roof. Should sit nicely on top of the barrel!
Hi don't mean to poke, but, few Ideas : 1 : kinda like a queen separater but a bit more compact like grill in the bottom of the box that you shave the wax into might help so as you work it starts to separate already, 2 : see if you can string up some shade cloth up or around your field with a gutter @ the bottom so even though it might be dry when the morning & late night mist comes through you can collect on some moisture for your seedlings
I'm 5'2" and my hives are tall like yours. My only issue with my langs is i just keep stacking and can't lift any of them off. So frame by frame to pull anything thats capped. Extract and put back on to refill. Extracted about 15 or so capped frames from 2 hives last month. Time to do it again. All mediums 6-7 boxes high and no excluder. Standing on nuc box to get the top off. I have a few top bar hives and one horizontal lang hive too. My stacks don't swarm but my top bars did.
The queen excluder. I don't use them either and I agree they can be a hassle and might cause more issues than needed. I actually found that my colonies will make their own line where they determine where the queen stops and honey begins. I have a lot of colonies and going through every single one to check on swarm cells with excluders is time consuming and a hassle for the bees as well. People often forget bees are a natural thing and they need a little help but generally they know what to do better than we do
You mentioned that one hive was a caught swarm. Are all your hives caught swarms or just that one? I’ve been told that native bees or caught swarms do better than package bees. From your experience what do you think?
Just the one unfortunately. Yes, swarms from "native" or wild colonies are better. This hive tends to overwinter with a small population, saving honey. Right now they're producing like crazy. Package bees (at least mine), tend to overwinter with a large population, so they eat more honey. Also, some wild hives are more mite resistant (not sure if this one is because I treat them all).
I have 8 hives I use queen excluders and average 80 lbs of honey per hive and no wax moth issues in my supers because they have never had brood. Just different methods of bee keeping.

No. Killing queen cells won't prevent swarms. They will build more cells and swarm anyway. You'll likely miss one, and it's labor intensive finding all those cells. I have heard that you might even end up with a queenless hive if they decide to swarm anyway.
Not that often really. Maybe once every month or two. Just depends on the season. I can learn a lot about what's going on inside a hive by watching the activity outside of it. I can learn just about everything about the hive by looking at a brood frame.

No, it will just attract pests. The only way to catch bees in a box is to catch a swarm. You can use some hive frames with comb on them and a swarm lure. However, if it is not swarm season in your area you probably will not catch anything. You need to find yourself a local beekeeper who is willing to be a mentor. He or she might also be willing to give/sell you a hive to get started. Let me know how it goes!
Thank goodness no flat tires or hornet's nests! I saw vines on the trees falling down - are any of those vines poison ivy, oak or sumac? It gave me the willies since I am so allergic to those things. I was jealous of the honey tasting you got to do.
There are two types of swarms. One is the standard spring swarm which how the bees create other hives and spread. In that case, the bees make several queen cells to produce a new queen. After the queen cells are capped, the hive swarms with the old queen...they find a new home and start a new colony. At the mother hive, the first new queen to hatch will destroy the others. She will fly out of the hive, mate with drone bees (the males), then come back and never leave the hive again (unless she swarms later). The second type of swarm is an overcrowding swarm. Basically, the bees run out of space due to too much brood or too much honey (or both).

I still have it...but I really love the power steering on the Kubota. Plus, it's in need of some maintenance.

No, I use oxalic acid vaporization. I've never had stronger hives.

Trim the grass in front of the entrance for line of sight for the bees. Yes this important coming from experience.

They're all mediums. The top 2-3 are the honey supers, the rest is the brood (3-4 boxes).
kubota designed the loader to stay on the tractor. it does not hurt it at all

Most of the vines here are wild muscadines...thats the one you saw fall. Though there's plenty of poison too.

You put diesel in a gasoline can? I try to keep those in the correct cans so there are no mistakes.
I do. I usually just grab whichever one is empty. I did put a cup or two of gas in my Kubota one day though, so I can see the danger.
You should hang a swarm trap. Could catch a wild swarm, nothing like free bee's!
