Heya! I'm a construction worker and i work with heavy machinery on a regular basis. That excavator's 'fixed joint' is actually fully accurate! Excavators don't have a joint there, but they *do* have an angle on the arm at that point to make it easier to dig with. Excavators will typically only have 3 joints; The 'shoulder' (base), 'Elbow' (middle piston) and 'Knuckle'/bucket. Though some excavators do have additional ones. Smaller ones will have a vertical swivel at the shoulder that allows the arm to move side to side, some have an extension at the second joint like some rubber-tire backhoes do, and occasionally you'll find excavators outfitted with a crab claw, which is this weird metal claw part that goes over top the bucket with its own piston that they use to grab stuff with.
Oh hey, that's awesome! Designers clearly did their research then, and that's great to see. So now I'm even more curious to know your answer: what kind of construction City set would you most like to see?
@CheeseyStudios Honestly, I'd love to see a loader! They're Ike the big cousins of forklifts and bulldozers with massive wheels and a joint in the middle as opposed to traditional steering. They can be outfitted with forks or a bucket depending in the need :)
@@JoshuaNorth-yc5bx Thanks for the explanation on the workings and realism of the excavator. It is so nice to get some more in-depth stuff behind a set like this!
the construction subtheme of City always felt so universally useful to me. not only are they solid sets, they're the perfect thing to display with WIP builds
For sure I can relate. Construction vehicles and trains most of all. Although it is fun to design and make larger buildings with Lego. City lends itself even more to customizing your own little 'town' or 'city' than most themes.
And true to life, they don't overly like turning, I've seen one in my city a few times; they had to close entire streets so the damn thing could turn. Was incredible to see it in person, would not want to deal with it in traffic though.
These both feel like actual minifigure scaled construction vehicles and I love it! As charming as the older construction sets are, I enjoy more realism as well.
I work for a construction equipment company, and I really like that elephant logo... Cool, but also very reflective of actual construction company logos you see on real equipment.
Having both of these sets and spending my childhood playing with them, it's so great to see kids today finally have the same opportunity with sets that look as amazing as this. The play features have been retained and upgraded and the price seems fair as well. Love to see it
Construction is probably the best subtheme for Lego City. I grow weary of Police and Fire, since you don't need as many of those as they've released and they really stretch what both of those services actually provide. The space-city stuff was just "WTF", while Construction? You can never have enough construction vehicles in a city, and they're pretty much universal.
i was actually stunned to see the new construction sets from lego city, it was like a hit of nostalgia when i first saw them in the lego store. honestly warms my heart!
The construction City theme always makes me nostalgic for that browser game they had, where you had to move different vehicles to their areas, like an ambulance to the hospital, an excavator to the construction site, etc. It'd be interesting to see this sort of division within the City sets nowadays, specially with this huge step up in their engineering.
I got that old mobile crane in 2017 at a flea market in germany for 35€, qround 90%complete. I was like ten at the time and didnt know abt bricklink and didnt know whqt gem i had found. Was definitely a big part of my childhood, a set older than me.
In childhood i’ve had 3 city construction sets - 7248 excavator, 7905 crane and 7900 bridge transporter. This video reminded me huge number of stories and models which were made of parts from these sets, old good times). Even in 2000s lego sets had many little details, for example design of old porta potty and small second service building was shockingly simple but well done
One of my holy grail sets I never got the chance to get is the tower crane. Hopefully TLG continues this line of sets and releases a new Tower crane in that color scheme with a full line of vehicles including a steam roller, bulldozer and cement mixer to name a few
the only reason why the mobile crane don't have a turning joint int he middle it's because of the crane arm, you can't bend them and that's why the stearing wheel are like the 8 wheels in the front, it's usually use for heavy lifting but not great to drive trought the city.
It's great that they're starting to put a lot more effort into city construction sets. The world is bleeding construction workers every year. Fewer people are getting into construction and this will help interest kids in the construction industry
Seeing Cheesy so excited for these new construction sets is exactly how I felt when I saw Lego make a new Space sub theme for City back in January. I grew up with Galaxy Squad & Space Police 3 so it was really nice to see Lego make a new space sub theme after 10 years, even if it was branded as City.
I remember getting th eXXL crane on my birthday from parents. Being 8 yo in Poland getting a set like this in 2005 was a dream. Before i didnt even knew such set existed. That said is till keep it somewhere to date and i love it. Cool little this is that XXL has a cargo space behind cabin to fit all those cones and barrier. Amazing set ot say the least. Created lot of memories from childhood Dont forget the steamroller, the cheapest set from Construction line this year
The mobile Crane looks almost exactly like liebherrs ltm 1750 heavy mobile Crane minuse one set of wheels. Has same support X style outriggers same single axle under the swivel section same style cab and similar counter weight arrangement.
i have both the old crane and excavator since i was a kid, and as an adult now i love these new ones so much! id say they look like an improvement definitely :)
You have absolutely sold me on these two. I liked the look of them but wasn't sure if I wanted to get them but now I'm going to try my best to get them. Being a university student, my chances are not particularly high but I'll definitely get these two eventually. Here's to a bulldozer and cement mixer in this style!
The Excavator is such a great set. I love just how accurate it is, and I'm incredibly tempted to buy it for my birthday this year. We'll have to see if I ultimately decide on that, but currently I think I will.
these sets look unbelievably amazing. so smooth and well designed, so many fun cool parts usages and detailing, cool play features / functions, etc. These are among some of the best executed and cleanest sets lego has done.
I technically own the old mobile crane. My grandma has a bunch of old lego ranging from the 1980's to 2005 or so. A couple of the old cool pieces were stolen by other children (we have a lot of cousins), and most of the instructions are gone, but they apparently still had some instructions. Included was the mobile crane instructions, and it answered so many questions of where so many pieces came from, along with the two passenger planes they have, though those instructions are gone. It's really cool to actually see that set in physical form, as I don't think I have all lthe pieces to rebuild it. It doesn't even have the stickers attached. Cool to see that they rebuilt it, and man I know child me would've loved to have that excavator.
When the leaks of these sets appeared in early May, I knew they would be an instant buy for me. So I managed to pick them up as soon as they came out. The excavator has an excellent level of detail and offers a good playability, same goes for the crane, however the biggest flaw of it is the mounting of the crane to the ,,transporter", which is causing the tilt everytime the load is even slighty heavier than porta-potty included in the set. I hope these sets are the beggining of new construction subtheme, I would love to see a road roller of some kind or a new dump-truck.
I haven’t bought a City set in years, and I have no interest in starting my own LEGO City. But these sets are just so well-made I am tempted to get both.
This feel like semi-Technic set, mostly cause Construction sets have such a big presence in Technic and these make use of a lot of technic pieces for the movable play features.
Since I saw these new sets coming soon I’ve been so excited. Lego city construction was a staple of my childhood and I really hope construction stays because these are awesome sets. Just executed so well with immense detail. All in all hope lego goes in this direction because these are just so great
LEGO city construction returning in a substantial way is brilliant You wouldn't have all those police and fire stations if not for construction workers and heavy machinery!
Idk, there just something about heavy machinery that lego doesn't make enough of. Someday, I'll get my technic mobile crane mk.2 out of the closet and put it back together.
The excavator (new vs old) feels like each has their own speciality. The old has more play features, the new looks way smoother. But yeah, the new crane is just a straight up improvement on all the cool stuff the original already had (sans the hinge in the center)
The construction sub-theme is my favorite to see what Lego comes out with next. I would love to see a bucket truck in the modern style. I know there was a poly bag version but I am unsure of a full-size set. Also GECKO!
Something about that yellow-orange with black makes it so…completed i guess? Always likes construction legos like u, but never really got any when they were around
@@CheeseyStudios I will argue that the CMF "Tournament Knight" figure was the first to showcase this awesome colour combination and draw attention to its amazing possibilities.
You see I have got that blue Lego CITY crane and still haven't built it yet. I feel it has it advantages over the CONSTRUCTION crane in 2024, but I have major admiration for both the 2024 construction sets so far. I am happy to agree the older digger still has advantages!
It's genuinely puzzling why construction isn't an evergreen subtheme for City. Unless kids' tastes have changed dramatically in the last decade or so, I can't see why this wouldn't be popular year after year. Construction work is something kids will have seen, it's part of their real life and yet it's so absent from LEGO City. There hasn't been a proper wave of City construction sets since 2015, which is crazy. And as lovely as these two sets (three if we include the small steamroller from January) are, it's not a "real" wave of sets either, which is disappointing. One can only hope that this is LEGO testing the waters before committing to bringing the subtheme back properly, like it deserves.
I Get that Lego is supposed to be reusable but why can’t they print the stickers on the blocks themself like they did before on the old control blocks they never faded and was always perfectly placed
I'm a fan of the construction sets too, but I lost interest when they downsized the scale about 15 years ago. My first sets as an adult collector (around 2005) was a mobile crane (this one! 7:28 ), and a couple of smaller diggers (this one! 3:13 ). My most impressive is probably the giant bulldozer from around 2005-2008, which was just before the shrinkflation kicked in. That thing is close to a foot long. It's a monster. I also have a few Technic construction vehicles from around 2008, which was a great time for Lego. Power Miners, Agents.. lots of good stuff.
Amazing video, I'm glad you compared them with the 2005 sets, the XXL crane was one of my favorite sets back in the day! The shift in design philosophy is pretty clear when looking at them side by side, but honestly I love both. Also just wanted to note that the huge technic crane also only had plastic weights at the back, it is one of the most disappointing parts of the set. Keep up the great work!
“And then a three year gap until last year” Set #60324: “Am I a joke crane to you?” Jp, another great review and these sets are gorgeous! First city sets in a while I’ve been excited to go out of my way to get 🤘🏼
Construction was my favorite City subtheme growing up - I have owned 9 different construction sets over the years - some I no longer have, or have lost many of the pieces to (keep in mind I built MOC's out of these), and I always found construction-related MOC's especially fun to build! I had the 7630 Front Loader, 7631 Dump Truck, 7632 Crawler Crane, 7633 Construction Site, and 7746 Single-Drum Roller, all 2009 sets, and years later, I got the 60073 Service Truck, 60074 Bulldozer, and 60152 Sweeper and Excavator. I also had the 60018 Cement Mixer from 2013, and while Lego technically listed that as a Traffic set, it fit right in with my construction sets perfectly!
Aww man, a Tracked excavator in '05? I grew up with the 4 wheeled excavator from like '98, when the clicky adjustable peices were introduced and the new (for then) wide yellow/black buckets. The only tracked set I ever got was the Arctic snowplough set. Man that was cool. These new sets have seriously been tempting, whenever I see them at the supermarket or whatever, but just no storage or display room for them :(
11:50 Interesting fact about those types of vehicles, when the front wheels turn one way the back wheels turn the opposite way to provide easier turning
I was not expecting it either, that's the fun part about it! I was originally gonna lump all the City sets together, but these two definitely deserve their own video.
@@pinobluevogel6458 Yes! I understand that some reviewers (maybe even "many") want to remain dispassionate with their reviews, but man, it really changes the whole perception of a set when you see someone get legit excited/happy about the set they are reviewing.
And here I thought I was the only mesmerized by Lego City construction sets from the late 2000s. Honestly those sets from 08 were my childhood and became the gateway drug for me being interested in other Lego themes haha
one of the first lego sets I really remember getting was the early 2000s construction site with the crane and transporter truck that excavator looks great
I just love the Elephant logo as a legally distinct knockoff of Big Cat so there's no licensing required. Also come on, Elephant is way better than a Cat, they're literally nature's excavator/crane/bulldozer/etc. Perfect choice.
I appreciate how realistic the sets are and how Lego put time and effort into making them playable and beautiful at the same time. I think they should really do the same for the first responder's sublines, seeing as it would pay respects to irl ones, as well as showing kids how awesome that stuff can be when done realistically
I've owned the XXL mobile crane since i was a kid, so the new set brings me joy. The last lego city wave also did that, with the police crime lab truck.
IMO: Lego City should be focusing on playability and not trying to fit in as many details as possible. That's why the models in the 2000s were the best. If I want an accurate excavator or mobile crane, I might as well get a proper Revell model or something like that. The price difference isn't huge either.
I can definitely get behind that. Personally, I love that these super-accurate models still existed, but they should be rebranded under the Icons line or something. All themes are suffering a bit from this over-detail creep, which is pretty unnecessary for lines like City, Friends, and Ninjago.
Still have the original XXL Mobile Crane set. And I've been slowly recovering all it's pieces and rebuilding it over the past couple of years during Lego binge build sessions on time off work. What's really amazing though, is that my Mom got it for my 7th birthday two years after it released on clearance at a Toy's'r'us for $27.00. The only one found anywhere around. Little did I realize I seriously lucked out with an extremely rare piece of Lego History. I just might get the new XXXL upgrade just to have them side by side. Although I'll admit the lack of any articulation at all is a serious flaw that should be remedied in customization that I will no doubt make of I get this thing. Only difference now is I have over 8 storage bins from the Container store of complete sets and disassembled bricks instead of just 20 or so sets like back in 2007 so where exactly am I gonna put this thing? 😅
If the new one could turn in any way, it would literally be perfect. Otherwise though, it is a really great improvement on everything the original had to offer.
I don't know how true this is for other people, but in Las Vegas they only inaccurate thing in these new sets is that they have people actually using the equipment. Its a shame too, because I think that the new reddish orange torsos looks so nice!
Hey, I might've missed something, but are those two floating island looking modules in the background, a hypixel skyblock moc? If so where can I check them out?
The newer model excavator is very reminiscent of Tek Blox excavator that I picked up from Menards a couple years ago for $20. That set was much more detailed but the arm was more fragile. I had been trying to make sets using pure Lego that relate to my work experience but Tek Blocks pushed me over the edge with realism and pricepoint. Happened again yesterday with an SUV that looks more like mine than the Lego Safari Off-roader. Still not a complete match but it is closer.
Not gonna lie Lego city construction sets have recently become an interest to me and I hope with these newer city construction sets we get a small bulldozer and maybe a wrecking ball but that excavator is honestly really cool and I immediately went to buy a Lego construction set after seeing this video! also your lizard is both adorable and surprising because I honestly have never seen a lizard that adorable before and now I kinda want Lego to make one for a Lego city set or at least make one for minifigure scale.
I will say one thing - the arm on the new excavator, with it's use of Technic pieces, is MUCH sturdier than the arm on the 2005 version with the ratcheted joints - those can wear out after a lot of heavy play - as evident on the excavator from my 7633 Construction Site set from my childhood which I still have. Admittedly, I took that set apart a lot and rebuilt it many times, and those pieces were used on a variety of MOC's over the years, so snapping those pieces apart and back together again over the years may have contributed to that.
At 13:10 i noticed what i think is a Skywars island on the right middle shelf, and the Skyblock portal island on the left shelf, super cool! a video on those would be pretty cool 👀but definitely wouldn't have as wide of an audience as the normal Minecraft modules, as I'm sure some have never even played on hypixel before. fun detail tho! keep up the good work
I had one of the construction cranes as a kid, couldn’t tell you exactly which but it came with a building and the amount of hours I spent playing with those, I might have to get the new one just for nostalgia

The construction sub-theme is my favorite to see what Lego comes out with next. I would love to see a bucket truck in the modern style. I know there was a poly bag version but I am unsure of a full-size set. Also GECKO!
I'm glad you're a fellow construction enjoyer as well! These sets honestly got me so hyped. They've gotta be some of my favorites so far this year
Something about that yellow-orange with black makes it so…completed i guess? Always likes construction legos like u, but never really got any when they were around
I feel I'm seeing the bright light orange in a new light. It's never looked as good as it has here!
I do need to pick up the blue crane for myself at some point. I wasn't following City closely enough and I kinda just skipped over it!
These all look wonderfully desgined, they have such minor details that really enhance the builds
now, when it comes to construction, hopefully LEGO reboots the cement mixer, I don't mean the same one, it's like new instructions and stuff
That would be awesome!
Wonder If lego is gonna Do more construction sets now
should I get the new crane or the old big construction crane for 50€ used incomplete ?
I do think the new one is better in most every way. It's easily one of my favorite models of 2024!
Set looks great. I'm getting both ! Good review and video
Even if city ain't my main theme, I'm still being impressed by all the crains, and pistons used in the "apropiate" way.
Yeah, some of the pieces they sticker do confuse me
Just this year I began my career as a heavy equipment operator so when I saw that Lego finally made a realistic excavator I was thrilled
What is the floating island in the background? I don’t know how long that’s been there but I’m just now seeing it…
Soon, very soon....
You should some stuff from Alex’s cave or something like that abyssal chasem
That bulldozer is legendary! Another one of my all-time favorite City sets
I would love to set with maybe a half built building with scaffolding and a crane🏗️
That would be really cool - a proper construction site!
Yea
Why do I get the feeling that someone is gonna make a MOC of amobile missile launcher using that construction crane as a base
Probably gonna happen lol...
“And then a three year gap until last year”
Set #60324: “Am I a joke crane to you?”
Jp, another great review and these sets are gorgeous!
These new sets have seriously been tempting, whenever I see them at the supermarket or whatever, but just no storage or display room for them :(
60324 is another fairly recent Crane set but these new construction sets are vastly better looking
Lego Construction has so much potential with all of the new pieces and elements, hopefully way more are done in the future!
Now if only we could get an airport Sub Theme. They could have my routing number!
Right? I love me some planes!!
11:50 Interesting fact about those types of vehicles, when the front wheels turn one way the back wheels turn the opposite way to provide easier turning
That's super cool! I imagine the engineering that goes into machines like these must be absolutely incredible
@CheeseyStudios they are and they are really fun to drive as well
It's always amazing watching you review sets you genuinely enjoy!
A joyful set reviewer makes for a great review. (and makes the set looks better)
I was not expecting it either, that's the fun part about it! I was originally gonna lump all the City sets together, but these two definitely deserve their own video.
@@CheeseyStudios excited for robot world????
@@pinobluevogel6458 Yes! I understand that some reviewers (maybe even "many") want to remain dispassionate with their reviews, but man, it really changes the whole perception of a set when you see someone get legit excited/happy about the set they are reviewing.
@@Ogre6972 It does. Being passionate about the thing you do is infectious and improves the quality overall.
And here I thought I was the only mesmerized by Lego City construction sets from the late 2000s. Honestly those sets from 08 were my childhood and became the gateway drug for me being interested in other Lego themes haha
the tracks are actually old skool lego
I forget how old they are sometimes - 1979!
one of the first lego sets I really remember getting was the early 2000s construction site with the crane and transporter truck
that excavator looks great
I just love the Elephant logo as a legally distinct knockoff of Big Cat so there's no licensing required. Also come on, Elephant is way better than a Cat, they're literally nature's excavator/crane/bulldozer/etc. Perfect choice.
The mammoth sticker on the crane is a wink to Mammoet.
CAT doesn't make mobile cranes.
LETS GO NEW LEGO PORTA POTTY! LOOK AT THOSE CURVES!
Just built the mobile crane, SUCH A NICE KIT. Solid, fun, good-looking, it's got it all.
Right? Definitely one of my favorite sets this year!
I appreciate how realistic the sets are and how Lego put time and effort into making them playable and beautiful at the same time. I think they should really do the same for the first responder's sublines, seeing as it would pay respects to irl ones, as well as showing kids how awesome that stuff can be when done realistically
That old XXL crane was a favourite of mine I have to put it back together at some point
I've owned the XXL mobile crane since i was a kid, so the new set brings me joy.
The last lego city wave also did that, with the police crime lab truck.
LEGO construction is just so good! I really hope we see more sets to go along with these next summer.
Hey cheese, haven't been here for awhile but I love these two new sets! I hope to get them, and great job still responding to every comment!
I hope you can get these too! They've honestly been two of my favorite sets this year.
I'm still waiting to backhoe loader 6662 in modern style
That would be awesome!
Personally I love all the details and I bet it would be insanely fun to crash them with the engine details
I think the Set 7633 is the best set released in 2009
That's a cool one. It gives you a little bit of everything!
Okay, so I'm not the only one who thinks the new figs are bangers...especially the 'overalls' one in 60420...I'll want a few of that body, for sure. 👍
Hey, I might've missed something, but are those two floating island looking modules in the background, a hypixel skyblock moc? If so where can I check them out?
Very very soon all will be revealed!
5:26 I think it's a change it target audience with a focus at adult where nostalgic for it and will more likely display them
Indeed.
Never heard of Tek Blox. I'll have to look into them and see what's up!

@@CheeseyStudios this is so awesome! thanks for the link!
I had one of the construction cranes as a kid, couldn’t tell you exactly which but it came with a building and the amount of hours I spent playing with those, I might have to get the new one just for nostalgia
