I just wanna say, as someone who doesn't play Canadian Highlander, the set review episodes might be my favourite because they give multifaceted insight into the meta / format and it's a new take on interpreting the cards to how I do as an exclusively MTG:Arena player.
The look on Jer's face when he realized that Faeburrow Elder went infinate with Najeela has made my day. Also they talked about robber of the rich in red aggro decks, but clearly it's best home is in rogue tribal
Congrats for keeping the tradition of weird, nondescriptive names alive, canlander. Standard and modern have very regularized names, it's kinda boring.
I keep imagining Ben Wheeler is an alternate reality verision of Joey Wheeler who went on a different life path and played magic instead of yugioh, among other things.
Interesting point about the Royal Scions that I just realized: the second ability is probably supposed to be just Rowan’s- and so the color tie is just to red- and the first ability is just Will’s- with a color tie to blue. The ult is them working together, hence why we get drawing cards and dealing damage, a blue effect and a red one together
I have heard a lot about red /green aggro on this podcast, but would love to see it played out on stream. Excellent episode as always. Happy to engage.
Honestly, I would probably watch a podcast where, starting with alpha, you were to do set reviews for each set. (*faint maniacal laughter in background*)
I think the real sweetness with Robber of the Rich is T1 Goblin Guide into T2 Robber. You can stack the triggers to significantly increase the chances that you exile a spell.
I am learning alot about Serge today. - Hover myr is life - best lands player in highlander - embercleave is colourless. Yep - reading is hard Loving it
Claim the Firstborn still has some functionality outside of stealing your opponent's creatures, it can untap and give your own creatures haste. Big reason it's so good in standard aristocrats
You guys should upload more content of you playing the format- I love hearing about it, but I'd love to see a lot of these thoughts in action! Ps. Big fan of the podcast, it's made my work days bearable this year
Surprised at no mention of Redcap Melee. If as Goblins or RDW i can flame slash a courser or kalitas eot i dont much care that it costs me a land i think. Or even a relevant PW that could be an issue in the long run like Architect of thought with its constant debuffing
They joke about Set Reviews for older sets at the end of the episode but tbh there are sets that I'd love a highlander retrospective on; talking about initial takes on cards, cards they may have missed the first time, or just storys of what are now format staples.
So, I think the reason TRS has 2 plus abilities is that the first +1 is Will on his own, the second +1 is Rowan on her own, and the -8 is the two of them working together. Especially considering that looting is a historically blue effect, +2/+0, first strike, and trample are all historically red effects (although trample is either secondary or tertiary), and then draw 4 is blue and deal 4 is red.
I mean first strike reads as a mostly white mechanic to me. Secondary in red perhaps. Trample reads mostly green but secondarily red, maybe. Of the two keywords it grants, both feel SECONDARY to the color they're meant to evoke (red). If it had been +2/+0 and either keyword on it's own I probably wouldn't have remarked on it but with BOTH it feels a little weird. Btw, my gut tells me first strike is more red than trample but I don't know. Just gut on that one. Could be that I don't feel like first strike is as white as trample is green. Trample is very green.
@@jon9828 magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/mechanical-color-pie-2017-2017-06-05 The article is now two and a half years old, but this is what all of those statements were based on. First strike is primarily in RW, trample is primary G secondary R
This does not make sense when a planeswalker has 2 pluses and is only representing one character though. If it's okay, in the where-flavor-meets-mechanics way, for two pluses to be given to one character, it doesn't need extra reasoning for two to be given to two characters combined. It can just be that way. Else they will always be tied - when they make dual planeswalker cards in the future - to making one ability represent one and another represent the other, and this will only ultimately stifle card design.
Every episode is great, but dear god was this chock full of absolute belly laughs for me. The exchange between Ben and Jer about Embercleave broke me completely for about a minute.
Robber of the rich is a robin hood inspired card. and Robin hood is known for his archery and archers in mtg have usually have reach. Also the enchantment outlaw's merriment generates tokens that are homage to members of the merry men. The 3/1 with trample is based on Little John, the 2/1 with lifelink is Friar Tuck, and the 1/2 with ping is Maid Marian.
Fires of invention- I feel like there might be something if A) you do something with your lands other than using them for mana. Animating them, etc.. B) a mana sink that nets you something, damage/token etc. c) I am thinking aether vial- cards that play/not cast.
Okay, so some quick maths on Outlaws' Merriment vs Assemble the legion. With an unchecked AtL, you get t6 -> 1 dmg, t7 -> 3 dmg, t8 -> 6 dmg etc. With an unchecked OM, the math is a bit trickier, but the reader can verify the average OM token is 2 power and ETBs for 1/3 of a damage. Thus with an unchecked OM, you get t5 -> 2.3 dmg, t6 -> 4.3 dmg, t7 -> 6.3 dmg, t8 -> 8.3 dmg etc. After turn 8, OM gets you just over 21 damage on average, whereas AtL gets you 10 damage, however, that's factoring in your curve. Say you've got an Enduring Ideal and you're ready to win the game. Four turns of AtL gets you 20 damage, four turns of OM gets you (on average) 21 and change. EDIT: I should probably mention that five turns of AtL is where it finally outshines Outlaw's Merriment. Assemble the Legion's total damage grows cubicly, whereas Outlaws' Merriment's total damage grows quadraticly. If your opponent has 100 life and no board, AtL is better. If your opponent has 21 or less life and/or has a board, OM is almost certainly better.
about the mystic santuary. one of my friend is building a pauper deck with 4 of that one and then the miracle burn spell just to buy it back...... thats presents about 40 damage for 8 cards in a blue/red burn deck AT COMMON.. :D
So you are selling Garruk a bit short and my boi doesn't deserve this for his triumphant return. The ability to flood the board with creatures whose death makes it actually easier for more of the same to show up in the future can close a game on its own. I give it an engaging/10.
I know there is a lot of competition for this spot, but I am surprised Lochmare Serpent didn't warrant a mention. 6 cmc 7/7 with three relevant abilities seems not bad.
43:40 I think you guys are underrating Garruk here. You describe a problem of literally any Planeswalker, and Garruk is more resilient than most. He ults the second a wolf dies.
I've found the tier lists you guys have made to be very helpful when building my own decks, but one that keeps coming up is that your playing a bunch of wheels. For me, once you get past twister, echo of aeons, and wheel itself they get quite expensive or clunky, what wheels do you play after that?
I'm terrified of mystic sanctuary, but happy with Dwarven mine as I want to meme on people with polymorphs and the mine turns red fetches into a creature to polymorph.
For the record, +2/+0, First Strike, and Trample are all things Red can grant. White can't grant Trample, and Green doesn't get First Strike, and while Green and White SOMETIMES pump power without toughness, Red does it far more often. I'm also surprised how many people I've seen miss what Robber of the Rich was referencing. While it doesn't have it prominently in the art, it does have a bow on its back. Also, not every Archer has Reach, White doesn't get Reach but they usually represent Archery by giving the creature a way to tap things, damage creatures in combat, or have first strike/double strike.
As someone who generally plays mostly G/X mid-range and green stompy; I feel that Yorvo is missing one vital keyword... Trample. He desperately needs it!
Castle Garenbrig only nets +1 mana... And fixes two generic into green. Paying 4 and tapping is equal to 5 mana to generate 6. This doesn't seem great. You already have access to at least 3 green pips to be able to even use the ability.
I'm shocked y'all didn't talk about Torbran. Maybe I've fundamentally misunderstood something about what kinds of cards red decks want, but the amount of damage he'll consistently add to your turns seems insane.
Having played with Garruk in limited, I can say with confidence that he does, in fact, close the game quickly. The fact that your opponent can't kill any of the wolves without turning on his ultimate is absurd.
Sadly ‘Bonecrusher Giant’ isn’t nuts against ‘True-name Nemesis’ because it is still an invalid target due to the protection. It is fine though as it allows a trade when they block one of your creatures with the true-name.
Rewatching since Throne became the most banned set ever. I sometimes forget about the "bad" cards from this set. Like Questing Beast is arguably not a top 10 card in this set. An on rate with 6 upsides.
