If you look at a crochet pattern, all loops being made have names like single crochet and double crochet (just to name a couple), the result is called a stitch, and the entire crochet project is made up of rows of crochet stitches. It seems to me that him knowing they're called stitches shows he learned about her interests or paid attention when she talked about it enough to compliment and encourage her. And I agree, it is adorable.
My spouse gets just as excited about all of my crochet and knitting projects. The encouragement and the compliments from him help me when I feel like it didn't come out how I wanted or how it was supposed to look.
