I worked in the HVAC industry for 30 Years and since this Rental Scam came into the Industry, I disliked it and voiced out my displeasure with this business practice to the point that the company I worked for 13 years forced me to quit my job by making my life miserable. I contacted The Market Place about this issue but I guess at that point felt thru the cracks. I had audio recordings of our sales meetings where all sales team complained about the immorality of this practice to no avail, if you did not like it, here is the door . You are expected to close 70% in rentals and 30% in sale of equipment. Unfortunately since these companies get away with this and make absurd amounts of money with it, other smaller companies are adopting the same business plan. It is a disgrace that the government does not take more serious measures to protect consumers from these thieves. Sales people can make up to $1000 to $1500 in commission if they close a complete system rental (Furnace, AC, Humidifier, etc) . They only make half of that if they SELL the same equipment instead of RENTING IT. That is the salesman commission, the sales manager chunk is on top of that.

I used to work a call center that provided natural gas to properties in Ontario. I have heard hundreds and hundreds of stories where someone went to the customers home on behalf of the company i was working for. Customer would call in to find out if we sent people door to door. We did not. Door to door people will promise anything to get the sale. And some (if not all ) customers found out that a lien was attached to their property.
My best advice was (and always will be): Don't let people in to look at your equipment unless you called the company yourself first.

I had a similar experience with the Toronto based company Simply Green. Tried to sell me a new water heater, HVAC and some new hepa filtration system, on the premise that all my equipment was old and inefficient, my water heater was apparently leaching rust and other crap into my water. This whole sales pitch was done during a supposed mandatory "service call" for my water heater, which I was renting from Simply Green at the time. I initially signed on the dotted line for the new equipment, but something didn't feel right. The sales guy even took photos of my tax return, which had my SIN on it. (I was gullible, being a first time home owner.) I called a friend who was a realtor, and he said "Do NOT sign for anything". When we looked over the paper work, it would have cost me 40 grand over the ensuing decade, and there was actually nothing wrong with any of my equipment. I filed a complaint with the BBB, but no significant action was taken. Simply Green was very slow to reply, and no real apology, except to say they made sure my personal info was deleted from the phone of the sales rep. Truly appalling.

I have been in the Ontario HVAC industry for about 15 years and I have a very simple solution for how the Homeowner could be notified of the “security registration” or lien. Every potential victim of this garbage company MUST do what’s called a TPV or telephone verification call, if Consumer Protection forced the call to notify said homeowner of the amount and that the lien would be put on it would eliminate this trash company.

The Ontario government is in on it, if no action is taken, they are profiting.

I had good help and resolution from consumer protection back in 2002. Things must have gone pear shaped since then.

Not acceptable especially if they are trying to lower carbon footprint at those hyperinflated prices. Sometimes it is better to keep the old system than to obtain a new one. No you must replace within # of days force sales on to people this is bad, does not matter if it breaks the next day. Manufacturing fossil fuels consumption need to be taken into account vs how much extra fuel the old system will use vs the new.
