That's terrific, I love taking everyday stuff and turning it into props. I've never played with papier-mache, in fact I dind't know it was so easy to make the basic liquid material, I'll be trying that on something soon. Thanks for the inspiration!
We used foam core (from our local craft store) instead of cardboard (~$6). We had a non flexible disk sled so the shape/size is great but it does weigh a little more--very sturdy. For the handles I used Binder Post Screws and Fasteners so there wouldn't be any exposed bolt heads (since it's headed to school).
not sure what you mean here? Brush on the paint? Or use an airbrush? I got some really good looking results on this shield by painting the whole thing gold first then just sprayed a little black for accents. Came out great.
It's not called Lakedaímōn, wtf is that? It is called Λακεδαίμονα or Λακεδαίμονος χώρα but usually Σπάρτη. You destroyed the word there, i assour you for that cause im from Greece and every 5 days at school they teach us anciet greek grammar.
hey buddies, i did a scrapbook course, and we use a mix of pvc glue with water as a sealant. i never tested it exaustly, but for my notebooks, worked very well.
This is a great idea. You see those satellite dishes in the trash everywhere. It would make a very sturdy shield I say and easy to do. And you could watch tv while you battled !lol
@gideonMorrison Thanks, you can just insert a couple of layers of cardboard. Just cut them into big circles and screw them into the inside. No need to paper mache. the inside doesn't really show.
I made a helmet for Halloween a few years ago, key step is coat the outside in fiberglass car body epoxy, fantastic, hardens solid and its perfect as long as you apply it relatively smooth for it to dry. Its made to be painted too so it turns out really nice.
Great DYI vid. This has helped greatly for my first paper mache project. Has been fun working with my 6th grader for a school project. We will be painting it today and will email you the pics once complete.
hmmm. not sure. I add salt to the paper mache to inhibit rot or mold. And I have sealed it with a spray on sealer, which also gives it a nice shine. Should last for quite a while.
Another thing to and for cosmetics is a little bit of shoe polish. Just Smear a bit onto the shield and it gives it a very nice look, almost like burn marks or ash.
@Fayette142 You should give it a try. Just like everything else you get better at it. You should have seen my first few paper mache items. Couldn't even use em for a video.
Your work is great and inspireing. I knew an artist who used epoxy or resin over paper mache statues she made. Iron Man suit guys use cardboard with fiberglass over it. I guess they use bondo too.
When you think about it, there's actually a lot of complex maths that needs to be calculated to make these shields. The Greeks really knew their stuff.
Dude you are so Awesome!!!!!thank you so much for making all of this Videos. you really helped alot of people including me on this kinds of projects.the school rewarded me best in costume during our costume parade.I totally owe you this Victory, may you live long and unforgotten my friend.HAWOO-HAWO-HAWOO!!!!!!
@skatergalol You can make it any size you want! I would hold it up like it was a shield and see if it looks like it would be a good size. if so then go right ahead and use it! Barrel covers work pretty well too.
This shield probably wouldn't last long in mock battles. If I were you I would just do cardboard shields. Make them out of several layers of cardboard so they are nice and strong. in the case of this the paper mache will not hold up under repeated attacks!
If you were to put on a thin plaster layer and sand, your overall finish would be 100x better. But good effort, and it was a good idea having the plastic sled as your base for the mache.
you could make a very sturdy sheild from a satalite dish by taking every thing of but the dish unscrew the bolts that hold the dish to the pole cut some holes in nilon straps put the bolts threw the holes put the bolts back in and use nuts to hold the bolts then costomize it with spraypaint or something
@Asakaro: Well, it is said that some Spartan shields covered almost the whole body, from neck to ankle, and these would be wielded by a 5'10 6 feet men if not a bit shorter
4:155:506:20. That shape is no ornament. This is the greek letter "Lamda" : "Λ" (Λάμβδα). From that stemmed letters from other alphabets, such as Latin (L), Cyrillic (Л) or Phoenician. That letter is the initial from the word "Lacedaemon" which is the ancient greek word for the wider Spartan region. Therefore, soldiers of Sparta were also be heard by the name of Lacedaemons. Lacedaemon was also a greek mythological figure.
sic shield and other spartan gear! but im doing an isu on ancient spartan's and i was wondering if you were still doing the breast plate spartan swords? and if so when will they be up ? just curious but would love to hear back soon :P thanx a bunch!
@epicfantasy Great tutorial! However, I have a question regarding a '300 shield' I bought. It's really thin plastic and would like to cover only the back area, to make it stronger and heavier (the front already looks nice). Is it possible to only cover the back of the shield with a couple of layers and make it (permanently) stick? Perhaps use some tape around the edges? Thanks!
If you're looking for a clean and shiny finish, just spray paint it gold or bronze. But for a distressed and battle worn look, try painting a base coat of black and painting on a layer of bronze or gold.
im late as hell but spray paint it with a black base coat, a bronze coat over it, do a semigloss clear coat so it isnt obnoxiously shiny, and then use black acrylic paint for wear and tear.
Love the video, gonna make the entire hoplite gear. sorry to tell you cuz to me it sounds like im trollin but the ornament is an L rather than a V, it comes from the region from which the spartans came ( Laconia). Yet again love the video :D
So I have a giant paper mâché ball to make a squirtle head and I was wondering what kind of paint do I use to paint it with and what kind of wax like coating to make it look shiny
2020 I’m a college student looking back I used this video for a project in middle school😂🙏🏽
That's terrific, I love taking everyday stuff and turning it into props.
I've never played with papier-mache, in fact I dind't know it was so easy to make the basic liquid material, I'll be trying that on something soon.

This is the most intuitive guy I've ever seen. He's like the McGuiver of nerds.
It's not an upside down V; it's a lambda for Lakedaímōn - home of the Spartans. But the shield is awesome
Im glad somebody knows this.
Jesse Morrow phew.... finally, another educated person
Also this shield in comparison to a real spartan shield is garbage
@@ΠαςμηΈλληνβάρβαρος It basically is garbage. It is not meant to be real.
wow , really amazing job dude .
can't believe that something so cool can come out of paper mache !!
Really a nice job! Thanks for the inspiration and directions. I think I will try it myself
Bought it on clearance at a hardware store. It is a flexible flyer snow sled. Pretty much just a big plastic saucer.
@DakotaAKAZero You are so right. The plaster bandages work very well. Much easier too. Just a bit more expensive.
The best tutorial EVER for hoplite shield
hey buddies, i did a scrapbook course, and we use a mix of pvc glue with water as a sealant. i never tested it exaustly, but for my notebooks, worked very well.
@vamp642 It's a snow sled. I bought it at a hardware store but it is very seasonal. You can buy them on amazon.
@300spartanswin I think I see. As you tighten down the bolts it will pull down the cirlce into the parabolic shape.
This is a great idea. You see those satellite dishes in the trash everywhere. It would make a very sturdy shield I say and easy to do. And you could watch tv while you battled !lol
Thanks, For my 300 diorama I did the shields with a nice red and black pattern that looks great.
I will be doing the breastplaste and the sword but it will probably be a couple of weeks. I have a lot of other projects coming.
great question. Maybe, dunno. But that is a great way to think and be creative. Improvising.
@gideonMorrison Thanks, you can just insert a couple of layers of cardboard. Just cut them into big circles and screw them into the inside. No need to paper mache. the inside doesn't really show.
Nice! and the idea of using a door handle is great. Thanks.
I made a helmet for Halloween a few years ago, key step is coat the outside in fiberglass car body epoxy, fantastic, hardens solid and its perfect as long as you apply it relatively smooth for it to dry. Its made to be painted too so it turns out really nice.
you are great at tutorials i have watched many of your tutorials to see how to make things
Great DYI vid. This has helped greatly for my first paper mache project. Has been fun working with my 6th grader for a school project. We will be painting it today and will email you the pics once complete.
kind of a cool idea. I am currently working on a steel helmet.
hmmm. not sure. I add salt to the paper mache to inhibit rot or mold. And I have sealed it with a spray on sealer, which also gives it a nice shine. Should last for quite a while.
This is Madness!!! NO THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
Came out good for a simple and easy build. Thanks.
@300spartanswin it protects it from peeling . prevents the color from smearing.
Another thing to and for cosmetics is a little bit of shoe polish. Just Smear a bit onto the shield and it gives it a very nice look, almost like burn marks or ash.
@MrSpartanPhalanx YEs, that all sounds pretty good. It would work. Just be careful about what you use for the tip of the spear, could be dangerous.
I have to either make a chest plate or do a whole lot of sit ups! :)
thank you so much this helped me because I have a project for sixth grade on the Greek Hoplites Thanks!!
This helped me immensely making my kids' Halloween costumes. Thanks!
Very nice. Thanks for taking the time to make the tutorial.
@300spartanswin YOu can use any type of artist sealer. I think I used a spray on sealer.
@Fayette142 You should give it a try. Just like everything else you get better at it. You should have seen my first few paper mache items. Couldn't even use em for a video.
very practical. Nice work and thanks for the tip :)
This is a good idea though. I have plenty of wall paper paste and it is cheap so I should give it a try on a project to see how it comes out.
Yes
Dude you are so Awesome!!!!!thank you so much for making all of this Videos.
you really helped alot of people including me on this kinds of projects.the school
rewarded me best in costume during our costume parade.I totally owe you this
Victory, may you live long and unforgotten my friend.HAWOO-HAWO-HAWOO!!!!!!
@skatergalol You can make it any size you want! I would hold it up like it was a shield and see if it looks like it would be a good size. if so then go right ahead and use it! Barrel covers work pretty well too.
@ColdShadowProduction That would be seriously cool!
@GayfishFTW You are very welcome and Grats on the A!
@TheUnforgiver10 I bought mine at a hardware store. Maybe you can try walmart or online? Instead of a flexible flyer try a plastic barrel cover.
@iNestor93 YOu are very welcome. Good luck with the play!
Thanks. It came out great. I am pretty happy with it :)
This video is awesome. This would be awesome to make for my L.A.R.P. club. Plus the shield is very realistic
This shield probably wouldn't last long in mock battles. If I were you I would just do cardboard shields. Make them out of several layers of cardboard so they are nice and strong. in the case of this the paper mache will not hold up under repeated attacks!
I haven't done it but I had a subscriber use a broom. He cut the handle off and died the bristles red. The kind of broom that is straight and narrow.
The recipe is pretty flexible. You can always tinker with it by adding a little more flour or water. Keep trying!
@splashie777 Cost me about 20 dollars I think? Sled was 10, two cans of spray paint, and flour.
wooohooo. u finallly did it .. i love it , it looks awesome!!!
Thanks so much!!! I have been trying to find this for school :)
If you were to put on a thin plaster layer and sand, your overall finish would be 100x better. But good effort, and it was a good idea having the plastic sled as your base for the mache.
Definitely sword next!
@feaz5800 I am not sure about using this for live roleplay. I am going to be making some foam weapons and swords that could be good though.
@zxracer04 Its a snow sled. And wow, parabola? You a telescope maker?
Nice! Thanks for this idea... Very helpful for me for my cosplay for Ares (God of War)
@TheDuDe536 lol! no smiting allowed. - I love that word "smite". I have plans for making a sword called "Smite".
Need this for school project !!
@k9774 Yes, definitely.
@16linbra A Hardware store! Try any toy store. or online, amazon carries them
It is not a "V", it's an "L" (Lambda), from Lakedaimon (Sparta's name at the time). By the way, awsome work!
you could make a very sturdy sheild from a satalite dish by taking every thing of but the dish unscrew the bolts that hold the dish to the pole cut some holes in nilon straps put the bolts threw the holes put the bolts back in and use nuts to hold the bolts then costomize it with spraypaint or something
this guy sounds like peter from family guy
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Aidan Ward I think u mean brian
@TheShadowFreak3010 yes, definitelyl
The 'opposite v' is the Hellenic lamda
Could you make a video on how to make one out of steel? I like making stuff out of metal like in your other videos
Thats amazing!!!! Ty for sharing ur work.
@Asakaro: Well, it is said that some Spartan shields covered almost the whole body, from neck to ankle, and these would be wielded by a 5'10 6 feet men if not a bit shorter
4:15 5:50 6:20.

How strong would this be if you did the paper meche added a layer of clay like stuff and a sheet of metal?
Cool shield! But is it tough and durable?
@maroulios Actually it means Lacadaemonia, which is the region in Southern tip of Greece where Sparta was.
THIS IS AWEOSOME!! THANK YOUU
im so nerding out this next paycheck lol
hmm, I can't remember. Some kind of epoxy or glue. But, sealing it all over with paper mache will be good and lock it down.
How do you make the paper mache?
sic shield and other spartan gear! but im doing an isu on ancient spartan's and i was wondering if you were still doing the breast plate spartan swords? and if so when will they be up ? just curious but would love to hear back soon :P thanx a bunch!

Is there a chance you could simply mix black and gold and spray it on?
Would you recommend me use spray paint or normal paint?
If you're looking for a clean and shiny finish, just spray paint it gold or bronze. But for a distressed and battle worn look, try painting a base coat of black and painting on a layer of bronze or gold.
im late as hell but spray paint it with a black base coat, a bronze coat over it, do a semigloss clear coat so it isnt obnoxiously shiny, and then use black acrylic paint for wear and tear.

Looks extremely nice. One question though. How sturdy is this with enough paper maché? Could this conceivably be sturdy enough for larp?
@AzukiakaMe Yes, sure is..
you'd make great dad
wish my dad is as creative as you :D
How strong would this be and how can you make it stronger staying cheap
THX that helps me, because i wanna make a Pantheon Champion cosplay.
@RudeWARRIOR83 Only if the persians have paper mache weapons too!
So I have a giant paper mâché ball to make a squirtle head and I was wondering what kind of paint do I use to paint it with and what kind of wax like coating to make it look shiny
can you show us how to make one with the black dome? how do i even out the surface?
@12343astronomer This is a terrific idea. I would say that it wouldn't be easy! Need woodworking and metal working skills!
Can you do a spartan sword
I have it here. Great project. Very popular: ruclips.net/video/J_NrPpv38YA/видео.html
@300spartanswin sorry, i dont really understand your question.
@greek1237 The shield with Medusa's face on it was the shield Perseus used
could coat it with foam so its usable for larp that would be cool :)
Does the ever rot? After a period of time you'd think it would eventually rot?
maybe
wow, must look great. Can you send a pic?
