    I've heard people speaking of the pleasure trap-----finally now understand it. Ego Trap??? wow--I totally get that now too. Excellent information. Thank you so much Chef AJ & Dr Lisle for truly helping us avoid big trouble. by understanding the ego trap.

    Thank you for the gift of this upload!
    Respectfully as a former Starch Solution follower, turned low fat raw plant based, I have found the difference to my health, weight and vitality on raw food to be incomparable to when on cooked.
    Cooked WFPB works for the vast majority, but please dont dismiss raw as for some of us it is a lifeline.
    WFPB carried me a certain way on health recovery, but to really improve I needed to go raw.
    I eat lowfat and the diet is based on fruit, leafy greens, less sweet fruit (ie salad veg) and other veg. Limited/minimal nuts seeds and certainly no SOFAS. I consider myself to belong to the plant based community, albeit within a niche.

    Thank you for sharing information so candidly with us. After listening to you both for a long time, I feel as if I know you. I find you are good company and am never lonely being alone.     Thank you, Chef AJ, for bringing me this insightful interview with Dr. Doug Lisle. I am on my third listening and will need to listen more. He was helping me view my life story and explaining things that have taken more than 40 years for me to understand. More, more about the internal audience and the real life audience, please. My internal audience includes Elenor Roosevelt, Dr. T. K. (one of my profs in the '70s and 80s), Dr. Carl Sagan, and a few more. I'm not weird! They guide me and speak to me (sorta). So, thank you.

    LOL im a bioengineering student and my studies are also a way for me to channel my HCNC tendencies, but whenever i post about this lifestyle on my social media people my age are totally interested! especially whenever I post about the pleasure trap. Dr lisle and chef AJ are so cool!! The discussions on protecting self esteem are so fascinating to me. I read the pleasure trap when I was 16 and it is something I ponder all the time, to this day. I would love to know what Dr lisle thinks about the new “intuitive eating” of all foods including rich foods. In my opinion it is counter productive to the pursuit of long term health.

      Intuitive eating would prob work fine in a natural environment. But our intuition is commonly hijacked by super normal stimuli of fast food, etc.

    Absolutely fascinating. Dr Lisle is so brilliant and interesting. I am learning so much. I understood the pleasure principle but did not know about the ego trap. I have repeatedly been sabotaged by that. Despite the odds...having this knowledge and working on this is going to get me over the one yard line. Must get the book. Thank you so much.
    Seeking excellence and non-catastrophizing are going to be extremely helpful to me moving forward.

    Dr lisle can be talking about the same subject and I learn something new every time! I learned last year my perfectionist mind had me self sabotaging when I didn’t meet my expectations. Once I decided to be ok with not being perfect every time I swear my stress level went in half. People also asked me what I’ve been doing because I looked great. Stressing about everything little thing is not healthy either.

    As a psych major, I really enjoyed Dr. Lisle's explanation of how we're wired to eat the most calorie dense food available. It makes so much sense. I have to literally go against my instincts.
    I just discovered your kind of group (McDougal, AJ, etc). I'm hoping the Starch Solution will be the real deal this time. I thought the body builder diet was the right one. It made sense. Eat meat for protein and eat a not crap diet and work out a lot. I did that for a few months but it took so long to lose any weight and I honestly didn't feel that much better. I was proud of the progress I made on the treadmill but that's about it. It was a LOT of hassle to track macros and trying to make sure I eat enough protein was ridiculous. I love pasta and corn and potatoes and was always told those things were bad for me. It's so hard to get over that. I brought up my new diet to my friends and both of them vehemently rejected my idea, which was expected. I was hoping one of them might try it with me but she refused so I'll be doing it alone.

    It's a scale. It's not you're always 100% perfect or you fail. Strive for the best you can and if you end up eating a burger or a steak once, then fine. Get back to your plan with the next meal. It's fine. But you can't be having that kind of meal all the time and that's where your social life makes a difference. Friends, family, and co-workers will likely hold you back or at worst, sabotage you. I know my friends and family are well-meaning but my co-workers would try to sabotage me at every turn.

      while that is true for most health outcomes, it is generally not true for most overweight women to achieve a very slender body that they say they desire.

    Dear AJ, you talked about wanting to do plastic surgery (and Dr. Lisle rightfully warned against it) and I feel the need to talk about this with you or anyone else who's considering it.
    The thing is, plastic surgery is a very poor deal. It doesn't do much good, and doesn't actually make people look younger (or feel better).
    If you want real greatness (like I would expect from you because you have a great taste for quality by choosing dr. Lisle :)) there are actually great workable solutions to restore the body's tensegrity (look up this term).
    Looking, feeling and appearing young is all about the right balance in your body.
    Your main focus would be to rebuild the correct posture (and straighten the back), firstly. This is step one for youthful looks (and feels) at all times.
    Posture is number one.
    Different approaches can be used for this, all focused on the myofascial and connective tissue release. Rolfing, osteopathy and critical alignment yoga are the approaches you might want to consider. A lot you can do yourself at home.
    After rebuilding the posture, you can start working on the face. Be ware of "face building" approach as this makes things only worse. What you need is, again, osteopathic approach of releasing tensions.
    I have been working with the special techniques on myself for a couple of months now and I love what it does.
    I thought I would share this with you because I really don't want you to go down the road of plastic surgery and I wanted to let you know there are ways to restore the beauty the natural way! If you need more information, feel free to contact me, I can share with you what I know.
    And if this word of advice is unwanted, by any means, feel free to ignore! Just wanted to share this awesomeness I enjoy so much for myself.

    ego thing can be stimulating too - you declare yourself something you are not and get frustrated by public expectation and start doing stuff in order not to expose yourself and fell ashamed :) Fake it until you make it I guess it is called

    Dr. Lisle says that men provision women, but considering that, in most hunter gather communities, women are provisioning the majority of dietary calories, is not that statement inaccurate? Thanks

      That's a good point, but I think he would probably say that the men put their lives on the line to provide (hunting).

      he may be referring to agrarian and or herding societies which started about 10 thousand years ago, when humans started accumulating wealth. He could also be talking about males protecting women and children from predators.

      By provisioning, he means taking care of a wife and kids. This is common in pair bond species such as humans. Only 3% of all species are pair bond, and these species necessarily help provision their mate and offspring. Just listen to his podcast, beat your genes if u need further clarification, as I am no expert!

      Michael L. Winick Thanks. I do listen to his podcast. I understand that men in hunter-gathering communities undoubtedly provide protection, build structures, make tools, hunt, barter etc.. But if mens spoils are distributed amongst the tribe, beyond protection, educating his young, how are men provisioning for his wife and children? Certainly, amongst the inuit, where there diet is animal based, Men definitely are provisioning their family, but amongst equatorial tribes, where the major calorie source is tubers, gathered by women, there provisioning role would seem less significant. I've just ordered a book to get more clarification on hunter-gathering communities.

    I wondered why Dr. Lisle was single myself! I love his talks, but its sort of easy to see how his language could come across as a bit sexist to someone who isn't familiar with evolutionary psychology. I wonder if he takes care to choose his words wisely when he's on a date!

    Those nut cases can be really awful to people too. Why does the whole food plant based community have to be so mean to people? At least that is what I have found.

    Hey AJ, here is a question for Lisle. What happens if you are doing the best job you can, and it's an A job, not A+, and you are low weight, in fact if you manage A+ for long enough you even get under weight, despite eating ad libitum whole plant foods - but you still have a problem with bloating, any small deviation from A+ makes it worse, but the problem is still huge (no pun intended) even when doing A+.
    When you do A+, people are telling you that you're underweight, that's unhealthy, that you're too extreme, you're orthorexic, they tell you these pleasure trap foods are actually healthy - so you give up on A+ for a while and go back to A, and as usual the bloating gets worse... and it takes a long time doing A+ to get it back down...
    But even when you do, the same claims will make you doubt whether you should do A+ even though your personal experience says this is what it takes and even that is not enough... and the fact it's not enough will also contribute to you slipping back to A, because you're still bloated at A+, it's just doing A+ is the only thing you found that helps.
    And people tell you, you must be making this stuff up even though you measured it many times.
    So how do you deal with this situation?
    Personally, I am just trying to do the best I can, not beat myself up when I go off plan, and open to trying new things people suggest but drawing the line at anything that isn't vegan sos free... but it's really frustrating because I don't know who or what to believe since I am not getting the results even when I do really really well and that is highly demotivating for me to keep up A+ long term but doing any less doesn't feel good either because the difference between A- or even A and A+ is huge, at least as far as looks and confidence goes if not also my physical health.
    So far the solutions proposed to me to deal with my bloating have been ineffective. The only thing that seems to help is to do an A+ job constantly, but it is really hard to do. It's not just the pleasure trap. It's not just the ego trap. It's that even when I am doing an A+ job for a long period of time, I get no external esteem for it, only criticism, and while I do manage to solve half the issue (pre-meal bloat) I still have post-meal bloat and also solving pre-meal bloat gets me underweight so I wonder if I am wrong to let that happen - so I don't even get to sit back and enjoy self esteem from that.
    So maybe you can add the bloating trap. :P
