I still have the original album of Himesh Reshammiya’s Aap Kea Surroor with me which bought by my sister’s Best Friend from India. Himesh became one of my favorite Singer when he start his career as a playback singer in aashiq banaya aapne movie song. Later on I found out that he have worked as a music composer for so many movies before becoming a singer and most of the songs are very popular know even.

In Indian movies the albums are by the Music Composers (Music Director) such as AR Rahman or Amit Trivedi etc. and they assign the songs to different Singers. So the Album essentially belongs to the Music Director and the singers are just singing based on the tune provided by the Music Director. Also the songs are lip synched by the actors on screen. That’s why a lot of the older india. Singers seem so versatile they would sing a song in the mannerisms of the actor who was going to act it out on the screen.

Himesh was a RAGE back in my younger days. I used to sing his songs and try to imitate his vocal tone and quality. Such was the craze that every age group loved his songs and hummed to it from the upper echelon to the daily wagers. Got huge respect for him and would love to rejoice such musical ingenuity once again. FUN FACT: He was a Music composer much before his fame as a singer(much alike B PRAAK). A collab between these 2 geniuses would be LEGENDARY.

It was quite common for Indian Playback Singers to have their personal albums too. Infact many singers got there break to sing for big movies after their albums were hit.
SONU NIGAM's album 'Deewana' and 'Jaan' were absolute gems.
Shaan, Alisha Chinoy, KK, Daler Mehdi and Lucky Ali and many more phenomenal singers had their individual albums which were massive hits. You should check them out for sure. Start with Sonu

i remember buying himesh reshamiya album apka suroor. it was in local CD shop of 20 indian rupees that would be like 0.24 US dollors . i was in middle school that time and to be honest its not hard to have million sales in india that time actually our country has huge population and people love indian singers . the price of albums are affordable by middle calss people so its easy to grab them. these days CD's are not in trend so people listen songs online but 7 years ago we still buyed CDs of our fav movie album or singers. We don't use that CD now but i have that apka suroor album till this day with me. To be honest i didn't even knew who he was at that time , i just wanted to listen some new songs so shop owner told me his songs were famous that time , so i have some pocket money from parents and i buyed it . Songs were great and whole country used to listen it those time.

So yes "albums" as such are usually not common. Most are movie albums with multiple artists singing the songs. Earlier the only common individuals throughout the album would be the music director and the lyricist who wrote/composed the songs. This would make the albums sonically and thematically cohesive while still very much depicting the story of the movie through music. Modern day Bollywood has however seen the unfortunate trend of movie albums sounding more like compilations with songs by multiple music directors and lyricists rather than one body of work due to the remake fever that seems to have taken over excluding some music directors like A R Rahman & Amit Trivedi who actually agree to make music for a movie only if they are guaranteed that they will be the sole ones doing music for the film.

  • @aman_bawane

6:16 Whenever I asked my grandma, how the singers earned back in the day, she always told me that their pay depends on how many copies of album ( which they are a part of ) are sold. She also said they were paid after their songs became hit. She maybe wrong. Bollywood is very secretive about how it works. Nobody knows except the singers or music directors.

Also yes sometimes in some movies a particular singer provides vocals for a particular actor for majority of the movie bcoz the voice suits the actor.
Like Udit Narayans voice suits SRK really well & he has sung many songs for him as a playback singer.
And we also have those tribute things on side of roads for people who might have died, but most of the times they are actually mini shrines for Gods & Deities.

Himesh's Voice is a running joke, his style of singing is very very nasal voice with great, catchy music, this makes him one of the most iconic bollywood singers, everyone respects him and when you get bored you go back to Himesh's 2000s hits, back in the day every ricksha or tuktuk blasted Himesh's songs and at that time, Emraan's movies became hits due to Himesh's playback singing. He's a legend, really unique artist❤️

answering your questions- (edit-do a request a podcast on atleast 90s, 50-70s, and react to ScoopWhoop: 60 Years Of Bollywood In 4 Chords..they did amazing compilation, in description named all 35 songs they included)
1 yes all these are movie albums except Daler Mehndi's (ig its correct if it wasnt for a punjabi movie) where producers could either hier just one composer to make song [like Brahmastra-Pritam] OR many composers give songs for a sing movie album like [aashiqui 2- by mithoon, jeet ganguly]....and you know that not all songs of a movie album arent sung by a single singer in indian cinema...movie albums are under the label not the singers/composers
2 hritik's name is pronounced as ritik..H is silent
3 not necessary that a particular singer is voice of main leads [eg aashiqui 2, ML had kk,arijit, ankit as voice, FL had shreya, palak to sing songs]..but the voice has to be matachable like u cant have arjit, himesh sing for a single person it would sound so odd..lol🤣🤣..but we have rockstar where mohit sang all for ranbir
4 My guess why himesh sold that many is mainly because he was different from all sweet, melodious, perfect notes singers like lata, sonu which we had for decades without break..he was like later version of kishore kumar without melodious notes..which ig amazed people that time
Ps-my favs from these is definitely aashiqui(this was so popular among lovers in those days), Hum apke hai kon(still all its songs are played in weedings/baraat atleast in tier 2,3 cities) and madhuri+salman/kajol+srk ruled the 90s

Later from 2012-15 Himesh Reshammiya only started composing songs and not sing then anymore... And then later he became a regular in judging singing reality shows in India like Saregamapa just like Adam Levine, Blake Shelton are a regular in Voice.

    Regarding your question:
Generally, singers for a movie album are chosen based on how their voice would suit the song, not the character.
However, some directors might want to repeat the same singer for the character in order to maintain consistency, like you saw with Lata ji in Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. The more recent example would be Mohit Chauhan for Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar.
And another factor is when actors prefer a singer as he/she would suit their voice. This would go beyond a single film or director. Examples include Raj Kapoor-Mukesh, Rajesh Khanna-Kishore Kumar and Emraan Hashmi-Himesh Reshamiya.

The music composer is king in India's Bollywood and other regional film industries. He gets a budget from which he pays various singers, musicians, etc., for their work . Usually, the amount is a little for singers, but given that the movie songs are the biggest hits, the singers are recognized for these songs and are in demand for live shows for the same reason. That's where they make their money. Occasionally, they release singles which may become popular, and there they have royalties.

The movie Aashiqui in 1990 was a hit mainly because of its music. There were two rank newcomers, which ordinarily would mean very low footfall in theatres, but the songs were so popular that people flocked to theatres back then. Anyone who was in love or had their heart broken would be listening to the songs.
Kumar Sanu became very popular because of the songs of Aashiqui.
Aashiqui 2, while good in terms of music, was nowhere, not even a fraction of the popularity of the music in Aashiqui.

India has always had the film music albums, featuring what you can consider the film OST, songs, as well as sometimes dialogs form the film.
Along with that, there have always been what we call Private albums, which are what in the west are called albums. They are usually around similar themes or similar style of music, and can features single or multiple artists. But we didn't have the 'featuring' concept.

I don't know much, but I think in 90s there used to be "album" culture and I saw few albums of Sonu Nigam. My fav would be Diwana

most of the bestselling albums are from 90's-00's because of physical album sales like casettes and cds. just like in the west the "streaming era" has largely affected physical sales leading to the decline of album sales as a whole bc barely anyone buys physical albums or even digital albums these days bc everything is readily available on streaming platforms.

    2. Certain playback singer's voices suit certain actors and they get selected
Sometimes the mood of the song will be the reason for the singer being selected, and sometimes it's the rapport between the music composer and singer that cements the choice.
Film makers like S L Bhansali, Karan Johar have a big say in the music for their film

Albums by Singers do exist or at least they existed till the decade of 2000. Now it's more the era of releasing song on RUclips as a Single. Sonu Nigam has had multiple "Non-film Album Hits" from late 1990s to 2000s decade. His Albums "Deewana" and "Yaad" need to be especially checked out. In fact 90s and 2000s was the Golden Era for Non Film music quality and singers. Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet, Adnan Sami and countless others have had their own multiple hit non Film albums then.

I remember the time when Himesh was all over ...and that's because his nasal singing style was new to the mass. He is not respected as a "singer" but has contributed his compositions to many well known songs, so yeah he is a very good composer tbh.
