Sony 200-600mm vs Fuji 100-400mm (Pros & Cons to Full Frame)

  • Full frame vs APS-C battle. Fuji is unique amongst the crop sensors in that they can hold their own against full frame. This is likely why they skipped full frame and went medium format. Fuji XT4 with the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 vs the Sony A7S III with 200-600mm f5.6-6.3. Let's do a wildlife photography battle, 4k 120p vs HD 120p. Who has better slow mo footage for video, better stabilization? Is the size weight and cost noticeable?

I have found that the 4k120 on the a7siii is amazing. The fact that it has sound is a great bonus. Sony needs to do a major firmware update to the a7siii to bring the a7iv features to it and it's very lame at this point that they haven't.A sony firmware cripple axe graphic is needed.

That was one thing that struck me about the Nikon 800mm, though it lacks an arca swiss mount, it is the most comfortable long lens handle I have experience, being curved to fit your hand very nicely. I replaced the stubby block of metal Nikon provided on my 200-400 very quickly with a wimberly handle. Better, but slippery with the wrong gloves and still not as comfortable as the 800mm, which doesn't even need the comfort since it is apparently filled with helium.

I really enjoyed your interview!...BUT you've made in my opinion one crucial error: You should have used the A1 (or possibly the A7 IV), as the excellent A7SIII color are slightly different than those two models; I would love to see you do a video showing this lens and the video differences/color differences between those three Sony models

Great video as ever. That clip with the tern with fish in its beak was brutal but amazing. But honestly speaking...I watched this both on my laptop and my 65inch TV in the hope there was something else for me to "need" and I am really not buying into this massive full-frame difference. Yeah - it was subtle in some shots I guess, but really not worth it on two fronts 1) cost and 2) portability. I have the X-T4 with the 70-300mm and this video does not convince me to change either. It is not that I can't afford it, it just seems to be chasing something that really is not game changing, and due to the size of the setups, for me would become anti-photography/videography devices :)

Wow those red fishes conversation cracked me up! Very well done! And that was a nice catch indeed! Referring to Mark Smith with this combo to get a better video stability you better to put the tripod foot on the palm of your hand and you can easily change the focus or the zoom with the tip of a finger if needed. For carrying it around also don't turn the foot upwards. Just keep it in your left hand and while the camera is upside down in the front you only need to bring it up and boom you are ready to shoot!

I am honestly considering selling my Nikon z6 and lenses and just fully embracing Fuji. I have the x-t4 and 100-400, and it is just enjoyable to use. Out of camera my results are always better than the z6, and apart from noise at high iso I don’t really notice any differences in IQ.
I just can’t shake the attitude that FF is better. I know that it is superior but the margin is not that great. That is the one thing that stops me doing it. Will I live to regret it? That is what I can’t work out, and what remains to be seen.

To get the most out of the sony I guess it has to be at least the a7 iii and then it goes expensive. I can get a new XT-3 for ~1000 USD in Sweden and for that I only get the a7 ii with pale AF. I've had the 200-600 Sony for a while and I love the results. You are so right on all the issues- it's heavy and clearly not balanced. I will say, having a battery grip, it handles much better. Sometimes I'll snap it onto a tripod just to give my arm a break. It is, however, worth every penny. It's a fantastic wildlife and sport lens, and arguably the best one available for the length.

  • @JohnDrummondPhoto
    @JohnDrummondPhoto 2 года назад +7

You complained about the blackbird looking "pure black" on the Fuji but not so on the Sony. The difference is from the Sony's much better dynamic range, which enables capture of the plumage's iridescence and details.
Sony kicked Fuji up and down the street in terms of image quality. But the reverse is true in usability. The A7S III grip is too pinchy against the lens. Sony didn't improve that until they released the A7R IV. The lens weighs a ton but 600mm FF is hard to beat.
The bird at 8:10 is a Double-crested Cormorant in non-breeding plumage. Pelagic Cormorants live only on the Pacific coast and have more delicate heads and beaks.
Nobody hand-carries a camera with telephoto zoom lens by the tripod mount. Those sharp edges allow mounting the camera on an Arca Swiss-compatible tripod head without an adapter. Get thee a Peak Design or Black Rapid shoulder strap, not that $19 POS you tried before.

Personally, I prefer Fuji, but I agree with everything you said about the Sony 200-600 and agree its a great lens. One thing I don't like about dealing with my own G.A.S. issues is that there really isn't a "bad" camera system, just different. I think the best recommendation you gave was "if you are happy with your gear, don't compare it to other gear." I agree with you. I've talked myself into and out of many camera systems. I have the Fujifilm X-S10 which has the same AF system as the X-T4 I think but I discovered that you can use C-AF subject tracking for stills but not for video! You can only select 'Area' which is a small box or 'Multi' where the camera automatically selects the area to focus on which is not ideal! I hope the upcoming X-H2s will have better AF system with bird detection :-)

Hand holding it for a couple hours does make my left wrist ache thou, Might have to go to a monopod.
Will be interesting to see the results you get with the 1x (and 2x) TCs on the A7s3. I think of any of the bodies, it's the most likely to work well with the 200-600 + 2x if you can get one. With the A1 I just prefer to use APSC mode.

On the animal eye detect thing, is it possible that it's failing sometimes with birds that have a black face and tiny dark eyes that you can't really see? On some of those, it doesn't look like there was much to detect. Edit: or do they just not have it, I dunno, I confuse easy.

    audio from the birds etc…

@Camera Conspiracies Hey please respond, is it worth to buy XT-4 or should I wait and save more for A7S3? Purpose 70% video, outdoors, landscape, travel, a little bit wildlife, a little bit capturing video of friends and myself. It'd be crazy to get an XT4 just to get a free Weebill. You can see his video here. The image is soft and underwhelming. Wait for the XH-2 at least, then you'll get upgraded technology. Look at how good the images from the OM-1 look and that's a micro 4 loser. Imagine what Fuji can do with APSC. Also, the stabilization on the XH-2 will be better, the sharpness will be better. The XT4 is aging rapidly. Future proof your purchase

The Sony lens feet are... bad. Your can get various better ones from third party companies to replace them. It's an extra cost but they're comfier and they work better.
I have no idea why Sony keeps on making those bad feet for their long lenses. They don't even have a product to sell you to fix the issues. Usually a company will bundle a crap version and then dangle a better add on purchase in front of you. Sony just bundles the lacking feet and then goes off for lunch and forgets about it.

I watch your videos, they are always great 👍🏻 besides that, they are funny (so also are you)
    My predicament:
As a Fuji user, having the X T4 with the 70-300 mm lens for birds, and wanting to probably invest in the 150-600mm fuji lens because of the reach. And again probably later, the X H2s, because of birds 🐦
I am also looking at Sony....
The Sony 200-600 mm at 600 stops at 6.8 while the fuji at 600 stops at f8
    So, Sony: more light, brighter
The Sony A74 cost almost the same at the X H2s, but Sony is full frame
So again, Sony: more light, brighter
Also again, because of the f stops and the full frame, Sony would create better background blur
    My brain says Sony
    My heart says Fuji
    Please help me out:
    X H2s + 150-600mm or
    A74 + 200-600mm
(PS. I known crop sensor will give more reach)
Just asking about IQ bokeh and brightness
    Please explain in English
I don't understand science and math
