- Introducing your dog or puppy to a new born baby is probably a big concern to you. It should be. Way too many people make many common mistakes and that puts both the dog and baby at risk. Dogs play very differently than humans and their style of play can be VERY dangerous to babies and small children. Your dog plays, engages and communicates with his or her teeth and that can be very dangerous to young children.

I've talked about this for years, but only recently had to opportunity to make this video since my friends Yossi and Vera just had a beautiful baby boy. In this short video I give you 9 tips to safely introducing your dog / puppy to your new baby. I seriously hope that everyone with a child will watch this, share it and learn from it. I've heard and seen too many bad stories in which children were hurt or disfigured and inevitably the dog will pay the ultimate price. It doesn't have to be like this. Dogs can live with children, toddlers and babies very well. They rely on the structure from you, the humans, to make that happen. In this short video I'll give you a lot of information to help you how to keep your dog and children safe.

@@adamrickman2461 no I doubt it. This looks like a classic showline Malinois to me. I think the reason why people think he's so good-looking is because he's got a very nice black mask. It's the same with working line German Shepherd. The darker the mask the more handsome the dog usually looks, unless they have unusually round or even bugged eyes. Just go look at pictures of dogs with a nice full black mass versus dogs that don't and you'll see what I mean. Many pictures of Malinois people see nowadays are from working lines also. I mean, they are all the Belgian Sheepdogs but this dog looks like a purebred showline Malinois to me with the proper black mask instead of Simply black on the muzzle and just above the eyes. Terverun are related but the coloring and coat is a Malinois & typical head like this dog but with a nice full mask. I'm confused why people are so stunned by this dog. Because he has a nice full mask? And the Belgian sheepdog and GSD mix is always very nice. Personally I like the head of a working line GSD the most, but Above All Else health and temperament
I don't find Malinois particularly attractive, the nose/mouth seems to long and out of proportion. Just a personal opinion.

Online forum years ago, guy looking for advice, says dog broke out of crate, then broke down a door to get into room with newborn baby, first day baby was home and crying. If wife had been there alone who knows what might have happened, but he grabs dog, dog redirects and bites him badly, but he has it and drags it from the room. This was a large, powerful breed with the genetics to be aggressive. He REFUSES to immediately take dog to place of safety for the baby and insists it stays in the house until he can board it. You know - the house it had battered a door down to get to the baby, after it broke out of a crate. So, after suggesting a trip to the vet was making him hostile, I said at least have keep many shut - unbroken - doors between them as you can, and put a soft muzzle on the dog - you don't have one then make one with whatever you have to hand, so it can't open it's mouth. It doesn't need to drink or eat until you get it to a place of safety (for the baby) the next day. Also bear in mind ramming the baby muzzled can easily kill the baby too. ITS A NEWBORN BABY. TAKE THE DOG TO THE 24 HOUR VET TO 'BOARD'
Apparently, the forum agreed muzzling the dog at all would be 'cruel' To the dog. And it would get used to the baby in time - just a little sniff when it had calmed down. Jesus! I would suspect a brain tumour from such an adverse reaction from a dog and I was half 'this is a prank' to ' I need to contact child services in whatever country the guy lives in (I didn't know)).
Hmm... I wonder how they "played" with this dog when it grew up. Dogs learn to love the sound of squeaks. As they bite down and a noise occurs, the pleasure center of their brain lights up. They keep squeaking to experience that feeling again and again. “squeaking” sounds of injured or frightened prey. How we play with our dogs and how it can trigger them, can be essential for how they act in every day life.
@@vikingdogmanship True. I would agree with your analysis of brain function and learning, however this dog still demonstrates a totally abnormal reaction. A high drive dog for sure - but less powerful than the average male Rottweiler, who may also be very high drive, yet few of whom break out of crates and through doors if they hear a squeak.
This was before the days of MRI to look for brain tumours. What happened to the dog or child, who knows - though I did write my veterinary thesis on dog bite fatalities, where human error was responsible 99% of the time, as it would have been here had the worst happened. Dogs have been PTS for a whole lot less than this dog, and putting egos aside as in 'I can fix this dog' would you want a dog like this walked around your neighbourhood as you push your baby in a pram? I wouldn't.
Some people are stupid and see dogs as important as a human not an animal..hope nothing bad happened to that poor baby

Every dog is different, bottom line, don’t think just because you have the best dog in the world can cause severe damage, my favorite dog in the world went ballistic after crying, he was only confused. Very good information, hopefully people listen.
I am relieved to watch this and hope many others do also. I am a grandmother and cringe when so many new parents have the dog all over the new infant.
Another awesome vid mate. We have a 2yr old whippet that is really starting to respond to the training we have learnt through watching ( and listening !!) to your wise words. Unfortunately a year ago while lead walking on a trail with my wife he was mauled by an out of control Rottweiler , off its lead.....it took 30 seconds. Major surgery, four months of rehab in a crate, numerous hefty vet bills and lingering PTSD ( for him and my wife ) have left them both very wary of other dogs. He has come a long way and is still the fun loving athletic affectionate character he always was but is now a little unpredictable around other dogs and sticks to us like velcro! So watching this edition was interesting as he just the other day met his first baby. Thankfully it seems we did the right things and kept a distance between them. The point I guess is that it took a major incident for us to really understand not to take your dogs behaviour for granted. Before this we would of said "nah he's great with kids" and maybe the Rotty's owner was thinking "ahh he's fine off the lead". They are dogs and they deserve our respect. Even if our dog had his ears right back and the charmometre on full now we would never leave him, or any other dog, alone with young kids. In this video you see the dog constantly looking up at his "Dad" like what do I do now? Our dog is at that stage now ( mostly ) and it is very rewarding for both of us. I heard a quote on Instagram ...They are a part of our world...but WE ARE their world. So True.

My mom always rescued large breed dogs and horses. I rescued large breed dogs. I had some wonderful dogs that were very protective. I never put my baby on the floor. Was it because I feared them hurting my baby, of course not. They could trip or fall, they could smother. They could touch with their paws and hurt my baby. Through no fault of their own, they could hurt my baby. It protected my baby and my dogs. I don’t understand why people keep buying dogs for their sheer presence. Buy a gun, learn self defense, grow up. I have rescued all of my dogs. There was no backstory. I didn’t know who they were and more importantly, they didn’t know who I was. I only know basic training techniques. Sit, stay, down. But you better bet, they did exactly what I told them and they ran around with a tongue hanging out, happy to know us. I never gave them a moment to fail. I probably would not adopt these new breeds. Never heard of them. Very sad that so many people want to be badass and adopt or purchase dogs that look really cool but they have really bad attitudes. Through breeding or poor parenting. I have to say though some of the smaller breeds are complete ass’s. They will bite you faster. Poor parenting also.

given time and comfort level.... the dog will be around the child more and more. always go slow and no unsupervised engagements!

My niece has a dog which knocks her baby over with its shoulder and then stands over the baby with its mouth hanging open. She says its playing with the baby, even when the baby is screaming from this event. When I tell her that the dog is dominating, she tells me to leave and the dog does no wrong.

I understand completely about having the baby at a higher level than the dog. Before we got our new dog our baby would be in tummy time a lot on the floor. Now, I’m not sure what to do. It’s important for the baby to get plenty of tummy time and learn to crawl, but that contradicts having the dog and the baby on the same level.
Is there a way you could do tummy time in a room apart from the dog? With a closed door between, or have the dog crated/kenneled up when tummy time is happening? I plan on doing tummy time in the baby room I have prepared where I don’t allow any of my pets.
Thank you!! My mother in law stuck my newborn in her dogs face! ("To smell her") I immediately sensed the dogs nervousness. Took my child back before disaster struck. Frustrating!

Oh the other hand my sister's won't let their babies in the sMe room with my dog. But their dogs can walk all around the baby, lick the baby, etc. So that's not very fair and is also frustrating

Very good video! What about with 2 dogs? They will each be at a different house when I deliver, so I worry about introducing both, most likely at separate times but with one already having met the baby when the other one gets home.
I do this when introducing dogs to new pets that are prey items. I never correct the dog. It is allowed to be curious and "meet" the animal and the dog learns quick that rabbit, chicken, whatever is important to me and he/she needs to respect it. Our dogs do fine with bunnies, chickens and their chicks, ducks, etc. Great video!

I just had a baby and I was wondering how I should introduce them . I did let the dog sniff the baby when coming back from hospital but generally speaking I avoid them interacting with each other . I want my dog to be neutral to the baby

Hi. We have a cat, who is also a rescue and a very busy household. We’ve only had our puppy for around 2 months. But she is very big and when she jumps up she comes up to belly level. Her claws are also very sharp. Have you got any videos on how to stop jumping when there are lots of distractions?

Thank you for this. We’ve got a very large puppy who’s a rescue. She, jumps on us. A bit worryingly she jumps on a family friend who’s pregnant. Our puppy is very big. How do we train her out of this? So that when our friend comes round once she has her baby the dog doesn’t jump on her?
This is a tough topic... So many cute pics snd vids everywhere of babies and toddlers and little kids in all sorts of close interactions with large dogs. So media/messaging is sort of like "a good dog should love kids and is safe with kids and will know how to play w kids"... but when its the first baby/kid full time in same home where dog lives, it may be different... but hard to know when or what might trigger a poor response.... I know this is a longwinded question, sorry, Robert but:
If following your (very sensible) method, what are signs to look for, and after what period of time, to know that a dog is fully safe with the kid in terms of taking a subordinate role? Danger signs are easier - growling, shying away, etc... But is it worth, after a time, creating some test situations to gauge the dog's intentions and relations with a toddler? Thank you.
My dog is anxious and mean too strangers I’ve watched this video and don’t know what too do it’s not really my dog but my parents and I cannot afford too move out
My dog has never had an interest in my child, which is totally fine. He has been jealous since mommy has a new favorite in his mind, despite dedicated mommy time. Now that my child is a toddler they are very interested in the dog and the dog it’s not having it. He moves away and looks to us to intervene if he doesn’t like what is being done, which I am grateful for. He always has a way to escape the area so no forced interactions take place but he wants to be with us at all times. the toddler makes that impossible because despite the thousand repeated times of do not touch the dog, do not get in his face, do not grab him, do not throw things at him… my little bugger still wants to play with the dog because he sees us interacting and loving on the dog. We are being diligent to avoid any issues and we know we can’t force them to be friends… Any words of wisdom?
You need to rehome your dog before something bad happens.
Supervision 24/7 is the key. My son had a phase like that, each time he wouldn't listen: time out. Trust me he stopped soon enough
I have an 8 year old German shepherd and just brought home a new baby. My dog barks and whines quite a bit. He’s pretty well trained but does not listen as well when he is stressed. Any advice?

A dog may be able to smell 100s of feet away but it PREFERS to smell directly. Like all dog trainers this guy should be listened to as one of many idea, not as fact/law
Out of curiosity, if the dog can smell the baby or anything else, why do they still get so close to try to smell it? One of my two dogs gets centimeters from the other dogs rear end to get a sniff.

May I ask why the dog must be completely away from the baby and punished if it goes near? At this point, just rehome the dog temporarily if it can't be near it. Wouldn't that teach the dog "oh being near the baby means bad things happen, so I am gonna growl at it so I don't get in trouble?"
Conditioning the dog to be neutral towards the baby. Dogs can play bite and that could be dangerous. Simple logic. Makes everyone safe and happy. Dog and baby!

Dogs should also be able to live outdoors. Dogs that are worked, fed nicely and feel satisfaction in their emotions, are completely fine in the natural air, sun and moonlight, or creating balance of outdoor and indoor. Why should people be pressured to have Dogs indoors. They are quite fine, as long as they are with you in the hunt.

Isn't this teaching the dog we as human's don't trust them around our baby? I can recall that type of trust be done by dogs to humans with their puppies. I don't understand. Wouldn't it be better to correct the dog being anything but gentle with the baby? You give it a chance to make a mistake and a chance to build the connection.
The baby is important,not the dog? To much neurotic rewarding and coddleing of the dog? The real baby should be in a safe place , to to start the introduction of the new surrogate pack member!! To much attention of the dogs wishes!! To much correct instructions or directions to really address hear?
HI I do Appreciate your Talk ,but I would just like to add whenI came home with my 4 day old son I put the baby on the lawn with 6 GSDs let them smell .All went well they had a 10 year bond..I have done the same with my Grandchildren ..Just my penny's worth...
Not what I would recommend. If it went wrong it would be catastrophic. But glad it worked out for you.
How do you manage to put a malinois into an open cage 😂 it's okay if he's disciplined but malinois are malinois..
Just get Bully type breeds, they LOVE taking care of babies.
there's no breed of dog that LOVES to take care of babies... caution with all dogs, if you love dogs that is!
